4 ORACLE DATABASE 11g RELEASE 2 FUNCTIONALITY CERTIFIED BY SAP INTRODUCTION Oracle Database 11g Release 2 Enterprise Edition delivers industry leading performance, scalability, security and reliability on a choice of clustered or single-servers, running Windows, Linux, and UNIX. It provides comprehensive features to easily manage the most demanding transaction processing, business intelligence, and content management applications. Oracle Database 11g Release 2 Enterprise Edition comes with a wide range of options to extend the world s #1 database to help grow your business and meet your users performance, security and availability service level expectations. SAP has certified Oracle Database 11g Release 2 (please see SAP Note ) with the following details: Only SAP products based on SAP Kernel 6.40_EX2, 7.x and higher are certified with Oracle Database A general release of Oracle Database 11g Rel. 2 is not provided for earlier SAP releases (SAP R/3 3.1I up to and including SAP R/3 4.6C). Similar to Oracle Database Version 10.2, there is only a temporary 11.2 release in direct connection with an SAP upgrade project for these older SAP versions. The SAP release of Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) 11g Release 2 occurred at the same time as the general release of Oracle Database 11g Release 2 in the SAP environment. For information about Oracle RAC support, (see SAP Note ). It contains important details about the released RAC configurations. As of Oracle 11g Database version , SAP fully supports Oracle Automatic Storage Management Oracle (ASM) and its extended functionality to manage ALL data: Oracle Database files, Oracle Clusterware files and non-structured general purpose data such as Oracle and SAP kernel binaries, external files and text files. Oracle ASM simplifies, automates and reduces cost and overhead by providing a unified and integrated solution stack for all file management needs, eliminating the need for 3rd party volume managers, file systems and clusterware platforms. Oracle ASM has two major enhancements that are important for running SAP: Oracle Cluster Repository (OCR) and voting files can be stored on Oracle ASM. Oracle RDBMS Home can be stored on Oracle s new cluster file system ACFS. This makes Oracle ASM the preferred storage platform for SAP running on Oracle Real Application Clusters as well as for SAP systems running on a single instance Oracle Database (for more information about Oracle ASM, see the article on page 14). For details see SAP Note Oracle Database 11g Release 2 provides customers more benefits: saving disk space with lower hardware costs, more performance, higher security, better manageability, exceeding productivity and at least in an outstanding high availability/disaster recovery for SAP applications. The following provides a list of important features available for SAP customers today and many of them are unique to Oracle. OLTP Table Compression Oracle Database 11g introduced a new feature called OLTP Table Compression that allows data to be compressed during all types of data manipulation operations, including conventional DML such as INSERT and UPDATE. In addition, OLTP Table Compression reduces the associated compression overhead of write operations making it suitable for transactional or OLTP environments as well. OLTP Table Compression, therefore, extends the benefits of compression to all application workloads.

Oracle Database 11g Release 2 for SAP 5 DATABASE 11 g Oracle s OLTP Table Compression, part of Advanced Compression, uses a unique compression algorithm that eliminates duplicate values within a database block, even across multiple columns. Compressed blocks contain a structure called a symbol table that maintains compression meta data. When a block is compressed, duplicate values are eliminated by first adding a single copy of the duplicate value to the symbol table. When compared with competing compression algorithms that maintain a global database symbol table, Oracle s unique approach offers significant performance benefits by not introducing additional I/O when accessing compressed data. The benefits of OLTP Table Compression go beyond just on-disk storage savings. One significant advantage is Oracle s ability to read compressed blocks directly without having to first uncompress the block. Therefore, there is no measurable performance degradation for accessing compressed data. In fact, in many cases performance may improve due to the reduction in I/O since Oracle will have to access fewer blocks. Further, the buffer cache will become more efficient by storing more data without having to add memory. Since Oracle Database Rel , SAP has certified the use of Index compression to save disk space for indexes and reduce total database size on disk. Customer experiences show that even after a full database reorganization has taken place, an additional 20% of total disk space reduction for the whole database can be achieved using index compression. SecureFile Data Compression SecureFiles is a new feature in Oracle Database 11g that introduces a completely re-engineered large object (LOB) data type to dramatically improve performance, manageability, and ease of application development. SecureFiles data is compressed using industry standard compression algorithms. Compression not only results in significant savings in storage but also improved performance by reducing IO, buffer cache requirements, redo generation and encryption overhead. SecureFile compression provides significant storage and handles in-line and out-of-line LOB data which are getting more and more important in SAP applications and are widely used in SAP products such as SAP CRM, SAP XI, SAP NetWeaver Portal, and even in SAP ERP. Almost all non-cluster tables in SAP ERP use outoffline LOBs that are unique to the Oracle database. RMAN Backup Compression The continuous growth in enterprise databases creates an enormous challenge to database administrators. The storage requirements for maintaining database backups and the performance of the backup procedures are directly impacted by database size. Oracle Advanced Compression includes compression technology that can dramatically reduce the storage requirements for backup data. Due to RMAN s tight integration with Oracle Database, RMAN backup (widely used by SAP customers) data is compressed before it is written to disk or tape and doesn t need to be uncompressed before recovery providing an enormous reduction in storage costs. Data Pump Compression The ability to compress the meta data associated with a Data Pump job was first provided in Oracle Database 10g Release 2. In Oracle Database 11g, this compression capability has been extended so that table data can be compressed on export. Data Pump compression is an inline operation, so the reduced dump file size means a significant savings in disk space. Unlike operating system or file system compression utilities, Data Pump compression is fully inline on the import side as well, so there is no need to uncompress a dump file before importing it. The compressed dump file sets are automatically decompressed during import without any additional steps by the Database Administrator. Data Guard Network Compression Data Guard provides the management, monitoring, and automation software infrastructure to create, maintain, and monitor one or more standby databases to protect enterprise data from failures, disasters, errors, and data corruptions. Data Guard maintains synchronization of primary and standby databases using redo data (the information required to recover a transaction). As transactions occur in the primary database, redo data is generated and written to the local redo log files. Data Guard Redo Transport Services are used to transfer this redo data to the standby site(s).

6 DATABASE 11 g With Advanced Compression, redo data may be transmitted in a compressed format to reduce the network bandwidth in an efficient way. Redo transport compression is no longer limited to compressing redo data only when a redo gap is being resolved. When compression is enabled for a destination, all redo data sent to that destination is compressed. Deferred Segment Creation Beginning in Oracle Database 11g Release 2, when creating a table in a locally managed tablespace, table segment creation is deferred until the first row is inserted. In addition, creation of segments is deferred for any LOB columns of the table, any indexes created implicitly as part of table creation, and any indexes subsequently explicitly created on the table. The advantages of this space allocation method for customers running Oracle database underneath their SAP applications are the following: Empty database objects will not consume any disk space Very important for SAP environments as 60-70% of all tables, LOBs, indexes and partitions in a SAP installation are empty Makes database installation for SAP a lot faster because creation of empty tables, LOBs, and indexes are dramatically faster Oracle Data Dictionary Space queries run substantially faster Enhanced Add COLUMN Functionality Before Oracle Database 11g adding new columns with DEFAULT values and NOT NULL constraint required both an exclusive lock on the table and the default value to be stored in all existing records. Now in Oracle Database 11g, the database can optimize the resource usage and storage requirements for this operation, default values of columns are maintained in the data dictionary for columns specified as NOT NULL. Adding new columns with DEFAULT values and NOT NULL constraint no longer requires the default value to be stored in all existing records. This not only enables a schema modification in subseconds and independent of the existing data volume, it also consumes no space. Especially for large tables, updating table column results in reduced execution time and space saving. Because ADD column is very common within SAP BW applications and SAP upgrades, enhanced ADD Column Functionality leads to: Factor performance improvement for SAP BW during ADD column process Saving large amount of disk space Compared to Oracle Database 10g, the listed Oracle Database 11g features give the following results: Database (fully reorganized) SAP ECC 6.0 SAP BW 7.0 SAP CRM 7.0 RMAN Backup (for compressed database) Without Compression 4,782 GB 1,413 GB 950 GB With compression and other space optimizations 1,976 GB 543 GB 334 GB Space Savings 59% 62% 64% 2,817 GB 667 GB 76% Export Data Pump 973 GB 156 GB 84% SecureFile Performance SecureFiles offer the best solution for storing file content, such as images, audio, video, PDFs, and spreadsheets. Traditionally, relational data is stored in a database, while unstructured content both semi-structured and unstructured is stored as files in file systems. SecureFiles is a major paradigm shift in the choice of files storage. SecureFiles is specifically engineered to deliver high performance for file data comparable to that of traditional file systems, while retaining the advantages of the Oracle Database. SecureFiles offers the best database and file system architecture attributes for storing unstructured content. SAP customers benefit from SecureFiles because of: Significantly faster access times compared to LOBs in SAP environments Increased transaction throughput on SAP cluster tables especially with RAC Prerequisite for compression of SAP tables containing LOBs (e.g. cluster tables)

Oracle Database 11g Release 2 for SAP 7 Overall transaction throughput increases when LOB data is stored in SecureFiles (see figure beside). LOB data stored in SecureFiles delivers equal or better performance compared with LOB data stored in LONG or BasicFiles (LOB implementation prior to Oracle Database 11g). SecureFiles improve dramatically the scalability of SAP applications running against Oracle Database 11g RAC but also Oracle Database 11g Single Instance benefits substantially from SecureFiles. Therefore, a clear recommendation is given to migrate all existing LONG and Basicfile LOB data to Secure- Files. Performance Improvement Factor SAP VBDATA Throughput (Insert/Read/Delete) row size in KB LONGs (9.2,10.2) LOBs (10.2,11.2) Securefiles 11.2 Tablespace Encryption On many agendas, security is in the forefront and becoming much more important for customers. Oracle has a lot of features in the area of security. Especially for SAP customers, it is now very easy to encrypt sensitive data. Included within the Advanced Security Option (ASO) is the technology to encrypt all data in a tablespace. Prior to Oracle Database 11g, Oracle provided security features such as Column Encryption through Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) and Client Server (SAP Application Server) Network Encryption. Additional Encryption Advanced Security Option (ASO) within Oracle Database 11g includes RMAN Backup Encryption, so no one can read data from a (stolen) backup. In addition customers can easily encrypt export file with Oracle Data Pump unstructured LOB data with SecureFile Encryption. DG Secure Network Transport Data Guard provides a secure environment and prevents tampering with redo data as it is being transferred to the standby database. To enable secure transmission of redo data, set up every database in the Data Guard configuration to use a password file, and set the password for the SYS user identically on every system. BR*Tools Support for Oracle Database 11g As of version 7.20, BR*Tools support the new features provided by Oracle Database 11g Release 2 which makes it very easy to implement them even in existing systems (see SAP Note ). In particular, the following operations are possible: BRSPACE provides special options for online reorganization, which allow you to activate the new OLTP table compression To convert the old LOBs (data type LONG or LOB) to the new LOBs (data type SecureFiles), BRSPACE provides a new action lob2lob within the reorganization function tbreorg As of patch 3, BRSPACE 7.20 supports the management of the index compression for Oracle Database 10g as well as Oracle Database 11g (see SAP Note ) BRSPACE allows you to set the compression and encryption attributes at tablespace level when you create a new tablespace. Tables that are created in (or moved to) such a tablespace then implicitly adopt these attributes, except if they are set explicitly at table level BRSPACE is aware of columns which contain data that are compressed by SAP. It makes sure that the useless overhead of an additional compression is avoided More Security Database Vault Oracle Database Vault is also certified for use with SAP applications. With Oracle Database Vault, protective realms around SAP application database objects can be established to prevent privileged database users from accessing sensitive data and to enforce separation of duties among privileged database users.

