16 The key functions of the DC-NDL: 1. Representing the yomi (reading) of the Japanese language : for accommodating certain unique features of the Japanese language 2. Connectivity with Linked Data : for maintaining the broad perspective of linking to the world's data 3. Compatibility with digitized materials : for accommodating NDL activities 16

17 3.1. Representing reading of Japanese language 17

18 Japanese language has three distinct types of characters : hiragana : katakana : kanji All of these words are read as "i-chi-go (strawberry) 18

19 Some words have several different readings su-i-ka (watermelon) ni-shi-u-ri Watermelon in Japanese could be read as either "su-i-ka" or "ni-shi-u-ri" 19

20 Reading varies depending upon meaning ga-ku hi-ta-i The word could be read as either ga-ku or hi-ta-i 20

21 : ga-ku (frame) : hi-ta-i (forehead) 21

22 Without spaces inserted between words, it is difficult to understand meaning 22
