Executive summary This study provides an overview of Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (OBIEE) and Oracle Hyperion Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) product capabilities for sharing data resources on the IBM zenterprise System with the IBM zenterprise BladeCenter Extension (zbx). The combination of the zbx hosting POWER blades running OBIEE and Hyperion EPM applications on AIX and the Oracle Database running on Linux on the zenterprise central processing complex proved to be a very viable and compelling alternative to a distributed system configuration. Red Hat Enterprise Linux was running on the zenterprise server and IBM AIX on the zbx. The study demonstrated the viability of this configuration. All components have been proven to work as an integrated solution, using the Oracle Essbase mechanism for data sharing, along with simple function embedding of the Oracle Business Information suite in the Hyperion framework. One of the advantages this solution provides is that customers can continue to leverage their existing investment in IBM zenterprise Systems, utilizing existing hardware to host and integrate business intelligence products on the same platform, resulting in protected resilience, performance, security and stability. There are many configurations which can be demonstrated over and above the simple configurations outlined in this document. It is clear that data integration and sharing in a diverse environment will provide major benefits with regard to information reporting and exploration, without the need to replicate and reproduce data in multiple locations and across multiple servers. Introduction This document describes a reference architecture for an Oracle OBIEE and Hyperion EPM installation on IBM s zbx hosted blades running AIX, with Oracle Database on Linux on the IBM zenterprise server. The installation for the hardware and software used for this study was conducted by the IBM Oracle International Competency Center at the Oracle s Redwood Shores California location. This architectural document has been produced as a result of the collaborative effort of both IBM and Oracle teams. We would like to thank and acknowledge Oracle for their participation in providing hardware and networking resources. The target audience of this document are architects in an IT or business organization evaluating these Oracle solutions. This study will help them evaluate and understand the benefits of deploying these Oracle solutions on the IBM zenteprise System. Business challenge and business value Business challenge This paper documents a reference architecture based on the IBM zenterprise platform that can be used along with Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition and Oracle Hyperion Enterprise Performance Management to deliver up-to-date operational intelligence to the front lines of a business. It does this 1

through data sharing in an efficient, secure, and cost effective manner without disrupting business operations or creating security exposures. This guide demonstrates how to provide a solution for implementing Hyperion EPM, and Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition on a two-blade AIX guest environment, and share a common Oracle Database, in this case Oracle Database 11g Release 2, in a Linux guest environment hosted on an IBM zenterprise System. This solution has the advantage of sharing hardware resources, and the possibility to share data through a single database instance. Business value The business value of the above configuration can be summarized as follows: Improved IT efficiency with the IBM zenterprise BladeCenter Extension by bringing Hyperion EPM and OBIEE applications closer to the data and transaction processing systems they rely on. Flexible and economic use of the IBM zbx blade environment. The zbx may host multiple virtual AIX guest environments on a single hardware blade. Single installation of the Oracle Database 11g Release 2 on IBM zenterprise hardware. Single guest environment running Red Hat Enterprise Linux Release 6.3. Easy installation and maintenance of the database environment. Easy maintenance and available Linux skills. Ability to share Hyperion EPM and OBIEE data though the single database installation (two instances) on the same hardware gaining performance advantage. Optimize Oracle workload deployments on best-fit technologies and architectures providing for integration and management with the simplicity of a single system. Built-in function to extend mainframe governance and qualities of service to special purpose workload optimizers and general-purpose application serving resources. End-to-end platform integration and resource optimization from a single point of control. Connectivity through a high speed, private network that helps minimize security vulnerabilities and network latency. Investment protection, reduction of complexity, improved resiliency and lower cost of ownership, while retaining the freedom to place and optimize each workload on the computing resource where it fits best. Requirements Functional requirements The functional requirements of the configuration are that the user must be able to login to either Hyperion EPM or OBIEE and have the ability to share data between the two environments using a common mechanism. Hyperion EPM and OBIEE provide Windows based PC client tools for connection to the AIX environments. These should have the ability to connect to either without the need for the user to be concerned with the location of the relative databases. 2