8 The Oracle/SAP Development Team recently concluded comprehensive testing of SAP applications using Real Application Testing to measure the effects of Advanced Compression for OLTP and SecureFiles on DML operations for SAP ERP. The testing activity consisted of using Database Replay to capture a production workload from a Oracle Database Rel SAP database. This workload was then replayed multiple times against both compressed and noncompressed Oracle Database 11g Release 2 databases. The test results can be read in the newsletter as of page 12. Real Application Testing (RAT) Database Replay provides DBAs and system administrators with the ability to faithfully, accurately and realistically rerun actual production workloads, including online user and batch workloads, in test environments. By capturing the full database workload from production systems, including all concurrency, dependencies and timing, database Replay enables you to realistically test system changes by essentially recreating production workloads on the test system, something that a set of scripts can never duplicate. With database Replay, DBAs and system administrators can test: Database upgrades, patches, parameter, schema changes, etc. Configuration changes such as conversion from a single instance to Oracle RAC, Oracle ASM, etc. Storage, network, interconnect changes Operating system, hardware migrations, patches, upgrades, parameter changes statistics by running the SQL statements serially before and after the changes SQL Performance Analyzer (SPA) can predict and prevent SQL execution performance problems caused by environment changes. SQL Performance Analyzer provides a granular view of the impact of environment changes on SQL execution plans and statistics by running the SQL statements serially before and after the changes. Direct NFS With Oracle Database 11g Release 2, you can configure Oracle Database to access NAS devices directly using Oracle Direct NFS Client, rather than using the operating system kernel NFS client. Oracle Database will access files stored on the NFS server directly through the integrated Direct NFS Client eliminating the overhead imposed by the operating system kernel NFS. These files are also accessible via the operating system kernel NFS client thereby allowing seamless administration. SAP customers can benefit from Direct NFS in the following way: Improves throughput of NAS solutions such as NetApp Up to 50% more database throughput in NAS environments with multiple NICs Up to 20% CPU savings on database server Works for Single Instance and Real Application Clusters (RAC) Works for UNIX, Linux and Windows Platforms Highly Available Network Solution Faster, easier and more available than any OS or NAS based bonding or trunking solution Direct NFS with NAS may provide higher throughput than traditional, more complex SAN solutions Superior to any bonding solution faster and easier Better throughput than most SAN solutions

Oracle Database 11g Release 2 for SAP 9 DATABASE 11 g Online Patching A regular RDBMS patch is comprised of one or more object files and/or libraries. Installing a regular patch requires shutting down the RDBMS instance, relinking the Oracle binary, and restarting the instance; uninstalling a regular patch requires the same steps. With Oracle Database 11g, it is possible to install single or bundle patches completely online, without requiring the database instance to be shut down, and without requiring RAC or Data Guard configurations. With online patching, which is integrated with OPatch, each process associated with the instance checks for patched code at a safe execution point, and then copies the code into its process space. Snapshot Standby Easy conversion of a physical standby database to a reporting database A physical standby database can be opened read/write for reporting purposes, and then flashed back to a point in the past to be easily converted back to a physical standby database. At this point, Data Guard automatically synchronizes the standby database with the primary database. This allows the physical standby database to be utilized for read/write reporting activities for SAP applications e.g. NetWeaver BI. does not require patching an ORACLE_HOME that is already being used in production. However, you must ensure that you have sufficient free disk space to accommodate two Oracle home directories at the same time (for more information check SAP note ). SAP Bundle Patches (SBP) Oracle database patches for UNIX-platforms are now delivered in form of so-called SAP Bundle Patches (SBP) as of Oracle Database Rel SBPs are based on Oracle Patch Set Updates (PSUs) that are proactive cumulative patches containing recommended bug fixes and Critical Patch Updates (CPU) that are released on a regular and predictable schedule. A SAP Bundle Patch consists of Current Patch Set Update (PSU), SAP specific necessary Single-and Merge-Patches which are not contained in the PSU, current SAP specific Optimizer-Merge-Patch, README.html: installation manual for SBP, bugs_fixed.html: list of patches contained in SBP. SBPs are cumulative and the current one contain all previous patches and then nes patches in addition. In other words, customers always need to install only one, the most current, SBP using MOPatch. Out-of-place Upgrade Starting with the first patch set for Oracle Database 11g Release 2 ( ), Oracle Database patch sets are full installations of the Oracle Database software. In past releases, Oracle Database patch sets consisted of a set of files that replaced files in an existing Oracle home. Beginning with Oracle Database 11g Release 2, patch sets are full installations that replace existing installations. This is Oracle s recommended way to apply a patch set. You install the patch set into a new, separate Oracle home location. After you install the patch upgrade, you then migrate the Oracle Database from the older Oracle home. The patch set upgrade is now the same process to upgrade from one version to another. Oracle recommends that you perform an out-of-place patch set upgrade, because this patch set application option requires much less downtime, and is safer because it

A: The Oracle Exadata Database Machine combines both software and hardware in one unique box. All the database features and storage functionalities are integrated in a system rack (X2-2 and X2-8) and all the components and modules are designed to work together or in other words: Hardware and Software, Engineered to Work Together. The Database Machine is a pre-configured system ready for use on day one. It eliminates significant integration work, cost, and time from the database deployment process as well as the need to deploy a high-performance database system. Database machines are tested in the factory and delivered ready for use. Because all database machines are the same, their characteristics and operations are well known and understood by Oracle field engineers and support. Individual customers will not need to diagnose and resolve unique issues that only occur on their configuration. Performance tuning and stress testing performed at Oracle on an exact replica of the customer s configuration ensure better performance and higher quality. The powerful servers within the Exadata Database Machine (up to 64 cores and 2 TB RAM) allow customers to move multiple small databases to a single server for enhanced management and resource sharing. This can even be supported by a new feature called Oracle instance caging which can dedicate processors to specific instances (a solution that prevents one instance from hogging the processors). - Large databases can be spread over several RAC nodes. - Exadata is suitable for any kind of load, OLTP, OLAP or a combination of both. We often refer to the 3 legs of a stool: extreme performance, lower cost, and complete solution. The 3 legs are interconnected, for example, extreme performance leads to less hardware, thus less floor space, cooling, etc. which results in lower cost. Having a complete solution on day one means less setup and configuration time, thus lower cost and so on. Q: Is Oracle Exadata only intended for companies using SAP? A: Oracle and SAP agreed to certify Exadata and Oracle technologies (such as Oracle ASM and Oracle Linux). All companies using SAP are potential customers who can benefit of the Oracle Exadata Database Machine for SAP. Benefiting most from the Oracle Exadata Database Machine are definitely companies which provide database services based on the Oracle Database and database-based applications using the Oracle Database, such as SAP. It can be assumed that between 70 and 80 percent of all SAP customers also use Oracle database servers for non-sap purposes. This group of customers stands to benefit in particular from the Exadata Database Machine. Exadata can be considered as a consolidation platform for any kind of Oracle database, regardless of the application. If a large number of databases share the platform, this will dramatically reduce administration costs and improve economic viability.

14 ORACLE CLOUD FOR SAP Oracle Automatic Storage Management (ASM) and ASM Cluster File System (ACFS) available for SAP customers INTRODUCTION Oracle Real Application Clusters 10g Rel. 2 and Oracle Database 11g Rel. 2 for SAP has been implemented by many small, medium and large SAP customers on all available and certified platforms for SAP applications (HP-UX, AIX, Sun, Windows, and Linux). The underlying shared cluster file system, required by Oracle RAC, was used depending on the platform and the operating system (e.g. HP Service Guard Cluster File System for HP-UX, Sun QFS for Sun, Network Appliance NFS and OCFS for Linux and Windows). Oracle Cloud File System that compliments Oracle Automatic Storage Management for Oracle Databases is now certified by SAP. This certification has been done as of Oracle version for Oracle Single Instance and Oracle Real Application Clusters (Oracle RAC). The Oracle Cloud File System includes: Oracle Automatic Storage Management (ASM) Oracle Automatic Storage Management Cluster File System (ACFS) Oracle Automatic Storage Management Dynamic Volume Manager (ADVM) These three main parts of Oracle Cloud File System create an integrated foundation for database and general purpose files as well as an infrastructure for cluster and single node server configurations. The Oracle Grid Infrastructure simplifies and streamlines management of volumes, file systems and cluster configurations, therefore eliminating the need for multiple 3rd party software layers, complexity and cost. Complexity and cost can be reduced enormously for SAP customers using Oracle RAC by using SAPCTL (SAP Control) based on Oracle Database Rel Clusterware, making SAP services highly available and eliminating the need of 3rd party software. Starting with Oracle Database 11g ( ) Oracle Cloud File System is the preferred storage platform for SAP systems running on Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC), as well as SAP systems running on a single Oracle Database. SAP customers are now able to use Oracle Cloud File System to manage ALL data: Oracle Database files, Oracle Clusterware files and non-structured general purpose data such as Oracle and SAP kernel binaries, external files, and text files. Overview of Automatic Storage Management (ASM) Oracle ASM is a volume manager and a file system for Oracle database files that supports single-instance Oracle Database and Oracle Real Application Clusters configurations. Oracle ASM is Oracle s recommended storage management solution for SAP on Oracle RAC and Oracle single instance that provides an alternative to conventional volume managers, file systems, and raw devices. Oracle ASM lowers the Oracle database storage total cost of ownership and increases storage utilization while improving performance and availability over traditional file system and volume management solutions. Oracle ASM is easier to manage than conventional file systems, has the performance of raw volumes, and is tightly integrated with the Oracle Database forming the foundation of a storage grid for Oracle. Additionally, Oracle ASM eliminates the need for 3rd party volume managers and file systems for managing the Oracle database files. Oracle ASM uses disk groups to store data files; an Oracle ASM disk group is a collection of disks that Oracle ASM manages as a unit. Within a disk group, Oracle ASM exposes a file system interface for Oracle

Oracle Cloud for SAP 15 database files. The content of files that are stored in a disk group is evenly distributed to eliminate hot spots and to provide uniform performance across the disks. The performance is comparable to the performance of raw devices. You can add or remove disks from a disk group while a database continues to access files from the disk group. When you add or remove disks from a disk group, Oracle ASM automatically redistributes the file contents and eliminates the need for downtime when redistributing the content. Oracle ACFS can be accessed and managed using native operating system file system tools and standard application programming interfaces (APIs). Oracle ACFS can be configured and managed using Oracle Enterprise Management tools. Oracle ACFS can be accessed using industry standard Network Attached Storage (NAS) File Access Protocols: Network File System (NFS) and Common Internet File System (CIFS). The Oracle ASM volume manager functionality provides flexible server-based mirroring options. The Oracle ASM normal and high redundancy disk groups enable two-way and three-way mirroring respectively. Oracle ASM files can coexist with other storage management options such as raw disks and third-party file systems. This capability simplifies the integration of Oracle ASM into pre-existing environments. Overview of Oracle ASM Cluster File System (ACFS) Prior to Oracle Database 11g Release 2, Oracle ASM was a volume manager and a file system for Oracle database files only. Now, Oracle customers can benefit from a single integrated solution instead of acting as the systems integrator and dealing with the complexities of integrating different software layers from different vendors in house. Oracle ASM, Oracle ACFS, Oracle ADVM snapshot are tightly integrated with the Oracle Database, Oracle RAC, Clusterware and other Oracle technologies and presents a comprehensive and well tested solution for SAP customers running the Oracle Database. Oracle Automatic Storage Management Cluster File System is a multi-platform, scalable file system, and storage management technology that extends Oracle Automatic Storage Management functionality to support customer files maintained outside of the Oracle Database. Oracle ACFS is tightly coupled with Oracle Clusterware technology, participating directly in Clusterware cluster membership state transitions and in Oracle Clusterware resource-based high availability (HA) management. In addition, Oracle installation, configuration, verification, and management tools have been updated to support Oracle ACFS. Figure 1 An Oracle ACFS file system is a layer on Oracle ASM and is configured with Oracle ASM storage, as shown in Figure 1. Oracle ACFS leverages Oracle ASM functionality that enables: Oracle ACFS dynamic file system resizing Maximized performance through direct access to Oracle ASM disk group storage Balanced distribution of Oracle ACFS across Oracle ASM disk group storage for increased I/O parallelism Data reliability through Oracle ASM mirroring protection mechanisms

16 Oracle Automatic Storage Management Cluster File System (Oracle ACFS) is layered on Oracle ASM through the Oracle ADVM interface. With the addition of the Oracle ADVM, Oracle ASM becomes a complete storage solution of user data for both database and non-database file needs. Overview of Oracle ASM Dynamic Volume Manager (ADVM) Oracle ASM Dynamic Volume Manager (Oracle ADVM) provides volume management services and a standard disk device driver interface to clients. File systems and other disk-based applications send I/O requests to Oracle ADVM volume devices as they would to other storage devices on a vendor operating system. An Oracle ADVM volume device is constructed from an Oracle ASM dynamic volume. One or more Oracle ADVM volume devices may be configured within each Oracle ASM disk group. The Oracle ADVM Driver maps I/O requests against an Oracle ADVM volume device to blocks in a corresponding Oracle ASM dynamic volume and disk set located within an Oracle ASM disk group. An Oracle ADVM volume device exports Oracle ASM volume manager features and ensures that volume mirrors remain consistent in the face of abnormal system shutdowns, Oracle ASM instance failures, or system failures. Oracle ADVM extends Oracle ASM by providing a disk driver interface to Oracle ASM storage allocated as Oracle ASM volume files. You can use Oracle ADVM to create virtual disks that contain file systems. These file systems contained on Oracle ASM volumes are able to support files beyond Oracle database files, such as executable files, report files, trace files, alert logs, and other application data files. Because Oracle ADVM volumes are actually Oracle ASM files, they require the same administrative privileges as the Oracle ASM files. Moving SAP databases to Oracle Database 11g Release 2 ASM SAP customers can now move their databases to ASM, the preferred storage platform for SAP systems running on RAC and single instance. Customers can migrate their current file systems to ASM/ACFS/ADVM in a smooth way based on the best practices published on and SAP Note Based on these white papers the migration can be briefly described as follow: Oracle ASM Disk Groups configuration Oracle Grid Infrastructure installation Oracle Database 11g Release 2 and first patch set ( ) installation Configuration of Source and Target system Online database migration through RMAN using duplicate from active database in case the OS platform does not change or if the source and target system have the same ENDIAN Off line database migration thorough RMAN using transportable tablespaces or export/import or Triple O based on Oracle GoldenGate if the platform changes (can also be used for homogeneous migration) For more information about the migration process, check the white papers mentioned above

