8 Preface The Metadata Manager User Guide provides information about how to browse and search metadata in the Metadata Manager warehouse, view and edit metadata, run data lineage analysis, share metadata, and run reports. This guide is written for business analysts who use Metadata Manager and the business glossary for metadata management and analysis. Metadata Manager helps you understand and manage how information and processes are derived. It also helps you understand the fundamental relationships between information and processes, and how they are used. Metadata Manager extracts metadata from application, business intelligence, data integration, data modeling, and relational metadata sources. Metadata Manager uses PowerCenter workflows to extract metadata from metadata sources and load it into a centralized metadata warehouse called the Metadata Manager warehouse. Metadata Manager uses resources to represent the metadata in the Metadata Manager warehouse. Each resource represents metadata from a metadata source. Metadata Manager shows the metadata for each resource in the metadata catalog. The metadata catalog is a hierarchical representation of the metadata in the Metadata Manager warehouse. You can use the Browse tab in Metadata Manager to complete the following tasks: Browse metadata in the metadata catalog. View resource, metadata object, and business term details. 12 Metadata Manager Interface The Metadata Manager interface consists of the following tabs: Browse. Browse and search the metadata catalog, manage business glossaries, and run data lineage analysis. Model. Create and edit custom models, add custom attributes to packaged and custom models, and import and export custom models. Load. Create and load resources to load metadata into the Metadata Manager warehouse. Use the Load tab to monitor and schedule resource loads, purge metadata from the Metadata Manager warehouse, and manage the search index. Permissions. Manage permissions on resources and metadata objects in the Metadata Manager warehouse. Browse Tab The Browse tab has the following components: Actions menu. Use the Actions menu to and export metadata objects, business terms, and data lineage, and to configure metadata catalog and metadata object properties shown in the Details panel. Shortcuts view. Create and manage shortcuts, folders, and shared folders. Catalog view. View the resources and metadata objects in the metadata catalog. Glossary view. Create, edit, and view business terms and categories for business glossaries. Details panel. View details about metadata objects in the metadata catalog and categories and business terms in a business glossary. Includes tabbed browsing to view object details and run multiple data lineage analyses simultaneously. Note: If you change the default font size in Microsoft Internet Explorer, Metadata Manager does not refresh the application. You must refresh the browser after changing the font size. Metadata Manager Browse Tab Tasks Use the Browse tab to browse, search, analyze, and share metadata in the metadata catalog. You can also run reports on the metadata in the Metadata Manager repository. Browse Metadata Objects and View Properties You can use Catalog and Glossary views to browse the resource metadata in the Metadata Manager warehouse. Select metadata objects and view the properties for the metadata objects in the Details panel Use the Details panel to view information about metadata objects, including metadata object properties, related catalog objects, comments, links, business terms, impact summary, and profiling information. In Metadata Manager, shortcuts are pointers to metadata objects in the metadata catalog. Use the Shortcuts view to create and manage shortcuts to objects in the catalog, create and manage folders to store shortcuts, share folders with other users, and manage saved searches. Metadata Manager can show data lineage for objects in the Metadata Manager warehouse. Data lineage describes the path through which data flows. You can analyze the flow of data and troubleshoot transformation errors in metadata sources. You can view object details and relationships between objects in the metadata catalog and business glossary. You can run data lineage analysis on metadata objects in the metadata catalog and business terms in a business glossary. When you navigate the data lineage diagram, you can expand, collapse, and highlight objects, and open the lineage analysis in a new window. RELATED TOPICS: Sharing Metadata on page 44 Run Metadata Manager Reports To run Metadata Manager reports, you must create a Reporting Service in the Informatica domain that contains the Metadata Manager Service. When you log in to Metadata Manager, it creates a cookie. You can change your password after you log in. To log in to Metadata Manager: 1. Open Microsoft Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. 2. In the Address field, enter the following URL for the Metadata Manager login page: http(s)://<host>:<port>/mm In the URL, <host>:<port> represents the host name and port number of the machine that runs the Metadata Manager application. If the node is configured for HTTPS with a keystore that uses a self-signed certificate, a warning message appears. To enter the site, accept the certificate. The Informatica Metadata Manager and Business Glossary login page appears. 3. Enter the user name and password. 4. Select Native or the name of a specific security domain. The Security Domain field appears when the Informatica domain contains an LDAP security domain. If you do not know the security domain that your user account belongs to, contact the Informatica domain administrator. 5. Click Login. 6. If this is the first time you log in with the user name and password provided by the Informatica domain administrator, change your password to maintain security. Cookies Note: If you access Metadata Manager from Informatica Administrator, you log in to Metadata Manager with the user name and password you used to log in to Informatica Administrator. When you log in to Metadata Manager, the PowerCenter Service Manager creates a cookie that it uses to authenticate your user name in Metadata Manager. If you access Metadata Manager again before the cookie expires, the Service Manager uses the authentication information in the cookie to log you in to Metadata Manager. You must have cookies enabled in your browser for the Service Manager to create the cookie. If the browser session is inactive for 12 hours or you log out of Metadata Manager, the Service Manager deletes the cookie. You can increase the timeout for the cookie in the Metadata Manager imm.properties file by setting the Session.timeOut property to a value from 30 through 43,200 minutes. Changing a Password To change your password: 1. Click Manage > Account Settings in Metadata Manager. The Account Settings window appears. 2. Enter the old password. Passwords can be up to 80 characters. Logging In to Metadata Manager 5