Hyperion EPM and OBIEE are separate products, but are able to share data in a number of ways. One way is a hosted OBIEE session within Hyperion EPM and another is the use of ESSBASE to create data cubes. Although data can be shared between the two products using ESSBASE cubes, the cubes must first be refreshed either manually, or on a scheduled basis from the source database before being used by the target application. Component model Figure 1 below outlines the hardware and OS component model. Database Tier Application Tier Client Tier Oracle Business Intelligence (OBIEE) Oracle Linux on Database System z Server on Linux on System z Oracle Database Server PeopleSoft 11g R2z Batch Server on Linux on System z AIX OBIEE Partition Hyperion Partition Hyperion EPM IBM zenterprise zec12 IBM zenterprise BladeCenter Extension (zbx) Figure 1. Hardware and OS component diagram The model is defined as follows: Client tier The Hyperion EPM and OBIEE client products are supported on either Windows XP+ or Linux platforms. The Hyperion EPM client consisted of: Essbase Administration, Essbase Client, Essbase Studio. Products to support the creation of Essbase cube data. 3

The OBIEE client consisted of: Administration, Catalog Manager. Access to the Hyperion EPM and OBIEE workspace is by Internet Explorer or Firefox browser using the Oracle WebLogic Server application server running on the zbx. Application tier The zbx was configured with single blade which was partitioned and hosted two environments. Both partitions used AIX 7.1 TL2. The zbx blade had 1 CPU with 16 GB of memory and used 45 GB of disk storage, plus 50 GB of storage from the SAN which was provisioned by an IBM DS8100 storage system. Hyperion EPM and OBIEE are each installed in their own AIX guest partition. Each hosts an instance of the Oracle WebLogic Application Server. Oracle WebLogic Server is installed as part of the Hyperion EPM and OBIEE installation process through the install wizard. Database tier: An IBM zenterprise EC12 running a single Red Hat Linux (RHEL) guest partition was used as the database server. This server ran RHEL 6.3 and had 2 CPUs with 8 GB of memory and used 64 GB disk storage, plus 50 GB of storage from the SAN again from the DS8100 storage system. This tier hosted a single installation of the Oracle Database 11g Release 2 ( ), with two database instances one for Hyperion EPM and one for OBIEE. Operational model This section will cover some of the operational options available with this configuration. Stand alone operation Both OBIEE and Hyperion EPM can be used in a segregated environment, although sharing the same common database platform. Each Oracle Database instance is separate, but shares physical resources. Data is not shared in this configuration, but access to both products can be established from a single client using URL s to the respective product homepage. Figure 2 outlines the stand alone operational model. 4

Figure 2. Stand alone operational diagram In this operational model there is no data sharing between Hyperion EPM or OBIEE. Client and database resources are shared. The database instances are hosted by the Oracle Database 11g Release 2 installation, but are not integrated. OBIEE workspace integration to Hyperion EPM It is possible to embed the OBIEE workspace within Hyperion EPM. This is not considered true integration other than it allows the user to run the Hyperion EPM client URL, and be able to call the OBIEE workspace from within the Hyperion EPM workspace framework. Figure 3 shows the OBIEE workspace integration to Hyperion EPM. Figure 3. OBIEE workspace integration to Hyperion EPM The configuration is similar to the first configuration, in that although the OBIEE workspace can be accessed from within the Hyperion EPM workspace, both products are still using their own dedicated WebLogic Server installation on the zbx blade. They also continue to use two separate instances of the database. 5

Sharing data using Essbase It is possible to share data between OBIEE and Hyperion EPM using Essbase cubes. This can be achieved by creating an Essbase cube in Hyperion EPM, and setting the datasource to an OBIEE database which in turn could have been sourced from an external product. Essbase is Oracle s tool for generating OLAP database cubes for use with both Hyperion EPM and OBIEE. It can be obtained as a stand alone product, but in this case, it is bundled with Hyperion EPM and installed as an option of the Hyperion EPM installation (or the BI Foundation Installer) process. Figure 4 shows an overview of Essbase when used for generation of cube databases. Figure 4. Essbase positioning Using the Essbase Client Studio it is possible to define the data source using industry standard interfaces. Then use rules to generate a three dimensional view of the source data. This can then be used by OLAP compatible reporting tools to import the generated cube data and produce drill down reports and views. Essbase is also able to generate OLAP cubes from any valid data source. In the shared data configuration using Essbase, the Essbase cube must be refreshed from the source database, in this case the sample orders database supplied with OBIEE. This refreshing of data can be performed manually or on a scheduled basis. Figure 5 shows the model for generating Essbase cubes. 6

Please substitute your own domain and machine names. Hyperion EPM and Oracle BIEE also provide MS Windows installation packages which you will use later in this document. The above screen capture shows the location of the installed Essbase applications accessed via the MS Windows program manager. 10

