4 INTRODUCTION WHY IS A HIGH QUALITY OF MASTER DATA IMPORTANT? Master data is key to managing complexity in worldwide Travel Retail. High quality of master data enables us together as partners to improve efficiency of the supply chain and ensures that cost, manual work and mistakes can be reduced. A high quality is accomplished with comprehensive, current and trustworthy product information including basic data and digital assets. Today s Omni Channel consumers have an ever increasing demand to buy in a most convenient way and expect to access all product information across all channels. Reliable information and a shopping experience are prerequisite for a purchase decision. If the product information is not available across all channels, the consumer will not purchase, share or recommend a product. Therefore complete master data information is the basis for all our global processes, online and in store. A high quality of master data is necessary to ensure the shopping experience for our mutual consumers. This allows increasing growth because better information leads to buying decisions of the consumers around the world. WHY DOES GEBR. HEINEMANN REQUIRE YOUR MASTER DATA IN A DATA POOL? A single point of truth secures data integrity during the whole product lifecycle for all participating partners worldwide. This is the fundament to evolve and manage master data to be able to respond to changing needs in a digital world and global Omni Channel business. Additionally a data pool enables efficient data synchronisation with less manual work resulting in less mistakes regarding article information and in minimisation of the risk of wrong orders and out of stocks. This is the premise to improve sales and services towards our mutual customers and consumers. In addition, Gebr. Heinemann will require high master data quality for the future EDI connections (orders, ordrsp, desadv, invoice). 1

5 INTRODUCTION WHICH DATA SHOULD BE SHARED? Through the activity of the Travel Retail Data Innovation Group, a global Travel Retail Data Dictionary and Playlist are defined for every category in the data pool. The required attributes and digital assets depend on the product categories. It will be necessary to enter all relevant product master data into the data pool. Please contact any of the contact persons to receive the needed information. WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF THE DATA POOL? With the data pool, a global standard is defined and can be used as the single point of truth. It ensures consistent and complete data for every supplier, retailer and customer. Data will be automatically synchronised in the data pool and will be available for all customers at once instead of sharing the data with each customer one by one. Manual effort and mistakes will be minimised and changes of product information will automatically be updated in every retailer system. Consistent and complete data from every supplier increases visibility of products for customers and consumers in our Omni Channel business. Through the possibility of linking predecessors to new products, product lifecycle changes are accelerated. 2

Heinemann initiated the Travel Retail Data Innovation Group (TRDIG) with the following vision: Defining a standard for the global master data exchange in Travel Retail with the highest possible degree of automation. We want to accomplish this vision with the data pool as a sustainable technological platform worldwide. Since the Domestic Market is using a GDSN data pool for approximately 15 years, this will be the base for this platform. Thus, synergies can be generated and all participants will be able to support their global Omni Channel business. All partners in this Group will save time, cost and effort by using a GDSN data pool. This community is not owned by any of the partners but rather the community is supposed to develop and evolve the standards used in the GDSN worldwide. GEBR. 7 INTRODUCTION TO THE DATA POOL The Global Data Synchronisation Network (GDSN) is a network of interoperable data pools enabling collaborating users to securely synchronise master data based on GS1 standards ( All participants can exchange consistent and continuously updated master data via the Travel Retail data pool. Participants can be Retailer and Distributor from the Travel Retail Market, the Domestic Market or even consumers who require further product information in their language. 11 REQUIREMENTS A GLOBAL EXPERT We learned that in every company there is a global Head of Marketing, Head of Purchasing, Head of Human Resources, but often the topic Master Data Management is handled locally. We do need a contact person from your company responsible for Master Data Management worldwide to achieve the best result in the future of master data exchange. A UNIQUE GLOBAL TRADE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER (GTIN) It is required to follow the GS1 rules and definition. A GTIN uniqueness is important for the communication regarding the product information via the data pool. The GS1 definition of a GTIN is as follows: A GTIN is a number that uniquely identifies a product. You see them beneath the barcodes on almost every product in the world. Which is why they re often called barcode numbers. In Europe, they re usually 13 digits long, in the US 12. You might see shorter 8 digit numbers, used on smaller products. The same numbers are used to identify products sold online, too. The important thing to know is that they are all licensed from GS1 organisations around the world to guarantee their uniqueness.
