Insert query in SQL Server In SQL Server (Transact-SQL), the INSERT statement is used to insert a data into the table. It can be a single record or multiple records into a table in SQL Server. The INSERT INTO SELECT statement copies data from one table and inserts it into an existing table. Syntax 1: INSERT INTO table (column1, column2,...) VALUES (expression1, expression2,...) Syntax explanation: table_name: The table_name is specifying the name of the table that we wish to create name. column: One or more columns in which we need to insert data. column_list must be enclosed in parentheses ( ) and delimited by commas(, ).
expression: An expression is a constant, a variable, or an expression. The expression cannot contain an EXECUTE statement. Here we insert the coloums (customerid, city) in the table dbo.customers using the insert query. (1, New York ) over here 1 specifies the customerid, whereas New York specifies the city. Here the output is successfully displayed, with the message showing (1 row(s) affected).
In order to view the created coloums (customerid, city), we can check it here in the object explorer dbo.customers2 tables. On executing the below query, we are able to see the data inserted into the table. select * from dbo.customers Table Name dbo.customers CustomerID City Name 1 New York Syntax 2: In case, if we want to update multiple data at a shot. We can change the syntax as below: INSERT INTO table (column1, column2,... ) VALUES (expression1, expression2,... ), (expression1, expression2,... ),... ;
Sample Code: insert into dbo.customers(customerid,city) values (2, 'washington'), (3, 'Los Angeles'), (4, 'Chicago'), (5, 'Houston') Code Explanation: 1 st Row: (2, washington ) specifies the first row in the table. Here 2 is indicating the customerid and washington indicates the city.
2 nd Row: (3, Los Angeles ) specifies the second row in the table. Here 3 specifies the customerid and Los Angeles represents the city. 3 rd Row: (4, Chicago ) specifies the third row in the table. Here 4 is specifies the customerid and Chicago represents the city. 4 th Row: (5, Houston ) specifies the third row in the table. Here 4 is specifies the customerid and Houston represents the city. Here dbo.customers indicates the table name with its column names as customerid and city.
Here (2, 'washington'), (3, 'Los Angeles'), (4, 'Chicago'), (5, 'Houston') specifies the 4 different data that has been separated by commas (, ) indicates the values for the columns customerid and city. Here dbo.customers in the object explorer,specifies the table with columns customerid and city. Here the output is successfully displayed, with the message showing (4 row(s) affected). On executing the below query, we are able to see the data inserted into the table. select * from dbo.customers Table Name dbo.customers CustomerID City Name 1 New York 2 washington 3 Los Angeles 4 Chicago 5 Houston
Syntax 3: In its simplest form, the syntax for the SQL Server INSERT statement can be inserted with multiple records using a subselect option. INSERT INTO table (column1, column2,...) SELECT expression1, expression2,... FROM source_table [WHERE conditions]; Parameters or Arguments: Table: In SQL Server, table is used to insert the records into a table. column1, column2: Columns in the table holds the data with its values.
expression1, expression2: The values to assign to the columns in the table. So column1 would be assigned the value of expression1, column2 would be assigned the value of expression2, and so on. source_table: The source table when inserting data from another table. WHERE conditions: The WHERE condition is optional. The conditions that must be met for the records to be inserted. Sample code: insert into dbo.customers1 (customerid,city) select customerid,city from dbo.customers Code Explanation:
Here dbo.customers1 specifies the destination table, which we need to insert the data in database. Here (customerid, city) specifies the Customers table with Columns of the destination table. Here (customerid, city) specifies the columns of the source table from which we need to move the data. dbo.customers1 specifies source table from which the data needs to be moved. On executing the below query, we are able to see the data inserted into the new table.
select * from Customers1 Table Name Customers1 CustomerID City Name 1 New York 2 washington 3 Los Angeles 4 Chicago 5 Houston Sample Output:
Here Select Query is executed in Sql server management studio. Here the output is successfully displayed, with the message showing (5 row(s) affected). Here in this output dbo.customers specifies the source table in object explorer. Here in this output dbo.customers1 specifies the Destination table in object explorer.
