9th Meeting of the Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) of the Global Water System (GWSP) 19 October 2011 Xi an, China SSC-9-II-3. Future of GWSP products Digital Water Atlas (DWA) Eva Flinkerbusch/Marcel Endejan
Structure 1. Status 2. Areas of improvement 3. The way forward
Ultimate Goal (Recap) The purpose and intent of the Digital Water Atlas is to describe basic elements the interlinkages of the elements and changes in the state of the Global Water System by creating a consistent set of annotated maps.
1. DWA Status 69 global maps 141 web links to other info/data sources > 170,000 map visits > 5000 registered users from ~45 countries > 5800 dataset downloads Last update of maps: March 2011 (GRanD) NEW!
1. DWA Status GRanD is number 2 of the most downloaded maps Top 10 Dataset downloads
Top 10 Maps 1. DWA Status
2. Areas of improvement Room for improvement in 4 areas 1. Content 2. Functionality 3. Cooperation 4. Hard- & Software
2. Areas of improvement 1. Content -Review descriptions (spelling) -Include new and updated maps/datasets (including scenarios for the future) -Include series of datasets (e.g. a pack of 12 datasets representing monthly mean values of precipitation) -Include some animated images (e.g. one that depicts the increase of dams) -Review and add further links -Include (links to) related publications -Include a section about the models used to produce the maps (e.g. WaterGAP) -Include a section that describes the main global change scenarios / storylines (e.g. the SRES scenarios)
2. Areas of improvement 1. 10 2. Areas of improvement 2. Functionality -Include Web2.0 functions (e.g. to allow discussions) 3. Cooperation -Contact potential cooperation partners -Define a process for users to provide new maps 4. Hardware & Software -Update server software (using open-source software and a virtual server concept) [almost done using VMWare, Ubuntu Linux, Joomla CMS, GeoServer; interactive map section and new GWSP Design still need to be integrated properly] -Move server to another hardware [under preparation]

3. The way forward changing the entire software to open source software (will make future updates affordable) moving the whole system into a virtual machine (so that later-on it can be run from any new server without major hard-software configuration needs) This we are doing in view of a soon end of the International Project Office (IPO) of the Global Water System Project (GWSP)
3. The way forward Thinking of an institution to hand over long-term legacy of the DWA Options (which country, which institution...)...?
3. The way forward The Global Water Portal (GWP) A service-oriented web portal linking global water data Bundesanstalt für Gewässerkunde (Federal Institute of Hydrology) KOBLENZ, GERMANY
