3 The Challenge Making complex data understandable and useful for a variety of users Developing products which allow totally different types of users access to data in a usable format

4 Our Solution Develop two different applications from the same data using ArcGIS KMZ Clients (Google Earth, ArcGIS Explorer) for low level users ArcGIS Server for high level users

5 Hadar Geoinformatics Project The Hadar Geoinformatics Project (HGP) is designed to merge disparate datasets into a geodatabase to support paleoanthropological research, education, and antiquities conservation in the greater Hadar region of Ethiopia. It is in the process of making more than three decades of data freely available to the public for scientific or education use via Google Earth and ArcGIS Server. Creating interfaces to share and allow manipulation of large databases is exceptionally rare in paleoanthropology. The HGP is funded by the Late Lessons from Early History initiative at Arizona State University.

6 HGP Data Majority of geographic data contained in an Access Database Three different sets of aerial imagery were in stored in folders There are two main types of data that are mapped and queried, but the information for all the data are in many different tables in Access: Localities Places where fossils have been found Approximately 2,000 points Fossils Fossils Approximately 10,000 fossils occur at the 2,000 localities Only faunal remains for this project

11 Low Level Application Behind the Scenes Prepping Data Processed Access database to come up with locality points and summary information for each locality (e.g. total fossils at each locality) Created Python scripts and a model to automate shapefile creation since the data updates every 6 months

14 Low Level Application Behind the Scenes Viewing Data Did some Arc2Earth post processing Created separate legend file and overwrote the one created by Arc2Earth Cached 2 sets of client aerial imagery using ArcGIS Server Reprojected to WGS84 and then tiled. 17 Low Level Application Behind the Scenes Challenges Arc2Earth Takes some trial and error to figure out The amount of work it takes to change each of the data layer properties before you export to kmz and the post processing makes this process unsustainable if your data changes often GREAT support team