Note: there may be other packages installed dependent upon the selection options and platform. Hyperion EPM Navigate the sample data Sample data is included with the Hyperion EPM installation by default but is hidden. Use the following steps to view the sample database. Login to EPM using the main EPM URL, ( ). Launch the application, and minimize this browser window. Note: Do not close this window as this will close the session. 11

Enter the password selected during the install process, and click log on. 12

Note: It is possible that the drop down menus will not function correctly. This is a known issue and can be solved by taking the following steps: In the browser Tools > Internet options dialog box. Select Security. Select each of the security domains, and set the Allow script-initiated windows without size or position constraint to Enable Restart the browser. Click on Explore Deselect the hidden item Flag. Click Ok, and close. 13

You are now able to view the sample data. Hyperion EPM host OBIEE in the EPM workspace It is possible to run the OBIEE workspace from within the Hyperion EPM workspace. In a new browser session, login to the OBIEE home page using the following url ( Replace the server name and domain with yours. 14

The user login and password are the ones you supplied during the installation. Navigate to the web page you want to import into EPM. 15

In this example, the URL is: In the EPM browser session, previously opened using URL: Navigate to the Explorer, and create a folder called OBIEE. Open the folder, File > New menu option, select New workspace. Select a blank workspace and save. 16

Add the OBIEE source webpage to the folder parameters. 17

The resulting OBIEE embedded can then be called at any time during the Hyperion EPM session. 18

Note: It is possible that the following dialog box will be displayed when embedding the OBIEE workspace in Hyperion EPM. This error will prevent the OBIEE page from being displayed in the EPM workspace. This is a known issue which can be solved by taking the following steps. You may encounter this error message. This can be overcome by making the following changes to your OBIEE server configuration (in this case this is the DSCVG336 system). First locate the instanceconfig.xml file at the location: [OBIEE_HOME]\instances\instance1\config\OracleBIPresentationServicesComponent\coreapplication_ob ips1\ 19

Update the instanceconfig.xml file to add the highlighted entry within the "security" tag (possible values are 'allow', 'prohibit' and 'samedomainonly'): <Security> <InIFrameRenderingMode>allow</InIFrameRenderingMode> <!--This Configuration setting is managed by Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Manager--> <ClientSessionExpireMinutes>210</ClientSessionExpireMinutes> </Security> Next edit the 'web.xml' file at the following location: [OBIEE_HOME]\oracleBI1\bifoundation\web\app\WEB-INF\ Add the following highlighted entry to the file. The syntax is the opposite of what the syntax for instanceconfig.xml is, since the 'never' means to never block the rendering within IFrame (you can choose 'never' to always allow rendering in the IFrame, or 'differentdomain' to only allow rendering if it is in the same domain). <servlet-mapping> <servlet-name>sawbridge</servlet-name> <url-pattern>/saw.dll/*</url-pattern> </servlet-mapping> <servlet-mapping> <servlet-name>relatedcontent</servlet-name> <url-pattern>/relatedcontent</url-pattern> </servlet-mapping> <context-param> <param-name>oracle.adf.view.rich.security.frame_busting</param-name> <param-value>never</param-value> </context-param> <login-config> <auth-method>client-cert</auth-method> </login-config> 20

Now that you've completed both steps, restart the OBIEE System Components using opmnctl (Stop opmnctl and Start opmnctl). If you need to find this, you'll find it in your start menu on the server under the 'Oracle Business Intelligence' folder, called 'Stop BI Services' and 'Start BI Services' respectively. OBIEE and Hyperion EPM data integration This section will explain the sharing of a common database for analysis in OBIEE and Hyperion EPM using Essbase as the method of sharing data through the use of an Essbase data cube. The steps outlined in this section are as follows: 1. Install the Essbase client. 2. Adding a valid Essbase user through the admin console. 3. Validate the sample Sales database is available in Oracle BIEE. 4. Log into Essbase using the Essbase Studio Windows client. 5. Generate the Essbase data cube. 6. Log into EPM and create a connection to the Essbase cube. 7. Display data in EPM. Install the Essbase client Essbase client does not run on AIX, so must be installed on a Windows platform. In the installation directory on the AIX server, in this case /backup, there is a directory called EssbaseClient. Navigate to this directory, and copy the EssbaseClient.exe file to your Windows PC. Double click the.exe file to start the install. 21

This will create the following program entries. Starting the EAS Admin Console The admin console can be started from the Windows menu option through Program Files. If it is not possible to start the Essbase Admin Console through Windows, then use the following web browser URL: Login using EPM_admin, password Welcome1. Adding an additional user By default, the user security will be set to use the EPM Security Mode. This means that Essbase user security is controlled from within EPM shared services via the shared services console. 22