SAP on Oracle Solaris 23 SAP ON ORACLE SOLARIS The Oracle Solaris Operating System The Oracle Solaris Operating System supported on over 1000 x86 and SPARC platforms delivers the performance, stability and security our customers demand. With thousands of applications available on Solaris, one OS can span your entire enterprise: the Web tier, the data warehouse, and the most demanding technical applications. Moving to Solaris 10 is easy, whether you re upgrading from an older Solaris release or migrating from another OS. Oracle Sun and SAP have worked together since 1993 to provide a scalable, reliable, secure, flexible, and open computing infrastructure for customers around the globe. Over time, our joint efforts have paid off, helping Sun to consistently achieve many SAP Sales and Distribution standard application benchmark world records. Sun has 15 years of experience in scaling the OS to support throughput workloads. SAP leverages the scalability and performance of Solaris, whether on a 72-CPU SMP server, a 32-thread CoolThreads server, or a grid of x64 servers. With Solaris Containers, you can securely consolidate applications and increase the utilization of system resources by up to 80%. Solaris ZFS enables file systems to grow dynamically to virtually any size. All these features running on Sun servers create a powerful, efficient environment that can quickly scale and adapt to changes in demand or business processes. Increase Business Efficiency, Lower Costs Enterprises are under tremendous pressure to do more with less: roll out new business services faster, fit more servers into the same space, and comply with new regulations all while budgets are shrinking and headcount is frozen. Lowering TCO Server consolidation with Solaris results in substantial reductions in total cost of ownership (TCO). Such information is always more meaningful if it is specific to your installation, and Oracle has TCO tools that can help you calculate the cost of your current infrastructure as well as the TCO of a consolidated infrastructure. Such server consolidations range from replacing 9 servers to as many as 20 servers with a single server (see table for sample savings based on real-world configurations). A free onsite data center assessment is available. 2 IBM p595, 24 CPUs High-availability requirements 2 HP Superdome Itanium 2, SAPS, 2x EMC CLARiiON CX4 model 240, VxVM, VxFS 14 HP servers (different types, PA-RISC) 2 Sun M8000, 12 4 Core CPUs 2 Sun B6000 with 12 x64 Blades (4 4-core 32GB) and 4 CMT blades (1 T2 8-core 32GB) 2 Sun X4600, SAPS, 256 GB, 2x Sun StorageTek 7410, Solaris ZFS 2 Sun X4600, 2 Sun M % lower operating costs than current configuration; 35% lower investment than proposed IBM P6 solution 89% savings in energy and cooling 87% savings in hardware maintenance 100% savings Veritas software license ROI within 6 months 76% savings in energy and cooling, HW maintenance not considered, ROI within 2 years Sample TCO Savings with Sun Server Consolidations When TCO comparisons take into account costs for years 1 through 3 rather than year 1 only, Solaris wins over other options such as Linux that might appear low-cost but come with additional administration and licensing costs. The value-added features of Solaris coupled with its cross-hardware compatibility make its TCO very competitive indeed. When companies find themselves at an inflection point in SAP deployment, needing to squeeze the most value from existing SAP seats and licenses, server consolidation is an important way forward. In this context, it makes sense to consider Solaris for the following reasons:

24 Solaris platform compatibility means that it runs on everything from laptops to high-end servers. Deploy Solaris on low-cost systems to achieve highperformance and stability. Having one operating system run on various computing platforms significantly reduces administration cost. Virtualization is free Solaris Containers are the only virtualization option currently supported by both Oracle and SAP (Oracle supports running in Oracle VM and in Solaris Containers; SAP supports running in VM ware and in Solaris Containers). Examine case studies regarding Containers for further details about the enterprise benefits of free virtualization using Solaris Containers. Solaris is green Green IT offers sustainability, energy and cost savings, and compliance with emerging regulations. 360-degree support for running SAP Having a single source for support is also a compelling value proposition for enterprise data centers. If problems arise, calling Oracle Sun will solve the problem. Oracle Sun s role as an SAP Global Technology Partner, the Solaris Lab for SAP, and the Oracle Solution Center in Walldorf as well as SAPcertified migration consultants highlight Oracle s commitment to supporting SAP customers. Less stress Some advantages of Solaris are less easily quantified. In today s economy, businesses need a painless solution that solves problems and reduces stress. Solaris offers proven and unparalleled stability. Solaris TCO is low in part because it needs so little administration and administering Solaris (for example patch management) is much easier than administering Linux. It just works. Flexibility and agility Cutting-edge technology features open the way for changing business processes and business network transformation. ZFS, virtualization, DTrace, network virtualization, identity management and many other capabilities make Solaris and Oracle software the ideal solutions for the changing business landscape. Compliance and security Support for and integration with SAP GRC as well as robust secure as configured OS-level security are important enterprise considerations. Low TCO Solaris, though often thought of in the context of high-end RISC servers, is included with Sun servers. For customers facing challenging business and technical requirements such as lowering costs, simplifying system administration, and maintaining high service levels, the Oracle Solaris operating system is the ideal choice. Only Solaris innovative, built-in features deliver:

SAP on Oracle Solaris 25 Reliability Availability Predictive Self Healing provides both hardware and software resiliency with automatic predictive component retirement, software restart, and live upgrade of the OS and applications, as well as simplified service administration that reduces opportunities for errors Data Integrity Oracle Solaris ZFS, an advanced file system, provides unmatched data integrity, automated error correction, and integrated data services that include unlimited snapshots and file compression DTrace DTrace Analytics provide safe, live observability from the lowest level of the kernel to high-level application constructs, allowing you to optimize performance and quickly solve issues in production environments Performance/Scalability Optimization Solaris is optimized for the latest SPARC, Intel, and AMD processor technologies, high performance flexible networking, encryption acceleration, and memory allocation Efficient Consolidation Oracle Solaris Containers provide built-in, high-performance and flexible virtualization on any system, allowing for highly efficient consolidation, relocation and replication of application environments. 34 32 OPTIMIZING STORAGE IN SAP WITH ORACLE DATABASE 11g RELEASE 2 Introduction Using actual customer data, Oracle Database 11g Release 2 compression and space optimizations reduced the overall size of SAP systems from 4.7 TB to 1.9 TB for R/3 (ECC6.0), from 1.4 TB to 0.5 TB for BW (7.0) and from 0.9 TB to 0.3 TB for CRM (7.0). This article discusses the Oracle Database 11g Release 2 capabilities that enable database administrators to control the ever-expanding storage volumes of their SAP databases and quantifies how those features will benefit the underlying database in a SAP environment. Exponential increases in data volumes in recent years have put enterprise IT infrastructures under severe pressure from a cost, performance, scalability and manageability perspective. It has become imperative to employ more efficient ways of storing and managing data to meet the growing demands being placed on IT systems. Drastic increases in storage volumes are evident in all types of applications, however, enterprise applications have proven to be among the fastest growing applications. Businesses also have growing requirements to run applications and analytics faster and faster in spite of the growth in storage volumes. The capabilities provided by Oracle s Advanced Compression Option (ACO) enables many customers to run the database in an in-memory mode by being able to fit the entire working set of the application in memory after 2x to 3x compression giving applications a significant leap in performance. And given the growth experienced by today s databases, operations like backups are increasingly seen as taking longer to perform Oracle s Advanced Compression Option can help make those operational tasks faster, thereby providing both storage efficiency + performance as benefits. Even prior to Oracle Database 11g, Oracle had already been a world leader in storage efficiency for customer data Oracle s database size is generally significantly smaller than other databases because of the key attributes of Oracle s data representation on disk (see Storage Efficiency section below). This has helped Oracle databases, especially under SAP, to be more efficient in terms of data storage compared to other vendors databases. Now with Oracle Database 11g Release 2, Oracle has again set the industry standard by becoming a leader in compressed technology. Storage Efficiency Even before applying compression, there are significant advantages in the way data is internally stored in an Oracle database. Oracle s storage structures focus on efficiency and utilize only the minimum required space for each data type. Numeric data is stored with variable length in Oracle - NUMBER data type which means that Oracle uses only the minimum required space to store the NUMBER data type. Compare this to other DBMSes, which often store numeric data using a fixed length format - DECI MAL data type. A DECIMAL(16,2) data type, for example, will require 16 digits in other DBMSes no matter the actual number of digits. Similarly, when storing variable length character data using VARCHAR, there is often more overhead with other DBMSes than with Oracle Database. Some DBMSes uses four additional bytes to store information about VARCHAR data, irrespective of the size of actual data. For example, a VARCHAR(10) field containing the string DB could require a total of 2+4=6 bytes of storage in other DBMSes. Oracle Database s overhead for storing such data can be as small as one byte, depending on the actual data size. In this example, Oracle Database will use only one additional byte to store information and will require 2+1=3 bytes of storage.

Optimizing Storage in SAP 33 To understand the impact of Oracle s efficient internal storage structures on real world data, it is important to remember that even without compression there are significant differences in the way data is internally stored in Oracle compared to other DBMS es. Because of this greater storage efficiency, Oracle requires less storage space, out-of-the-box, for the same data compared to other DBMS es even without (explicit) compression. Depending on the table structure, this difference can easily get extended to a point where other DBMSs use 40-50% more space than Oracle Database to store an equivalent dataset in a real world setting. Index Compression and Bitmap Indexes Index compression is part of the Enterprise Edition so no additional options or licenses are required. Index compression allows compression of key column values in an index or index organized table, thereby reducing the storage for repeated values. Starting with Oracle Database , SAP certified the use of index compression to save disk space for indexes and reduce total database size on disk. Customer experiences show that up to 75% less disk space (compared to using non-compressed indexes) is needed for key compressed indexes. Real world example: The size of the index GLPCA~1 was reduced from 18GB to 4.5GB. Even after full database reorganization has taken place, an additional 20% of total disk space reduction for the whole database can be achieved using index compression. significant performance improvements. For columns where each value is repeated hundreds or thousands of times, a bitmap index typically could be less than 25% of the size of a regular B-tree index. Oracle Advanced Compression The Oracle Database 11g Advanced Compression Option introduces a comprehensive set of compression capabilities to help customers maximize resource utilization and reduce storage costs. It allows IT administrators to significantly reduce their overall database storage footprint by enabling compression for all types of data be it relational (OLTP table compression), unstructured (SecureFiles Compression and Deduplication), network (Data Guard Redo Transport) or backup (RMAN and Data Pump) data. Although storage cost savings are often seen as the most tangible benefit of compression, innovative technologies included in the Advanced Compression Option are designed to reduce resource requirements and technology costs for a number of components of your IT infrastructure, including memory and network bandwidth. A brief description of each Advanced Compression capability is outlined below, followed by an example benefit of implementing that features in a SAP environment. Bitmap indexes are used in SAP BW to model star and snow flake schema s in the database. Through the use of bitmap indexes, Oracle is able to implement highly efficient star transformation techniques for SAP BW reports. Bitmap indexes are compressed by definition and do not require compression to be turned on separately. A bitmap index uses a bitmap (or bit vector) for each key value instead of a list of row identifiers. As the bitmap representation is very efficient from a storage perspective, bitmap indexes can save significant space over other index types, especially for low and medium cardinality data, and also provide