The metadata catalog contains all resource metadata in the Metadata Manager warehouse. Glossary view. View business glossaries, categories, and business terms. Details panel. View metadata object properties, related catalog objects, links, related terms,comments, and impact summary. You can also view profiling information. Working with the Metadata Catalog The metadata catalog is a hierarchical view of the metadata in the Metadata Manager warehouse. Use the metadata catalog in the Catalog view to browse the metadata in the Metadata Manager warehouse. You can select a metadata object to view more details about the object in the Details panel. The metadata catalog contains the following types of objects: Resources. Resources represent metadata sources in Metadata Manager. All metadata extracted from a metadata source and loaded into the Metadata Manager warehouse appear under the resource in the metadata catalog. Includes custom resources and packaged resources loaded into the Metadata Manager warehouse. Logical groups. Logical groups of metadata object types. Logical groups can appear at multiple levels of the hierarchy, based on the structure of the model for the resource. For example, a Tables logical group comprises a group of all metadata objects with a Table object type. Metadata. Metadata objects for a resource. Metadata objects are extracted from the metadata source using the model for the resource type. You can expand and collapse the resource hierarchies in the metadata catalog to view metadata for the resources in the metadata catalog. If you select an individual metadata object that has no child objects, the details for the 7

17 object appear in the Details panel. If you select a metadata object or group that contains child objects, the hierarchy for the object or group appears in the Details panel. By default, Metadata Manager displays 100 child objects for a parent object. You can configure the number of child objects displayed for any parent object in Informatica Administrator. Configuring Preferences You can customize the resources and metadata object types that appear in the metadata catalog. Configure preferences to select resources in the Metadata Manager warehouse and the corresponding object types that you want to view. After you configure preferences, Metadata Manager updates the Catalog view to reflect the changes. You can also configure preferences for the object types that appear in the Details panel when you search for metadata. The preferences you configure for resources and object types also determine the resources and metadata objects that Metadata Manager exports to an Excel file when you export object attributes. For more information about exporting and importing attributes to an Excel file, see the Metadata Manager Custom Metadata Integration Guide. To configure catalog preferences: 1. On the Browse tab, click Manage > Browse and Search Preferences. The Catalog and Business Glossary tab for the Preferences window appears. 2. 20 For example, multiple reports in a business intelligence tool use a table in an Oracle database. A column is added to the table. You can view the impact summary of the Oracle table to find the list of business intelligence reports that may be impacted by this change. The impact summary for a metadata object displays the following details: Impact Summary Downstream. Lists all downstream business intelligence reports, relational database tables, relational database synonyms, PowerCenter mappings, and business terms. Changes to the selected metadata object impact these objects. Impact Summary Upstream. Lists all upstream business intelligence reports, relational database tables, relational database synonyms, PowerCenter mappings, and business terms. Changes to these objects impact the selected metadata object. Click an impacted object name to view the details of the metadata object or business term in the Browse tab. To refresh the impact summary, click Actions > Refresh. When you export a metadata object, you can choose to export the impact summary. Objects that refer to many other objects may decrease performance when you open the impact summary details. Close the impact summary details when you are not viewing the impact summary. To view additional details about how a metadata change may affect other metadata objects, run data lineage analysis. Note: Metadata Manager analyzes and finds impacted objects when you load PowerCenter resources. If a PowerCenter resource load fails, then metadata objects in resources connected to the failed PowerCenter resource may have incorrect information in the impact summary. To view accurate information, ensure that all connected PowerCenter resources have successfully loaded. Differences Between Impact Summary and Data Lineage When you view the impact summary on a custom object or a packaged metadata object or business term related to a custom object, you may see the following differences from the data lineage diagram: A custom object can be related to other objects as both a structure and a field. The impact summary treats such custom objects as a structure or a field, depending on how the custom object is related to the object for which you are viewing the impact summary. Data lineage treats such custom objects as both a structure and a field. For example, a custom object is related to a relational database column as a structure and related to a relational database table as a field. The impact summary for the column displays the relationship to the custom object only. The data lineage diagram for the column displays the relationship to the custom object and the custom object's relationship to the upstream relational database table. If a custom object is defined as a structure container and is related to another object as a structure, the impact summary for the related object does not display all of the custom object's child elements. Data lineage for the related object does display all of the custom object's child elements. If an object is related to a custom object as a structure, the impact summary for a field contained in that structure displays the object related to the custom object. Data lineage displays only the field and does not display the object related to the custom object. Viewing Profiling Information You can view profiling data on tables and columns for database management resource types. When you load metadata for a resource, Metadata Manager extracts profiling data about metadata objects and stores it in the Metadata Manager warehouse. Use the profiling information to analyze the content, quality, and the structure of source data. Viewing Metadata Details 11

