3 HA Overview HA Overview Databases and the Internet have enabled worldwide collaboration and information sharing, by extending the reach of database applications throughout organizations and communities. Small businesses and global enterprises alike have users all over the world requiring access to data 24- hours per day. Without this data access, operations can stop, and revenue is lost.

Increasingly, availability is measured in dollars, marks, yen and pounds, not just in time and convenience.

5 Availability Defined Availability Defined Availability is measured in the eyes of an application's end-user Availability is the degree to which an application or service is available when, and with the functionality, users expect. Performance failures due to higher than expected usage create the same havoc as the failure of critical components in the solution.

6 Availability Defined Availability Defined Highly available solutions have three basic characteristics - reliability, recoverability, and continuous operation. Reliability: Reliable solutions are made of components that seldom fail. Recoverability: In the event a component does fail, a highly available solution quickly recovers without human intervention. Continuous Operation: Highly available solutions continue to provide service, even during maintenance activities.