34 OLTP Table Compression Oracle s OLTP Table Compression uses a unique compression algorithm specifically designed to work with OLTP applications. The algorithm works by eliminating duplicate values within a database block, even across multiple columns. The compression ratio achieved in a given environment depends on the nature of the data being compressed, specifically the cardinality of the data. In general, SAP customers can expect to reduce their storage space consumption by a factor of 2x to 4x by using the OLTP Table Compression feature. That is, the amount of space consumed by compressed data will be two to four times smaller than that of the uncompressed data. The benefits of OLTP Table Compression go beyond just on-disk storage savings. One significant advantage is Oracle s ability to read data in compressed blocks directly without having to first uncompress the block. Therefore, there is no measurable performance degradation for accessing compressed data. In fact, in many cases performance will improve due to the reduction in I/O since Oracle will have to access fewer blocks. Furthermore, the buffer cache will become more efficient by storing more data without having to add memory. SecureFiles Compression and Deduplication SecureFiles, a feature introduced in Oracle Database 11g Release 1, offers a best-of-both-worlds architecture for storing semi-structured and unstructured content, such as documents, spreadsheets and XML files. SecureFiles is specifically engineered to deliver high performance for file data comparable to that of traditional file systems, while retaining the advantages of the Oracle database. SecureFiles is designed as a superset of the ANSI standard LOB data type and offers easy migration from existing BasicFile LOBs, the precursor to SecureFiles. Securefiles are important for the following reasons: Very important for SAP Applications like CRM, Portal and PI as they use the LOB Data type a lot for storing documents, contracts, workflow information and etc Significantly faster access times compared to LOBs in SAP environments improved performance over Basicfiles and LONGs for larger LOBs Improved Oracle RAC scalability over Basicfiles increased transaction throughput on SAP cluster tables especially with Oracle RAC Prerequisite for compression and encryption Used by all SAP products in the following way: Replacing LONG and LONG RAWs used in many SAP tables such as SAP cluster tables in SAP ERP Advanced Compression has two storage optimization features that can be leveraged with SecureFiles. The first feature, SecureFiles Deduplication, is an intelligent technology that eliminates duplicate copies of SecureFiles data. Oracle stores one copy of the SecureFiles LOB and replaces the duplicate copies with references to the first copy. Consider a content management application where 10 users store an identical 1MB document in the system. Without SecureFiles Deduplication, the system would store one copy of the file for each of the 10 users requiring 10MB of storage. If the application uses SecureFiles with Deduplication, it will store the 1MB attachment just once. That s a 90% savings in storage requirements. The second feature, SecureFiles Compression, utilizes industry standard compression algorithms to further minimize the storage requirements of SecureFiles data. With SecureFiles compression typical files, such as documents or XML files, experience a reduction of 2x to 3x in size. Using built-in intelligence, SecureFiles Compression automatically avoids compressing data that would not benefit from compression for instance a document that was compressed via a 3rd party tool before being inserted into the database as a SecureFiles file. With three levels of compression available (LOW, MEDIUM and HIGH), users can determine the optimal storage savings and compression CPU overhead for their environment. SecureFiles compression can result in huge storage savings for applications storing unstructured data inside the database.

Optimizing Storage in SAP 35 Backup Compression In addition to compressing data stored inside the database, Oracle Advanced Compression also includes the capability to compress backup data. Recovery Manager (RMAN) and Data Pump are the two most commonly used tools to backup the data stored inside an Oracle Database. RMAN makes a block-by-block backup of the database data, also known as a physical backup, which can be used to perform database, tablespace or block level recovery. Data Pump is used to perform a logical backup by offloading data from one or more tables into a flat file. Oracle Advanced Compression includes the capability to compress the backup data generated by both of these tools. Oracle Advanced Compression includes RMAN compression technology that can dramatically reduce the storage requirements for backup data. Due to RMAN s tight integration with Oracle Database, backup data is compressed before it is written to disk or tape and doesn t need to be uncompressed before recovery providing an enormous reduction in storage costs. Similarly, the data and metadata generated by Data Pump exports can be compressed with Advanced Compression. Data Pump compression is an inline operation, so the reduced dump file size means a significant savings in disk space. But unlike operating system or file system compression utilities, there is no need to uncompress a Data Pump dump file before importing it. Data Guard Redo Transport Services are used to transfer this redo data to the standby site(s). With Advanced Compression, redo data may be transmitted in a compressed format to reduce network bandwidth consumption and in some cases reduce transmission time of redo data. As of Oracle Database 11g Release 2, redo data can be transmitted in a compressed format when the Oracle Data Guard configuration uses either synchronous redo transport (SYNC) or asynchronous redo transport (ASYNC). SAP Benefits with Advanced Compression Using various customers SAP data, Oracle conducted tests using Advanced Compression features to estimate the total storage savings in a SAP environment. Features such as OLTP table compression, index prefix compression, RMAN compression and Data Pump compression yielded significant savings. The table below outlines the extraordinary benefits of Advanced Compression for SAP. Network Compression Oracle Data Guard provides the management, monitoring, and automation software infrastructure needed to create, maintain, and monitor one or more standby databases to protect enterprise data from failures, disasters, errors and data corruption. Data Guard maintains synchronization of primary and standby databases using redo data (the information required to recover a transaction). As transactions occur in the primary database, redo data is generated and written to the local redo log files. Implementation Overview for Compression in SAP Environments Below are some basic implementation guidelines regarding how to approach an Oracle Database 11g Release 2 upgrade in terms of implementing compression technologies in SAP environments for the purpose of storage optimization:

36 1. Start with Index Compression Improves R/3 performance the most as all database access in R/3 environments is index based, especially index range scans Up to 20% disk space reduction for complete database 2. Implement OLTP Table Compression Reporting queries and OLTP run faster by being able to hold more data in the buffer cache and reducing disk I/O Provides very good disk space savings 3. Implement SecureFiles Compression Very important for SAP Applications like CRM or XI who store large (uncompressed) amount of data in LOBs 4. RMAN Backup Compression Additional disk space savings (even if database tables and indexes are already compressed) The main advantage of deferred segment creation is storage savings for application tables that are automatically created but never populated with data. In addition to the space savings, deferred segment creation increases the speed of SAP system installation since it eliminates the space allocation operations for empty objects during a SAP installation. This type of behavior is extremely common in SAP environments, where typical installations create thousands of tables many of which are never populated with data. Queries on data dictionary tables are also faster. SAP heavily queries Oracle s data dictionary tables as part of its built-in space management processes. In many SAP implementations, up to 70% of tables are created but never populated. Therefore, deferred segment creation can significantly benefit SAP customers through storage savings, reduced installation time and performance improvements for querying data dictionary tables. SAP R/3 and BW Tables -- Compression Results Examples Dictionary Only Add Column Prior to Oracle Database 11g, adding new columns with DEFAULT values and a NOT NULL constraint to an existing table required both an exclusive lock on the table and the default value to be stored in all existing records. In Oracle Database 11g, the database optimizes the resource usage and storage requirements for this same operation. Specifically, default values of columns are maintained in the data dictionary for columns specified as NOT NULL. With this new feature, adding new columns with DEFAULT values and NOT NULL constraints only requires the necessary metadata to be stored in the data dictionary and no longer requires the default value to be stored physically in all existing records. Additional SAP Compression/Storage Capabilities Deferred Segment Creation In Oracle Database 11g Release 2, non-partitioned heap-organized tables can take advantage of a new feature called Deferred Segment Creation (with this capability also works for partitioned objects (tables, indexes)). As the name implies, the segment creation for these tables is deferred until the first row is added to the table. In addition, LOB segments, and any associated indexes for that table, are deferred until the first row is inserted. Adding columns in this manner is very common for both the SAP BW applications and SAP upgrades. In general, the benefits of dictionary only add column include: Sub-second schema modifications and no space usage regardless of the size of the table or added columns While tables of all sizes benefit from this feature, adding columns to large tables in this fashion is dramatically faster Significantly reduces disk space usage

Optimizing Storage in SAP 37 The process of adding columns in SAP BW triggered through cube changes is now more than 20x faster. Cube changes are very frequently triggered by BW users when additional key figures are needed in SAP BW reports Similar performance improvement can be seen for SAP upgrades as additional columns are added for tables Unicode Charactersets Oracle uses a variable length representation on disk for multi-byte character sets; SAP uses the UTF-8 character set within the Oracle Database for SAP Unicode systems. The variable length representation is a significant space advantage, compared to other database vendors, which reportedly have to use a fixed 2 Byte character set for SAP Unicode systems. About 40% of disk space is saved by using the variable length UTF-8 character set for SAP enabled Unicode systems compared to the fixed multi-byte representation of other databases. Unicode is becoming very important for the following reasons: Upcoming new SAP versions are Unicode only All Java based SAP products require Unicode Additional SAP Compression/Storage Benefits Using various customers SAP data, Oracle conducted tests using the additional Oracle capabilities to estimate the storage savings in a SAP environment. The table below outlines the additional estimated storage benefits provided by these capabilities: Conclusion To quantify the results in an SAP environment, customer data was used to compare the storage consumption before and after implementing the individual features. Using this actual customer data, Oracle 11g Release 2 compression and space optimizations reduced the overall size of their SAP systems from 4.7 TB to 1.9 TB for R/3 (ECC6.0), from 1.4 TB to 0.5 TB for a BW (7.0) and from 0.9 TB to 0.3 TB for CRM (7.0). The explosion in data volume being experienced by enterprises introduces significant challenges. Companies must quickly adapt to the changing business landscape without impacting the bottom line. IT managers need to efficiently manage their existing infrastructure to control costs, yet continue to deliver extraordinary application performance. Built-in Oracle database capabilities including: Index Compression, Deferred Segment Creation, Dictionary Only Add Column, Storage Efficiency, Bitmap Index s and Unicode Character sets provide SAP users with significant advantages in storage savings, improved data dictionary query performance and faster SAP installation times. The Advanced Compression Option of Oracle Database 11g provides a robust set of compression capabilities that enable IT managers to succeed in this complex environment. Using the Advanced Compression Option, enterprises can efficiently manage their increasing data requirements throughout all components of their data center minimizing costs while continuing to achieve the highest levels of application performance.

38 ORACLE DATABASE SECURITY FOR SAP APPLICATIONS Summary Historically, performance and high availability have been two of the key drivers behind IT decision making. Over the past decade, however, security has become a critical component in that list. While problems such as data theft and insider threats are certainly not new, the concern over unauthorized access to sensitive information has never been greater. The cost of data theft from both a financial and public relations standpoint can be significant. At the same time compliance with regulations such as Sarbanes- Oxley (SOX), European Union Data Protection Directive, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS), and numerous breach disclosure laws requires strong controls on access to sensitive data. Many regulations have common themes that require strong and demonstrable controls on access to sensitive data as well as separation of duty. While many regulatory requirements are procedural in nature, technical solutions are required to mitigate the risks associated with items such as unauthorized access and modification of data. The goal of this article is to address three of the most common misconceptions about database security in SAP environments: In SAP environments, there is a lot you can do to increase security, e. g. on the network or on the application level, but almost nothing can be done on the database level. In order to address this misconception, we will discuss what can and should be done on the database level, if you use Oracle Database 10g or Oracle Database 11g for your SAP systems. Security means encryption. If this were true, it would be impossible to understand why Oracle offers two different security-related products to SAP customers. We will, therefore, discuss these two products Oracle Advanced Security and Oracle Database Vault and see what their main differences are. Database security can help fix application security issues. This one is obviously different from the previous misconceptions. Whereas in the first two cases people expect too little, here they expect too much. So whereas in our discussion of topics number 1 and 2 we will show how much Oracle s securityrelated products and features can do, in our discussion of this third topic we will need to clarify in which cases the Oracle products can help and in which cases you should look for other tools (see figure 1). The next section will draw an overall picture in order to give you an idea what to expect from Oracle Advanced Security and Oracle Database Vault and which product should be used for which purpose. Then each of these products will be discussed in more detail. Putting the pieces together You want to protect the data created by SAP applications and are stored in an Oracle database. But, how do you do that? What are the threats and what are the measures you can take? Three main scenarios can be distinguished, which are defined by three different access strategies to the data in the database. Scenario 1: If a user wants to read and/or update data in the database, the first and obvious way is the usage of interfaces provided by SAP s applications (see figure 2). From an Oracle perspective, this is the easiest case, because all questions Which people should be able to access the data and which people should not? Which part of the data should a particular person be able to access? What exactly should this person be able to do with the data? are asked and answered by SAP s User and Privilege Management. This means: All legal data accesses are managed by the SAP system itself. You should use the features provided by SAP to define the users as well as their privileges. And there is not much Oracle could or would need to add, as long as there are only well-behaved users.