21 You can view table and column profiling data for the following resources: IBM DB2 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows Informix Microsoft SQL Server Netezza Oracle Sybase ASE Teradata You can configure a database management resource to extract profiling information from the source database. After the resource is loaded into the Metadata Manager warehouse, you can view the profiling results. You view the profiling information in the Profile view of the Browse tab for a metadata object. The information in the Profile view depends on the type of metadata object for which you view profiling information. Note: Metadata Manager uses random sampling to compile data profiling results. Metadata Manager does not profile all columns for a table or all rows for a column. To view metadata object profiling information: 1. Select a metadata object in the Catalog view or search results. 2. In the Details panel, click Actions > View > Profile. Table Profiles Table profiles include the following information: Field characteristics. Characteristics of the columns in the table. Candidate key evaluation. Number and percentage of unique values for one or more columns in a source. Use this information to determine the column in a source to use as a primary key. Column Profiles Column profiles include the following information: Domain inference. Infers a pattern that fits a column of data. Domain inference determines if the source values fit a list of values derived from the domain column values. Functional dependency. You can perform a search in the Search section. Metadata Manager displays the search results in a new tab. By default, Metadata Manager searches for metadata objects in the metadata catalog. It also searches for categories and business terms in all business glossaries. It also searches shortcuts, folders, and saved search queries that match the keyword. 23 Search Location You configure the location that Metadata Manager searches when you perform a keyword or advanced search. By default, Metadata Manager searches in all locations. You can configure the following locations to search: All. Search all objects in the Catalog, Glossary, and Shortcuts views. Catalog. Search all metadata objects in the metadata catalog. Shortcuts. Search shortcuts, folders, and saved search queries. Glossary. Search all categories and business terms in a business glossary. You can also browse for the location to search. Browse for a location if you want to search a specific hierarchy in the metadata catalog or business glossary or search a specific folder in the Shortcuts view. Configuring Search Preferences You can configure the object properties that appear in a search result. To configure search preferences: 1. On the Browse tab, click Manage > Browse and Search Preferences. The Preferences window appears. 2. On the Search tab, select the object properties that you want to appear in search results. 3. Click OK. Performing a Keyword Search Perform a keyword search to search all properties of objects that match the keyword. To perform a keyword search, select the search location and enter the search keyword. Metadata Manager searches for objects with properties that match the search criteria. You can use search operators and wildcard characters in a keyword search. For more complex search queries, perform an advanced search. To perform a keyword search: 1. On the toolbar, select the search location in the Search list. 2. If you select Browse, the Browse window appears. Select Catalog, Glossary, or Shortcuts in the Look in list, select a location in the navigator, and click OK. 3. Enter the keyword. 4. Click Go. 24 Understanding Keyword Search Results When you enter a keyword, Metadata Manager returns objects with properties that start with the keyword. Metadata Manager also returns objects that include the keyword when a space precedes the keyword. For example, you use the keyword res to search for object names in a catalog with the following objects: Resource Management Restore_CT Object_resources Object Restore Dress Mart The search returns the following results: Resource Management Restore_CT Object Restore Performing an Advanced Search Perform an advanced search to limit the object properties and object types that Metadata Manager searches. To perform an advanced search, select the search location, enter the search keyword, and select the object properties to search for. You can add multiple search conditions. Metadata Manager searches for objects with properties that match the search criteria. The following table describes the search properties you can configure to perform an advanced search: Property Location Object Type Audit Trail Date Description Location of the objects you want to search. Select one of the following options: - All - Shortcuts - Catalog - Glossary - Browse Default is All. Object type you want to search for. Metadata Manager includes all object types for all metadata sources you can load into the Metadata Manager warehouse or add to a business glossary. The object types available are based on the location you choose to search. Use AND or OR to search for multiple object properties or multiple object types. Optionally, select to search the historical values of object properties. Date the metadata object was created or last modified. Select Created or Last Modified and one of the following options: - Anytime. Search for all objects. - Within the last. Search for objects created or modified within a specific number of days, weeks, or months. - Since. Search for objects created or modified after a specific date. Use the calendar to select the date. - Between. Search for objects created or modified between two dates. Use the calendar to select the dates. Default values are Last Modified and anytime. Note: Metadata Manager does not extract the creation date for some metadata object types. For example, Oracle does not store creation date for tables.