You need to add an additional profile, epm_user to shared services security, give it administration authority. Navigate to shared services console from the EPM workspace. Login to shared services using EPM_admin, password is the one you supplied when installing EPM. Create the user. 23

This new user will now be visible in Essbase security, but will be browser enabled only. 24

Validate the OBIEE Orders sample app. You can connect directly to OBIEE through the web browser using url: In this case, we will log into OBIEE as a hosted workspace in Hyperion EPM. Log into EPM using the following url: Enter the user name as EPM_user, password is Welcome1. We will use the application configuration previously defined in the Hyperion EPM configuration to connect to the OBIEE workspace. From the menus, navigate as follows: 25

Select BI Analysis menu option. 26

Select the Sales Lite DB. 27

This will display the passenger counts for Sales Lite DB airport grouped by airline. You have now validated that Hyperion EPM is able to host an OBIEE workspace, and that OBIEE services are active. Build an Essbase cube from OBIEE This section will outline how to build an Essabase data cube from the orders database supplied with Oracle BIEE. On the windows system, select the Essbase Studio Console. 28

Login using the following values: Server: dscvg337.us.oracle.com (Your Oracle BIEE server). User: Password: EPM_admin Welcome1 Select Log In to continue. 29

Work through the menus from the top down, and deploy the resulting cube to the EPM lpar. Select enough data to be able to present in Hyperion EPM Web Analysis. Note: There may be a connectivity issue with deploying the Essbase cube to the EPM Lpar. If this is the case then click the streaming mode before deploying the cube. This will use the existing JDBC connection to deploy the cube, it may be slightly slower but It should prove successful. In this example, the generated cube is named S_Data1, and resides in database S_Order2, on the OBIEE Lpar system. 30

Click Next (after testing the connection). 31

Select a number of tables. Click next. For now, skip the creation of the mini schema diagram. Click next. 32

Select all data elements, click Finish. The data source should now be created successfully. This will now be displayed in the data source navigator in the right pane of the main Essbase studio display. Continue to work through the remaining options in the main menu, setting the cube data element relationships and hierarchies. 33

34

You should see a display as above during the deployment of the cube, wait until it has completed successfully. Note: At this stage the cube deployment may fail with the following message: cannot put olap file object. Essbase error( ): network error. This may happen when the cube contains large amounts of data. To resolve this, add the following two settings in the essbase.cfg file on the EPM Lpar. NETDELAY 800 NETRETRYCOUNT 1000 Once the Essbase cube has been deployed, log into Hyperion EPM Web Analysis by opening a new web browser, and navigating to the following URL: Note: The EPM Web Analysis is installed as a service through the normal EPM installation routine, outlined earlier in this document. There may be an issue when signing in as epm_user and the system may appear to freeze. This is a known issue with EPM Web Analysis not compatible with Java 7. If this is the case then uninstall Java 7 in your windows system, and install the recommended version, Java 6.2. Login as follows: 35

Login with epm_user and password Welcome1. From the menu, select File > New > Database Connection. Select the cube previously deployed, then click to Finish, and save the database connection. You now have the database collection to build your report from. Select the database, and then click the designer icon from the top menu. In design mode, drag the spreadsheet icon from the menu and place on the desktop, then select a datasource to display. Depending upon how the dimensions of the Essbase cube were created, you should be able to import the Essbase cube data into EPM Web Analysis Studio. In here you will be able to manipulate the data into Hyperion EPM reports. Refer to the Oracle documents under the Reference section for details of how to create Essbase cubes from a number of different data sources, and how to set hierarchies and drill down analysis features. The following link also outlines the steps to create an Essbase cube in detail: n-907ed2.html 36

Summary This project has demonstrated a number of different ways to configure Oracle s Hyperion Enterprise Performance Management product and Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition product in the same shared hardware environment. In this scenario we used the IBM zenterprise BladeCenter Extension to host the Oracle WebLogic Server application servers, and we used the IBM zenterprise server to run the Oracle Database. An IBM DS8100 storage server was used to provide storage resources for this configuration. Using common components, we were able to demonstrate that the sharing of resources and data was easily and efficiently achieved using Oracle Essbase for data transfer via cube building. The benefits of deploying these Oracle solutions on an IBM zenterprise System is that the customer can continue to utilize and expand their investment in the zenterprise platform, with both Oracle products coresiding on the same platform, providing resilience, performance and availability, without the need for additional hardware components. 37