Oracle Database Security for SAP Applications 39 If we put this statement in a different way, we get the rule: Oracle s security products and features are required to prevent data accesses which bypass the SAP applications, use non-sap tools to inspect the database and are at least potentially illegal. Scenario 2: E. g. you could steal a copy of the database files and read the files directly (see figure 3). Of course, these files are not simple text files, so a lot of knowledge about SAP s data model and Oracle s data storage algorithms would be required. So it is difficult. But it is not impossible. This is when encryption becomes interesting. Data encryption means that data are not stored as plain text, but in a coded form. Therefore the information in the data files looks like nonsense and is completely meaningless to everybody who tries to read the data files directly. Scenario 3: But there is yet another unusual way to the data. Privileged database users e. g. database administrators can use DBA tools and directly connect to the database, thus bypassing SAP s security checks (see figure 4). The first aspect that needs to be understood when considering this scenario is that encryption does not help against this kind of threat. If someone is able to connect to the Oracle Database using a sufficiently privileged account, if then he or she is able to build an appropriate SELECT statement and send it to the database, then Oracle will generously deliver the result set to this user. And if the data is encrypted on disk, then Oracle will even decrypt them, because from an Oracle Database perspective the request sent by this user seems to be a perfectly valid request. The second aspect that needs to be understood is the reason for Oracle s behavior. As a database user you can be granted object privileges and system privileges. There are many different kinds of objects in a database, but average database users as well as people who want to steal data are only interested in tables, so for simplicity s sake we will assume that database objects means just tables. An object privilege for this or that table, then, means that you are allowed to access the data in this or that table. A system privilege, on the other hand, means that you are allowed to manipulate the database structure. You may add disk space Figure 1: SAP and Oracle security. The green area indicates the realm that is protected by Oracle security products and features. The white area is protected by SAP security features, potentially also by third-party products. Figure 2: Regular data access via SAP applications. SAP user and privilege management handles access control. to (or release it from) the database, you may createnew tables (or drop existing ones). Now, in traditional databases (including the Oracle Database), if you were explicitly granted a sufficient set of system privileges, you implicitly received object privileges for all tables as well. For decades people found this quite natural and unproblematic. Only recently companies began to ask: Is it really necessary and is it really desirable that a database administrator, who is supposed to manage the database structure, is by default able to read (and even change) all data in the database?

40 why the database administrator should be able to access the data as well, then he or she as everybody else should be granted the required object privileges explicitly. This is exactly what Oracle Database Vault does. It replaces the traditional, somewhat clumsy privilege management strategy by a new, more flexible one. It eliminates all implicit grants and instead provides means to explicitly define access rights and the circumstances under which they are effective which go far beyond traditional user privilege or user role correlations. It allows customers to implement and enforce concepts such as the segregation of duties or the four eyes principle. Figure 3: Attempted data access using a copy of the database files. Oracle Advanced Security (Transparent Data Encryption and Backup Set Encryption) prevents such illegal access. Putting the pieces together, it can be said that all data accesses using SAP s applications are handled by SAP, so there is not much Oracle can or needs to do. However, if people use other strategies to access the data in your database, there is not much SAP can do, and this is exactly when Oracle s security products can help you protect your data. Encryption prevents people from directly reading the database files. And Database Vault prevents people from accessing the data via standard database tools. Figure 4: Attempted data access using SQL statements and database tools. Oracle Database Vault prevents such potentially illegal access. So the third aspect that needs to be understood is that the third scenario requires a new privilege management strategy in the database. This strategy should continue to provide system privileges and object privileges, but it should get rid of implicitly granted object privileges. In other words: A normal database user needs object privileges only, and a database administrator in most cases needs system privileges only. If there is a reason Oracle Advanced Security for SAP In the previous section, we tried to understand why Oracle provides two separate security-related products for SAP customers. In this section we take a closer look at encryption, and again we find that Oracle does not provide one single encryption feature, but a bundle of several encryption features. This bundle is called Oracle Advanced Security, an option to Oracle Database 11g as well as to Oracle Database 10g. Network Encryption In the previous section, we tried to make things as simple as possible, and therefore we only looked at data in the database. But, before (and after) they are stored in the database, data travels over the network. And people can not only try to read data in the database files, they can also try to sniff the data when they are in transit. Therefore, a first set of technologies provided by Oracle Advanced Security is related to network encryption.

Oracle Database Security for SAP Applications 41 In this context, network encryption means: Oracle encrypts data travelling between the Oracle Database Server and the Oracle Database Client machines. In SAP environments, users do not directly connect to the Oracle Database Server. They connect to SAP Application Server instance, and the SAP Application Server instance(s) in turn connect(s) to the Oracle Database Server. So, in this case, the Application Server instance(s) is (are) the Oracle client(s), and Oracle s network encryption encrypts all data traveling between Application Server(s) and Database Server, but not the data traveling between user devices and Application Server instances. However, people can not only try to read data in transit, they can also try to intercept and modify them. Therefore, in addition to network encryption, Oracle Advanced Security also supports crypto-checksumming to ensure data integrity. Both encryption and crypto-checksumming are completely transparent to the application, and in both areas the system administrator can chose between several algorithms. For details, please see SAP Note Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) Transparent Data Encryption means: encryption is applied to data in the files which make up the production database (as opposed to backup files, which will be discussed in the next paragraph). There are two main implementation strategies: column encryption and tablespace encryption. Column encryption was introduced in Oracle Database 10g, and it is supported by SAP for both Oracle Database 10g and Oracle Database 11g. The basic idea here is that you protect the most sensitive data only. You pick a few columns that contain information such as social security numbers, salaries, etc., and you encrypt nothing but those columns. This minimalist approach provides a balance between security requirements and CPU load resp. performance considerations. Tablespace encryption is an Oracle Database 11g feature. Using a new algorithm, it was possible to considerably reduce the CPU overhead related to data encryption. Therefore, it is no longer necessary to restrict encryption to a few columns only. Whole tables or tablespaces can be encrypted with minimal CPU overhead. Given SAP s data model, which consists of tens of thousands of tables, the implementation of tablespace encryption is much easier for SAP on Oracle customers than the implementation of column encryption. As the name indicates, TDE is transparent to the application, i. e. no application changes are required. Starting with version 7.20, you can use BRSPACE to set the encryption attribute on tablespace level. BRSPACE can also be used to manage the wallet, which stores the encryption keys. For details see SAP Note (BR*Tools support for Oracle 11g encryption) and (Transparent Data Encryption for SAP). Backup Encryption Especially if you decide to use column encryption in your production database, you may want to increase the security level of your database backups, as it is generally much easier to steal backups of the database files than the production database itself. Therefore, the third set of features in Oracle Advanced Security is related to backup encryption. If you simply backup your database files, only those columns that are encrypted in the production database files are encrypted in the backup copies. However, combining Oracle s Recovery Manager (RMAN) and Advanced Security, whole backup sets, i. e. all data can be encrypted. Backup encryption, like column encryption, is available in both Oracle Database 10g and Oracle Database 11g. For details see SAP Note Oracle Database Vault for SAP Oracle Database Vault is an option that extends the functionality and the power of Oracle Database 11g as well as of Oracle Database 10g. Both Oracle Database Vault 10g and 11g have been certified by SAP for use with all SAP applications. 44 42 Access Control Components As described before, Oracle Database Vault is designed to protect your data against insider threats by enabling you to define very flexible access policies. Access control components are the pieces that are used to build access policies. Two groups of them can be distinguished. The concept of realms constitutes a group on its own. It is the basis for everything else. A realm is basically a container for database objects. As in the previous section, we will only consider tables and neglect all other kinds of objects for simplicity s sake. A database can contain many tables, but it would be very cumbersome to define a complex security policy for every single table. On the other hand there is no guarantee that the same policy would be appropriate for all tables. That is why Oracle Database Vault supports the concept of realms. The idea is that a realm is a group of tables to which the same access policy applies. So as the first implementation step you create one realm or several realms, and as the second step you assign every single table to its appropriate realm. a working day, if the attempt happens between 8 am and 6 pm. Rule sets are combinations of rules. As usual, rules can be combined by AND and by OR: Access is allowed (a) if it is a working day OR (b) if it is a weekend AND the IP address tells us that the user is inside the company network. A realm and a rule set assigned to this realm are the minimal form of what we initially called access or security policy. The expression multi-factor authorization, which is used in some papers, means exactly the same thing. When you design an access policy, you are not restricted to one factor (ultimately: one rule), but you can combine as many factors as necessary to determine whether or not the attempted access should be allowed. A command rule is a special kind of rule. As the name suggests, it is related to a specific command: An ALTER TABLE is allowed, if it is a working day, but not if it is a weekend day. Secure application roles are database roles that are or are not enabled by the database system (i.e. a PL/ SQL procedure) after evaluation of a specific rule set. The second group comprises the concepts of factors, identities, rules, rule sets, command rules, and secure application roles. These are the building blocks that you use to create access policies for your realm(s). A factor is an attribute of a data access (or an attempted data access) that can be determined automatically by the database server. Examples are: the IP address, the day of the week, the time. The problem with factors is that they are just stupid facts. In most cases there are too many possible values (IP addresses, access times), and in all cases they don t mean much. Identities, therefore, add meaning to those values, and in most cases they do this by defining a very small number of possible types. E. g., the IP address could indicate that the user is working in the data center, (some-where else) inside the company network, or outside of the company network. Days of the week can be working days or weekend days. An access time could be within typical working hours or outside working hours. Identities can be used to build rules. A rule could say: It is allowed to access the tables in this realm, if the user is inside the company network, if it is Management and Monitoring As discussed so far, the access control components are just concepts. If you really want to make use of them, i.e. if you want to build an access control policy, you need a tool to make that happen. Oracle Database Vault provides an administrative console called Oracle Database Vault Administrator (DVA) for managing realms and rule sets. This application allows security managers to configure an access control policy through a user-friendly interface. DVA is also used in SAP environments. There is no additional or alternative tool provided by SAP. Having implemented an access control policy, you want to monitor, how it works (what it does and what people do). Therefore, Oracle Database Vault comes with an auditing feature, which allows you to track both successful and failed attempts based on different characteristics (in particular realms, factors, rule sets). In addition, Oracle Database Vault provides predefined reports which allow you to check the consistency of your access policy as well as security violation attempts. And of course there is a userfriendly interface that allows you to design additional reports.

Oracle Database Security for SAP Applications 43 Policy Implementation Levels Database Vault, as sold by Oracle, is just a tool box. It is true that it comes with predefined realms and roles, but those are realms for system tables (such as the Oracle Database data dictionary or the tables that Database Vault needs itself) and very general (if fundamental) roles (such as the distinction between database administrator and security administrator). So these predefined components allow Database Vault to be functional and allow you to use it, but they do not protect your application data. That is because Oracle does not know anything about your applications and your data. Oracle can only give you a toolbox, and it is up to you to determine your security requirements and translate these requirements into an access control policy. But there is an important difference. As long as customers use home grown applications, it is simply inefficient for Oracle to care. If, however, tens or hundreds of thousands of companies use a certain standard application and the security requirements of all these companies are at least to a certain point identical, because they are results of the application design, then it makes much more sense for Oracle to analyze the requirements and implement a basic security policy. Oracle has actually done this, because this way we can save hundreds of thousands of customers the time that is needed to implement the boring basics of an application-specific security policy, and we can also protect these customers from forgetting to implement some of the basics. As of today, Oracle provides a whole family of predefined applicationspecific Database Vault policies, and Oracle Database Vault for SAP is a member of this family. This means: Considering Oracle Database Vault for SAP, you should distinguish between three levels. The first level is just the toolbox, which allows you to work with Database Vault. The second level is a predefined access control policy which covers the basic requirements of SAP applications. Finally, if the predefined policy does not cover all your requirements, there is a third level which allows you to modify or enhance the predefined policy. Application-specific Policy Enhancements (Customer) Application-specific Default Policy (Oracle) Database Vault Access Control Components (Oracle) Figure 5: Oracle Database Vault security policy implementation levels. Oracle Database Vault for SAP What exactly does Oracle Database Vault for SAP do? What exactly does application-specific security requirements mean? Here are just a few examples: Some aspects are obvious and similar to policies appropriate for other applications. E. g. a dedicated SAP realm needs to be created and the database objects that contain the SAP data need to be assigned to this realm. Also certain database users should no longer be able to connect using applications than those provided by SAP. But there are more specific aspects. E. g., it is typical for SAP applications running on top of an Oracle database that the BR*Tools family of administration tools are used to manage the database. Therefore, an SAP-specific security policy needs to make sure that even after installation and activation of Oracle Database Vault all BR*Tools operations are still possible and work as expected. It is typical for SAP systems that SAP Support needs to perform remote connects. Therefore, a SAPspecific security policy needs to create a dedicated database user for SAP Support. This account may be (and by default is) disabled, but it can be easily enabled whenever this is necessary. And, of course, enabling and disabling this account needs to be audited. It is typical for SAP systems that customers can use an ABAP and/or a Java stack. Therefore, a SAPspecific security policy needs to distinguish between data accesses via the ABAP and the Java stack. 52 50 DATABASE 11 g UTILIZING ADVANCED CUSTOMER SERVICES (ACS) FOR SAP ON ORACLE AND ORACLE DATABASE 11 g RELEASE 2 Chevron Corporation We were able to complete the SAP and Oracle DB integration process in a short period of time, and reduced the data volume by 60% thanks to the Oracle Advanced Compression option. Spokes person, SHARP Corporation. Global integration of SAP and Oracle Database Efficient skill acquisition through utilization of the Oracle Advanced Customer Services (ACS) for SAP on Oracle, results in a successful launch of production operations, by the targeted date. We were able to complete the SAP and Oracle DB integration process in a short period of time, and reduced the data volume by 60% thanks to the Oracle Advanced Compression option, claims a spokesperson from SHARP Corporation. SHARP Corporation (SHARP) is a worldleading manufacturer of general home electronics products that produces Aquos, one of the major brands of LCD TVs. SHARP planned to consolidate and integrate SAP systems and Oracle databases, which had both been in various locations around the world, in a single instance configuration at each location. SHARP integrated SAP ERP 6.0 on the Oracle Database 11g by utilizing Oracle Advanced Customer Services for SAP. We interviewed Mr. Shinji Hara, Assistant Executive Director of the First IT Promotion Dept, IT System Promotion Center, SHARP, and Mr. Takashi Tamashima, Group Leader of the Solution Engineering Dept, Second Service Division, SI Solutions Co., Ltd. (SI Solutions). SI Solutions has vast experience in implementing SAP globally, primarily for SHARP production and sales companies. Based on the expertise gained through such achievements, SI Solutions offers templates that assist in the formulation of mission-critical operations, and a range of solutions to business issues existing in the high-tech industry. Early stages of implementing SAP and the Oracle Database in the mid-1990s Since SHARP was established in 1912, the business has gained a good reputation in Japan and overseas as being a company that is competent at creating specific types of demand. SHARP succeeded in establishing mass production of solar batteries as well as being the first company in the world to commercialize electronic calculators and LCD display products. SHARP is a leading Japanese company that holds to the policy of Manufacturing products strictly to satisfy customers while at the same time proposing new lifestyle options to users through the introduction and expansion of electronic technology. Starting in approximately 1994, SHARP rolled out the big bang approach to implement SAP into the operations of their overseas bases, a process that is now almost completed. In a process that took place at bases in Japan around 1997, SHARP began replacing the host system with a system that incorporated SAP and the Oracle Database. Mr. Hara explains the reason why SHARP selected the Oracle Database. After evaluating several products, we determined SAP would be the global standard. As for the database, we selected Oracle because of its level of reliability and global support structure. Consolidating and integrating all separately installed SAP systems and Oracle databases at various bases When the process of instance integration (integrating multiple instances to a single instance) in each region had started, a number of concerns were raised, says Mr. Tamashima. The database would become extremely large and consequently require an extraordinary large amount of storage due to our attempt to integrate systems that had their own instances and that were being used independently. This raised

