2 QUESTION 1: (25 MARKS) ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS (a) Outline the main benefits of the 3-tier architectural style. What do you understand by the term Open Source? How does Open Source Software differ from Proprietary Software? What character do all variable names begin with in PHP? What characters may appear next? What other characters can be used in a variable s name? (3 marks) (d) What are the differences between GET and POST methods in form submission? 3 QUESTION 2: (25 MARKS) (a) Describe the three different kinds of arrays you can create in PHP. Provide suitable code extracts to support your answer. (6 marks) According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the three largest American cities (by population) in 2010 were as follows: New York, NY (8,008,278 people) Los Angeles, CA (3,694,820) Chicago, IL (2,896,016) Define an array (or arrays) that hold this information about locations and population. Print a table of locations and population information that includes the total population in all three cities. (5 marks) Consider the following PHP code: for ($i=1; $i<=5; $i++) { for ($j=1; $j<=$i; $j++) { echo '+'; } echo '<br/>'; } Output: The above code fragment uses a for loop construct to print out above output. 4 (d) Write a function that returns the result of a basic arithmetic operation like addition, subtraction, multiplication and division based on two supplied operands passed as arguments. The function should accept two mandatory arguments, i.e. the first and second operands and a third optional argument for the operator (default operator value is addition). (5 marks) (e) Consider the following PHP code extract. What will be the output after running this code? 5 QUESTION 3: (25 MARKS) (a) What is a session? How can we store a variable into a session? How can we destroy a particular session or all active sessions? Write appropriate PHP codes that allows you to create a web page that uses a cookie to keep track of how many times a user has viewed the page. The first time a particular user looks at the page, it should print something like "Number of views: 1." The second time the user looks at the page, it should print "Number of views: 2," and so on. (d) Write a PHP program that does basic arithmetic. Display a form with text box inputs for two operands and a <select> menu to choose an operation, i.e. addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. Validate the inputs to make sure that they are numeric and appropriate for the chosen operation. The processing function should display the operands, operator, and the result. For example, if the operands are 4 and 2 and the operation is multiplication, the processing function should display "4 * 2 = 8". Your program should include the html coding for the form layout along with the PHP coding that process the form. (14 marks) Page 5 of 6

6 QUESTION 4: (25 MARKS) (a) List two PHP CMS (Content Management System) and outline the advantages of using a CMS to develop a website. (3 marks) Outline the four functions that can be used to retrieve data in the result set of a MySQL Database using PHP (Note: MySQLi extension to be used) What are the advantages of using stored procedures, triggers and indexes in a database? (3 x 2 marks) (d) What function is used to send in PHP? What are the function s arguments? What does the server need in order to send ? (e) Write appropriate PHP codes that dynamically populates a dropdown list on page load with values retrieved from Database db_university from table tbl_user. The display text of the dropdown list should come from the field user_login while the value text from user_id. Clearly state any assumptions you make for the database connection.