Oracle Advanced Compression at SHARP Japan 51 As for the database, we selected Oracle because of its level of reliability and global support structure. our concerns about performance. We explored ways to control the size of the database and to access data efficiently even if the size of the database became large so as to maintain a satisfactory level of database performance. To solve these problems, we decided that Oracle Database 11g was best suited to utilize its Advanced Compression feature to compress data and the partitioning feature to logically partition the database. There were other reasons why SHARP selected Oracle Database 11g for the consolidation and integration of SAP and the company s database. SHARP at that time was spending approximately half of their system operation budget solely on storage-related expenses, and they seriously needed to consider reducing TCO. In other words, data compression using Oracle Database 11g became an important key in view of performance and TCO. SHARP was also concerned that the integration process would result in an increase in load on the database, but an around-the-clock service was required for the system because SHARP had expanded their business worldwide. For that reason, SHARP decided to take into consideration the future utilization of Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC), available since Oracle Database 9i. Utilizing ACS for SAP on Oracle to implement the system in a short period of time In this project, launching production operations in January of 2011 was a critical prerequisite. However, Oracle Database 11g with its partitioning and data compression features that would have solved the problems SHARP was experiencing, was not going to be released until the end of March This meant that SI Solutions, which was committed to implementing the system for SHARP, had to successfully complete what was an extensive project within just six months. It was at that point that SI Solutions decided to utilize ACS for SAP on Oracle. Mr. Tamashima talks about this decision. Takashi Tamashima, Group Leader of the Engineering Dept, SHARP, Japan

52 Oracle Advanced Compression at SHARP Japan As Oracle Database 11g was going to be released in March, consequently the schedule was fixed so that we would start our work in July and launch production operations the following January. We realized that with the given schedule we would not be able to implement the system and check the procedures by ourselves before starting production operations. To reduce the man-hours and time required, we considered requesting the service of ACS for SAP on Oracle. Actually, we relied on this service when we previously explored implementation of Oracle Data Guard. Advanced Customer Services for SAP on Oracle provided excellent support at that time and we were able to acquire necessary skills in a short period of time. We were also able to drastically reduce man-hours spent on inspections. Through such an experience, we decided to adopt the service again for this operation. Oracle staffers took appropriate actions promptly as we expected, and when we came to a standstill with problems, they directed us to try new and different ways to overcome problems. As a result, we were able to save time and reduce the workload required for inspections. As they provided us with procedures that suited the SHARP system, we were able to implement our work very smoothly and launch production operations in January 2011 as scheduled. Acquiring skills efficiently and succeeding at reducing data volume by 60% According to Mr. Tamashima, the data compression executed at that time enabled SHARP to reduce the relevant data volume by approximately 60%. Utilizing ACS for SAP on Oracle was also beneficial for SI Solutions as they were able to make use of the skills they acquired through the service. It will be a great advantage for SI Solutions to be able to apply the skills gained for direct sales activities in the future. Both companies thus gained substantial benefits. Regarding their future prospects, Mr. Hara commented: We would like to make compressing of all databases a standard rule. Reduction of data volume has had a significant effect on TCO reduction and disk capacity due to the fact we use an expensive storage device. In this respect, we feel that data compression is necessary and we will enforce that notion further. We hope that Oracle Japan will continue to provide us with new proposals, as was the case this time. We expect improvements and consolidations with Exadata for SAP. As Mr. Hara commented, database compression will not be limited to SAP. We will also compress other databases. I expect the experience of compressing SAP BW and the skills we gain from doing it will lead to more direct sales opportunities, Mr. Tamashima claims.

High rate of data growth, several optimization points Strong business, above-average increases in data volume like many other companies, TVS ENJOYS SIGNIFICANT ORACLE DATABASE 11 g Motor Company was faced with this situation and needed to find a way of countering this problem area, which was also a significant cost driver. For more than 10 years, this highly successful and growth-orientated company based in India has been using Oracle Database together with a distinct and intense-use SAP application landscape. Virtually all ERP ECC 6.0 modules are used, as are Netweaver Business Warehouse (7.01) and Process Integration (PI 7.0), which is used to link three non-sap applications with the central application landscape. More than 600 users work with this system environment where HP systems (rx6660 servers with HP-UX and EVA-4400 storage units) make up the hardware component. T. G. Dhandapani, Group CIO at TVS Motor Company, explains: We set ourselves the goal of finding an effective tool to counter our ever-rising and cost-intensive growth of data in SAP usage. Our database and our storage units were growing all the time which had impacted on storage costs, performance, database update times and also restore times. Since last December, TVS Motor has been using Oracle Database 11g for SAP. It has proven to be the ideal solution, delivering significant improvements through its beneficial Advanced Compression features.

Oracle Advanced Compression at TVS Motor Company 55 Problem-solver: Oracle Advanced Compression TVS Motor Company consciously opted for Oracle Database 11g and Oracle Compression in order to implement storage and database management optimizations. The IT team working for the growth-focused company had to choose from three possible options. Firstly, to significantly extend the storage systems, but this would have resulted in disproportionately high costs and a relatively long implementation period. Secondly, to use a data archiving concept and implement this gradually, but this would have taken a long time and the potential space savings would only have been marginal. And thirdly, to switch from Oracle Database version 10g to 11g and to tap into the farreaching database Advanced Compression features with the prospect of benefiting from several of these at the same time. Since we had already enjoyed positive experiences with the Oracle Database 10g feature Index Compression and we were able to benefit from very sustainable optimizations after testing with Oracle Database 11g, we decided to rapidly upgrade our Oracle database to Oracle Database 11g, continues Dhandapani. Firstly, the system was upgraded from 10g to 11g ( ). This process was a smooth and rapid one (not including preliminary work/tests: 6 hours). Then Advanced Compression was added and configuration/ settings/compression undertaken using BRtools. The time taken for the compression activity was 18 hours. Impressive and clear results TVS Motor Company is delighted with the results. Opting for Oracle Database 11g and the Advanced Compression features was the right choice and was certainly worth the investment. The improvements and benefits gained are clear to see. We are already planning the implementation of other 11g features such as Database Vault or Network Compression. The before and after values are miles apart and some of the optimizations are huge. For example, using Oracle Database 11g Advanced Compression, the company managed to reduce the size of its database (which had grown during the 10g to 11g upgrade to around 2.3 TB) by 60 percent to 0.8 TB. But that s not all. Response times have improved dramatically by a massive 56 percent. Before using 11g Advanced Compression, the database response times were 550 milliseconds, now they are 240. It has also been possible to cut the backup time from 9 to 3 hours. Advanced Compression has also been used successfully with the SAP Netweaver BWwhich is also running on Oracle DB. Other Oracle Database 11g features firmly in sight What s more, TVS Motor Company is also using other new Oracle Database 11g features in addition to Advanced Compression, including Real Application Testing (RAT) and Secure Files. RAT is a tool for testing and optimizing changes under real conditions to assess their impact on workload before they are adopted or go live, for example when upgrading from version 10g to 11g. Secure Files is a new type of data for storing large objects (LOBs). Unlike LOB technology, data stored in this format offers better performance and simplified management. You could say that Secure Files are compatible with database options such as Advanced Compression. As TVS Motor Company s CIO Dhandapani concludes: By using Oracle Database 11g and Advanced Compression we have gained major space savings and the cost savings aren t bad either. Our entire disk space management now also has a beneficial and firm footing for the future. We set ourselves the goal of finding an effective tool to counter our ever-rising and costintensive growth of data in SAP usage. Our database and our storage units were growing all the time which had impacted on storage costs, performance, database update times and also restore times. T.G. 60 58 SAP MAINFRAME MIGRATION EDP CASE-STUDY The Company EDP Energias de Portugal is one of Portugal s largest companies and also one of Europe s major electricity generation, distribution and trading. It has a strong presence in Spain, US, Africa and Latin America, mainly in Brazil. In 2007, EDP announced that 39% of its produced energy came from renewable sources and that it was aiming for a 75% target by To achieve that target, EDP bought the US company Horizon Wind Energy in what was the largest deal in renewable energy to date, and made EDP the world s fourth largest wind power producer. Beginning 2008, it became clear to EDP that they were facing important decisions about the future of their IT systems. At that time, EDP was running their core business in an ERP system within a Mainframe environment: 3-node Parallel Sysplex with 6400 MIPS DB2 v7 for SAP 40 TB databases 5 x IBM P561, 16-core AIX But these systems were facing severe operational challenges: The growth rate of the largest tables was on the verge of becoming blocked by DB/2 v7 partition size limit The processing capacity was, on average, more than 90% usage There was no space to provision for new functionalities To EDP, two very different paths laid ahead: Stay with the current Mainframe technology, replacing the existing equipment with new, more powered machines, and then upgrade the database to DB2 v8 and later to DB2 v9 Migrate to UNIX/Oracle technology The Challenge The first path was the easier one, but it was also the most expensive and it was really just a postponing of the problem. The rewards of the second option were many, but the path was not without obstacles: EDP relied on IS-U for all their sales, invoicing, 24x7 customer service (call center) and, as such, downtime had to be minimal The data on all environments accounted for more than 40 TB of data and IS-U Production is 14 TB in size. The first runs of the SAP unload procedure for IS-U took more than 13 days, which was a totally unacceptable downtime The IS-U SAP version was 4.6C and had no support for table splitting which made the migration using only SAP tools impossible Since the single use of standard SAP tools R3Load/Migmon was not viable, two other alternatives were analyzed: To copy the oldest data from the largest tables to temporary tables, would eventually reduce the migration time but required changes in the productive system and was very dependent on application changes Choosing a hybrid migration strategy using SAP tools for the smaller tables and developing special tools to handle the 8 largest tables. This seemed the best alternative At the end of July 2008, a decision was taken to go with the UNIX/Oracle migration before the year end. A migration strategy was prepared using direct path unload/load tools, namedpipes, network aggregates and other similar strategies to accelerate this migration speed. The maximum acceptable downtime was 5 days, including a 3 day weekend. On December 5, 18:00 WET, a Friday, the migration began.

Mainframe Migration to Oracle Database 59 The Migration The new environment was composed of 2-node cluster Sun Microsystems M core production DB servers 4 x Sun Microsystems T5240, 16-core production application servers 2-node cluster Sun Microsystems M core, quality DB servers 2 x Sun Microsystems T5240, 16-core production application servers. The team used the BMC Unload Plus and Oracle SQL*Loader to migrate the 8 largest tables. Each partition was unloaded in parallel with direct path. When completed, it was transferred by FTP to a UNIX named pipe, and immediately loaded into Oracle databases with SQL*Loader direct path. When the loading of the table was finished, its indexes were immediately generated. The Results All the 7 SAP Systems (including productive, quality and development) were migrated in 3.5 months, meeting all milestones on-time and on budget. Significant service improvements were accounted for: Overall dialog response time reduced by 35% Database response time reduced to 1/3 IS-U batch reduced in 3 hours Seven times more invoices produced per minute Unload Table BMC DBUnload Load Table sqlldr Part 1 ftp Part 1 Part 2 ftp Part 2... ftp... Part n ftp Part n All remaining tables were migrated using the standard SAP R3load and migmon process. The list of intermediate steps and total duration of the migration were as follows: Online full backup (and restore) in half the time of before No downtime needed to perform backups Average processing utilization of less than 10% on the new environment compares with more than 90% of the previous 6400 MIPS 3-node Mainframe cluster 1/20th of direct infrastructure cost Before: After: Tuesday, December 9 at 8:00 AM, the first working day of that week, the system was available to a few restricted users. The next day, Wednesday at 8:00 AM, all users had full system access to the new environment.

60 The database optimization feature Oracle Index Key Compression exceeded our expectations. Total index size was reduced 2.8 TB to around 875 GB, which meant considerable disk space savings. The total database volume shrank by 26.6% percent. GLENN CADMAN, SAP Technical Manager, National Foods ORACLE INDEX KEY COMPRESSION FOR SAP AT NATIONAL FOODS AUSTRALIA: EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS Industry: Food and beverage company producing household-name brands in milk and dairy beverages, juice, fresh dairy, cheese and soy dd Workforce: 4,000 in Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, and Singapore Oracle products: Oracle Database , SAP ECC size 7.6 TB before Index Key Compression Key benefits: Significant database size reduction of 26.6 percent, index size reduction of 70 percent, fast online implementation in 3 months, reduced backup volume, reduced number of backup tapes SAP: SAP ERP ECC 6.0, Netweaver BI 7.0, SCM 5.0 and others, over 1,700 named users Infrastructure: HP Superdome (HP-UX), HP XP24000 Storage Systems Profile: National Foods National Foods with headquarters in Melbourne is one of Australasia s largest food and beverage companies with a revenue of USD 3.56 billion in 2009, producing household-name brands in milk and dairy beverages, juice, fresh dairy, cheese and soy. National Foods is part of Lion Nathan National Foods, Australasia s largest food and beverage company. Today, National Foods employs more than 4,000 people. In addition to direct employment, the company makes a significant contribution to the Australian and New Zealand economies. National Foods is also a major supporter of local industry through sourcing of local raw materials and an integral part of the retail economy. In Australia, National Foods is the only milk business servicing the entire national market and buys 2.3 billion liters of milk that comes from more than 1,000 Australian farms to produce a range of full cream, flavored and modified fresh and UHT milks. The company also produces a range of popular block and premium specialty cheeses and is prominent in the soy beverage market. Over the coming years, National Foods will make a best practice marketing investment and focus on higher potential core brands to drive revenue and mix. Focus on optimization Information technology has long been an essential ingredient in day-to-day business at National Foods. Recent years have seen an increase in IT use in almost every area of the company, in a trend which is still continuing. This is due in part to the acquisitions by the well-known Australian food company. National Foods is an established user of core applications such as SAP ERP ECC 6.0, Netweaver BI and SCM and has gradually increased the number of functions it uses in these solutions. At the same time, the IT infrastructure linked to these solutions has steadily expanded. In response, both the server capacities (HP Superdome) and storage systems had to be gradually enlarged. The data volume of the database management system used for the application environment, ECC 6.0 and Oracle Database (Release ), was also growing rapidly eventually peaking at over 7.6 TB. Meanwhile, more than 1,700 users are making intensive use of the application solutions. The application environment and the associated IT infrastructure involve enormous costs. This means we re always looking to increase IT efficiency and use tools or technologies with an optimization effect, says Glenn Cadman, one of the team responsible for SAP at National Foods. Around five months ago the expansion-focused business found just what it was looking for in the database feature Oracle Index Key Compression. We benefit from Oracle Key Compression in numerous ways, says Cadman.

Index Key Compression at National Foods Australia 61 Immediate interest At a regular meeting with Oracle, the conversation turned to the success other customers have had with database optimization in association with SAP, and it was this that prompted the idea of using Oracle Index Key Compression. The potential for optimization offered by Index Key Compression met with immediate interest from National Foods. Oracle Index Key Compression can dramatically reduce index and disk space by shortening individual indexes within index blocks by up to 75%. The tool also offers other benefits from which business users stand to profit, including optimized I/O times, updates and backups, as well as a slimmer database. Cadman explains: The potential for optimization offered by Oracle Index Key Compression was exactly what we were looking for and it fitted in perfectly with National Foods ongoing efforts to increase efficiency. An archiving project that had been in the pipeline for some time had yet to deliver the urgently required space disk savings. The implementation and roll-out of Oracle Index Key Compression went without a hitch. Even though the company allowed itself plenty of time for the database optimization project with Oracle Index Key Compression, it took just three months from the meeting where the idea was first created until the tool went into productive use for the first time. The first stage involved identifying the top 20 indexes of 10 GB or more in size. These indexes were then compressed with Oracle Index Key Compression on a test system to analyze the situation before and after compression. The difference was striking, Cadman recalls. The Oracle compression feature achieved reductions of 40% - 90% on these huge indexes, one massive index: VBOX~0 reduced from 1.35 TB to 400 MB. We were very impressed. After these tests, optimization was extended to more indexes and performance tests were run. The Australian food giant was then finally able to roll out Oracle Index Key Compression. Significant savings Looking to the future National Foods was delighted at the results achieved with Oracle Index Key Compression: The Oracle database optimization feature exceeded our expectations. We were able to reduce the total index size from 2.8 TB to 875 GB, which meant considerable disk space savings. The database volume shrank by 26.6 percent. The company also achieved greater efficiency in another respect. By opting for Oracle Index Key Compression, it has reduced its backup volume at the same time in terms of both business copies and disaster recovery backups. At National Foods these are stored on tapes, and thanks to Oracle Key Compression the company now needs fewer tapes than before. In terms of compression, National Foods is already contemplating further optimization projects in conjunction with an upgrade to Oracle Database 11g Release 2 for SAP planned for deployment in Oracle Database 11g comes with Advanced Compression, a range of additional compression features such as OLTP Compression, SecureFiles Compression, RMAN Compression, Data Guard Network Compression and Data Pump Compression. This means that database compression can be used not only with Warehouse applications but also applications with mixed workloads and OLTP applications. Advanced Compression also provides effective support for unstructured data in the shape of SecureFiles Compression, for example in typical content management or XML applications. The potential for optimization offered by Oracle Index Key Compression was exactly what we were looking for and it fitted in perfectly with National Foods ongoing efforts to increase efficiency. 64 62 ORACLE TO ORACLE ONLINE AT CARL ZEISS MIGRATION SAP platform migration completed over one weekend Carl Zeiss is one of the world s leading optical and opto-electronic firms, with a workforce numbering more than 24,000. IT infrastructure is of great importance for such an innovative company with such a global reach. When the company decided to outsource to Siemens IT Solutions and Services, one of its main concerns was an optimum SAP migration process. Carl Zeiss set aside one weekend for the downtime of the key SAP platform for the markets (EMEA, USA and APAC). System stability and reliability also needed to be ensured after migration. Oracle addressed both these concerns with its latest Triple-O online migration technology. The project Carl Zeiss uses SAP ECC 6.0 with SAP Net- Weaver 7.0 and Oracle Database 10g Release 2 ( ). The largest platform covered in this article is based on a 2.5 TB database. If the traditional approach of SAP LOAD had been used to migrate this hefty database, it would have taken around 40 hours to transfer the data alone. The subsequent interface adaptations and other follow-up work required would have made the original requirement of migrating over one weekend impossible. This migration project included various challenges: Migration of a database of this size, including interface adaptions and corrections, over one weekend Large number of interfaces (more than 200) Inclusion of EMEA, USA and APAC at the same time Oracle to Oracle Online migration (Triple-O) is a new technical way of carrying out large system migrations. This process enabled Carl Zeiss to migrate its global ERP system in just one weekend and without any noteworthy availability restrictions. Implementation The project was started in July and the actual cut over took place in mid-august. In order to satisfy the requirements of Carl Zeiss, Siemens IT Solutions and Services therefore used Oracle Triple-O for the migration. This is available for a wide range of system platforms (UNIX, Linux, Windows) which support SAP. Triple-O consists of two components: O2O Migration from the source to the target database is started at a defined time. Once complete, the new database is fully synchronized with the old one although only to the status at the start of migration. But since operations have continued during the migration, there is a delta which is usually very small in terms of the volume of data concerned compared with the actual size of the database. This final update for the new target database is undertaken online using the Triple-O component. To do this, Triple-O records all the changes which occur during O2O migration in the source database.

Oracle Online Migration at Carl Zeiss 63 Once the migration is completed with O2O and the IT operation has been closed for the migration as planned the database changes recorded are then updated in the target database. It is estimated that this will take around 30 minutes, freeing up a lot of time for interface adaptations, corrections, tests and the decision to go live. A SAP target system was produced. The source system was migrated into this. The corrections expected during a migration at basic SAP level and interface adaptations then had to be undertaken. To ensure a successful migration, the actual process was tested twice with the assistance of Carl Zeiss experts; once as part of a test migration to the future target system and once to the new test management system. Everyone involved in the project was therefore fully prepared when the actual migration started as planned on Friday. The final posting date was 9 pm. The system was powered down. And it was soon made available again for testing. Synchronization took 30 minutes. The financial and compliance checks and user acceptance tests required in the APAC, Americas and EMEA regions were then undertaken. Quote from Siemens Oracle to Oracle Online migration (Triple-O) is an innovative further development of O2O which allowed us to move several hours of weekend work forward in the week for this project. Reorganization of the database environment Database upgrades RAC implementations Installation of new and more powerful system platforms Realization of new storage solutions Oracle Triple-O offers efficient functions for ensuring the transfer of data from source to target system and uses the Golden Gate component for data synchronization. The Oracle migration can be interrupted at any time. The actual production platform is not restricted in any way at any time. Oracle Triple-O is SAP-certified. For more information, please consult SAP Note or go to Just before midnight on Saturday, the team decided to go live. Technological platform: Oracle Triple-O The new Oracle Triple-O online migration technology is recommended when undertaking a whole host of recurring requirements in data centers: Migration of large Oracle database environments to new system platforms in short periods of time

64 ORACLE REAL APPLICATION CLUSTERS (RAC) FOR SAP AND IBM POWER SYSTEMS: THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR 24/7 OPERATIONS Bauerfeind AG Bauerfeind AG, a leading German manufacturer of medical aids, needs to manage data volumes of currently 2.8 TB for production systems such as SAP ERP and SAP CRM, and 2.6 TB for the SAP NetWeaver BW system. A further 0.5 TB is required for other systems that are integrated with the SAP environment. In 2002, the company began designing a modern, centralized; corporate-wide business management strategy based on SAP Business Suite, and initiated a five year project program to implement the solution. In the course of this project, it was necessary to replace legacy systems like Brain AS and MAS 90, and build a completely new network infrastructure as well as a new centralized storage solution. This solution had to be scalable to meet the needs of the company as it continued to grow. Very early in the project, Bauerfeind decided to run the databases for the SAP environment in an active-active configuration using multiple nodes in an Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) on IBM Power Systems servers with a Unix OS. Replacing its legacy systems with a companywide deployment of SAP Business Suite, new IBM Power Systems and IBM System Storage infrastructure enables the SAP environment to be managed in a flexible, dynamic manner. The administration and SAP operation was simplified considerably by using IBM GPFS (Global Parallel File System). For the resulting infrastructure at Bauerfeind, GPFS is the required clustered file system for SAP environments running on the AIX operating system to enable the Oracle RAC nodes to access the same database tables simultaneously. GPFS also enables Bauerfeind to provision SAP systems on different Power servers or LPARs rapidly and flexibly. This landscape delivers excellent price-performance, as demonstrated by a VMS benchmark. Customer Benefits around the clock The continuous availability of business applications around the clock is crucial for Bauerfeind. The window for planned downtime is extremely narrow, because the company has international subsidiaries in nine time zones, and users need access to the SAP systems 24 hours 7 days a week. This factor was a major influence on platform selection and architecture from the beginning of the project. In total, people (approximately 50 percent of the 1,100 licensed SAP users) are concurrent users of the SAP ERP system. Additionally, there are many specialized users of other SAP applications such as SAP CRM and SAP NetWeaver BW. Another important contribution to the total load on the infrastructure is made by the approximately 2,000 simultaneous B2B users. By integrating professional users (suppliers of medical equipment, pharmacies, and medical practices) online into the SAP ecommerce system, Bauerfeind can offer a rapid and efficient ordering process, with delivery within 24 hours.

SAP on RAC at Bauerfeind 65 Additional SAP users can be integrated seamlessly as the company grows with low administrative effort and operational costs, fewer peripherals and a significantly reduced network complexity. Oracle Real Application Clusters provides high availability for database servers. If an SAP application server detects a fault, GPFS enables rapid re-provisioning. PowerVM virtualization provides high average system utilization while maintaining constant response times. The IT team can serve many more systems and users without increasing their headcount by a high degree of standardization in both the SAP environment and IT infrastructure. Additionally, to ensure a flexible and dynamic infrastructure that would facilitate functional extensions and scale to support corporate growth, Bauerfeind nominated server virtualization as another prerequisite for the global SAP roll-out. The SAP environment not only serves users at the company headquarter in Zeulenroda, Germany; it also serves many of the foreign subsidiaries remotely via VPN connections. These VPNs use fully redundant WAN network connections from several different providers, and can also use ISDN dial-up connections as a standby in case the WAN fails. Bauerfeind uses SAP Dispatcher to manage initial load-balancing at log-on in between the dialogue instances on the blades. To guarantee efficient utilization of capacity on the Oracle RAC database nodes, SAP users are grouped into logon groups according to the main applications that they use. These groups then primarily access tables on one or other of the two RAC nodes. The databases for the large SAP production systems run on IBM Power 570 servers in an active-active cluster configuration. One reason for using Oracle RAC is to enable horizontal scaling by adding additional nodes to handle Virtualization parameters for SAP Business Suite growing workload. If one of the two database nodes suffers a failure, the other can take over the whole workload, preserving 50 percent of the database server throughput and keeping systems online until the broken node can be repaired. SAP Central Services for ABAP systems (ASCS) are also moved to the remaining node using the Oracle SAPCTL utility, eliminating this single point of failure. Meeting Availability Requirements To meet the availability requirements, Bauerfeind opted for a cluster solution on the database level. This was put into practice with an Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) and connected Oracle Clusterware. The underlying topology was designed with full redundancy for every single point of failure, and the cluster nodes were distributed between two separate locations on the Bauerfeind campus for disaster recovery reasons. Additionally, there is a third quorum data centre where dedicated servers and disks are installed as tie-breaker nodes.

66 About Bauerfeind AG Bauerfeind AG is a specialist manufacturer of medical aids, such as supports, orthoses, compression stockings and foot orthoses. Headquartered in Zeulenroda, Germany, the company employs around 2,000 staff. In addition to its manufacturing facilities, the company also runs the Bauerfeind Innovation Centre, which works with scientists, medical practitioners and retailers to research and develop new products, and the Bauerfeind Academy, which provides training about the company s products. SAP landscape combining horizontal and vertical scaling This is important for very fast-reacting clusters to rule out so-called split-brain situations. A split-brain situation occurs when the network connection or the heartbeat between the two active data centres is interrupted. In this situation, each of the independent GPFS and RAC nodes attempts to take over the entire SAP system, because the cluster software assumes that there has been a complete breakdown of the other nodes. Thus, a group of users would remain active on node A, while a second group remains active on node B, both of which would be running the same SAP instance. Starting in 1984 Bauerfeind established other locations in Europe, the US and Asia. The company s owner, Professor Bauerfeind, realized that the business needed to renew its corporate organization structure in order to adapt successfully to future business requirements. At the heart of his renewal strategy was the concept of centralization, combined with the incorporation of a joint stock company. Business processes were reorganized to provide a consistent and standardized corporate approach for the whole company. The transactions that the two groups of users would perform might then lead to inconsistencies in the SAP database, leading to data corruption and making it impossible to manage business processes correctly. To avoid this situation, the tie-breaker node is used, the cluster site accessing and reserving this disks first becomes primary, and leads during data resynchronization.

SAP Application servers are allocated to customer SAP systems based on the number of SAP users. These application servers are also distributed between both data centers so that at least half the Application Servers will still be available in the case where one of the data centers becomes inoperable. Freudenberg IT does not charge extra when additional application servers are required to maintain agreed upon service levels. Freudenberg IT is responsible for all LAN lines within each data center. WAN lines into each data center can either be dedicated to each customer or shared (i.e. Freudenberg IT Internet Lines using SONET with multiple path redundancy) using VPN access. The choice of network security concept, communication line carrier, data line type, bandwidth, associated network devices, the backup data line method, and actual location of the WAN entry point (the customer s location(s) and/or a Freudenberg IT data center) is mutually agreed upon between the customer and Freudenberg IT and is defined in the hosting contract service levels. 80 78 High Availability/Backup Concepts Unavailability of the SAP system leads to catastrophic problems for most customers, both logistically and financially. In order to minimize the risk of unplanned downtime in a mission critical environment, IT organizations must pro actively plan for failover and recoverability. Oracle database products enable different approaches, such as hardware clusters, mirror technologies, standby databases, RAC and Data Guard. Oracle Advanced Customer Services can advise on the comparative advantages and disadvantages of these different approaches as it applies to your particular situation and, of course, assist with the implementation of the chosen solution. Oracle RAC Enablement for SAP The Real Application Clusters (RAC) option enables the distribution of your database instance across different servers, or nodes. This offers new possibilities in the area of high availability of an Oracle database system, and also provides greater flexibility in the dimensioning and scalability of system resources. Oracle Advanced Customer Services provides professional services, in the areas of planning, technical workshops and implementation, to assist you with enabling RAC for your SAP environments. Database Migration Services for SAP The majority of all SAP ERP installations run on an Oracle database. The Oracle Advanced Customer Services for SAP group is certified by SAP for database migrations and can assist companies who wish to migrate their SAP Business Suite installation from a non-oracle database to Oracle. A much valued aspect of Oracle s migration services is the deep familiarity of the change from a DBA perspective. Oracle Advanced Customer Services can assist your staff in executing a migration plan while familiarizing them with the new database operations. O2O Transition Services Extremely Quick Database Reorganizations and Transitions for SAP Systems Oracle is the number 1 database provider in the SAP ERP and SAP BW market space. To provide our Oracle DB SAP customers with the best possible support, Oracle has created a service program that gives customers a broad range of services from which to choose. We have expanded this program to include special services in the areas of Heterogeneous Database Migrations and Database Reorganizations. O2O Transition Services The O2O (Oracle-To-Oracle) Transition Services Set has been created by the Oracle Support and Solution Center SAP in Walldorf, Germany, to meet the growing challenges encountered by our customers with regard to availability. Using this service set, it is possible to execute trouble-free hardware migrations and to perform partial or complete database reorganizations without risk to the production environment. This method supports all operating systems on which at least Oracle is installed, and it is fully hardware-independent. Heterogeneous Database Migrations The O2O Services Set offers our Oracle customers a faster and more reliable method for changing hardware platforms, migrating even very large SAP systems greater than 2TB, during the span of one weekend, (very highthroughput, average of data load >500GB/h). Even systems that were not feasible previously can now be considered as strategic options. Systems that have been migrated in this way are fully supported by SAP upon completion. Database Reorganizations The services set can also be used to reorganize databases. A comprehensive zero risk strategy for the production environment is also pursued in this approach. The reorganization can be performed on the entire database or on individual table spaces.

Oracle Advanced Customer Services (ACS) for SAP 79 O2O Features Overview The O2O Service, is delivered globally by the Oracle Database for SAP Support Services team, has been used for over four years in hundreds of SAP and non-sap migrations worldwide. Many features have been added since its initial development to support a wider range of different database systems and configurations as well as different migration scenarios (migrations over WLAN). Key features of O2O include: Runs on all UNIX, Linux and Windows operating systems. Cross database migration possible Automated scheduling software to make the migration easier Changing database user names including. SAP schema name Migration to SAP single tablespace layout Creating an individual tablespace layout, also for legacy databases Moving selected tables and indexes to individual tablespaces (defined in an Input-File) Excluding selected database users from migration (defined in an Input-File) Copying table structure only for selected tables, e.g. create size reduces database copies Resumable Transaction per Default (Job freeze 24h) All options can be combined in any order. The needed tablespace sizes on the target system are calculated automatically Parallel copy method for large tables Import of external scripts to create customized migration scripts (partitioning) Simple LIST partitioning based on the column MANDT possible IOT-Support Enhanced partitioning support (sub partitioning, Global, Global partitioned and local indexes) Support for DataPump export/import for tables having LOB or Long Raw data types Supports table sorting during migration Index compression on target system (10g) Table compression for Oracle Database 11g Enhanced migration checks based on row counts on each table in source and target system Special Features Optimization of the file system layout Ability to update systems in existence for a long time to state-of-the-art status (LMTS, ASSM) Complete database reorganization Minimization of database size Zero risk strategy for the production environment Maximization of system availability Conversion speeds of >500GB/h possible Oracle to Oracle ONLINE (Triple-O) Oracle Support and Service Team for SAP in Walldorf (Germany) has developed a new online migration process which allows users to migrate their: operating system hardware platform or even database release with a very short SAP system downtime of just a few minutes. This ACS online database transaction process is called Triple-O and based on Oracle GoldenGate. Oracle GoldenGate is a comprehensive software package for enabling the replication of data in heterogeneous data environments. The product set enables high availability solutions, real-time data integration, transactional change data capture, data replication, transformations, and verification between operational and analytical enterprise systems. Oracle to Oracle Online (Triple O) helps to reduce the downtime needed for the migration significantly. As part of the O2O Online migration you can: Perform cross platform migrations on OS level. You can migrate the system between all operating systems supported by SAP ERP, SAP BW, CRM and XI based on an Oracle database of any size. So any combination of UNIX, Linux and Windows on source and target system is supported. DATABASE 11 g

80 Oracle Advanced Customer Services (ACS) for SAP DATABASE 11 g The database can be upgraded during the migration. With this release a direct upgrade to Oracle 11.2 during the migration is possible. Useful for: Database reorganizations Database upgrades RAC implementation New Hardware Implementation New Storage System Implementation of new Database Features Table compression (Advanced Compression) Index compression Partitioning Automatic Storage Management ASM TDE/Security The solution has been certified by SAP and is available. The Oracle Support and Services for SAP team will be happy to assist. For more information, please consult the SAP Note: Oracle Partitioning for SAP Customers Oracle Partitioning is an option to Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition (also along with Oracle Database 11g certification). At a technical level, Oracle Partitioning allows tables and indexes within a database to be subdivided into smaller pieces. Oracle can partition a table by ranges of values, so for example, the data for Jan 1, 2010 through Jan 31, 2010 can reside in its own partition. Oracle can also partition a table by a list of values, so, for example, North American data is in one partition, while the European data is in another partition. Partitioning is a critical feature for managing large databases. Partitioning is the feature that allows a database to scale for very large datasets while maintaining consistent performance, without an unduly increased need for hardware resources or administrative efforts. Oracle Partitioning is embedded into the core database engine and supported by Oracle s administrative tools. From a SAP application perspective, partitioning is completely transparent. Thus, no changes need to be made to the application or to the SQL statements in order to use partitioning. Partitioning for SAP has been supported since SAP Release 4.6C (see SAP Note ) for the SAP Kernel Oracle Database 11g With the many new capabilities and enhancements of Oracle Database 11g, such as Advanced Compression, DirectNFS, Secure-files and Online Patching, enthusiasm and advanced demand continues to build for fast deployment. In addition, Database Vault is certified by SAP for supportability. Advanced Customer Services stands ready to advise and assist SAP users in efficiently and smoothly upgrading to Oracle Database 11g in line with SAP supportability requirements. Technical workshops are in development to help your IT staff become aware and comfortable in deploying and supporting the many features of Oracle Database 11g. Whether through our ongoing support and partnership with SAP, or directly with your IT organization, Oracle Advanced Customer Services deliver personalized services with deep experience operating with SAP applications.
