7 SQL - DBCC CHECKDB Checks the logical and physical integrity of all the objects in the specified database. A full run of DBCC CHECKDB may take considerably longer to complete than earlier versions. This behavior occurs because: The logical checks are more comprehensive. Some of the underlying structures to be checked are more complex. Many new checks have been introduced to include the new features. By default, DBCC CHECKDB performs parallel checking of objects. The degree of parallelism is automatically determined by the query processor, but now the maximum degree of parallelism is configured just like parallel queries. A MAXDOP option has been added to DBCC CHECKDB to specify the degree of parallelism. MAXDOP overrides the max degree of parallelism configuration option of sp_configure for the statement. The MAXDOP can exceed the value configured with sp_configure. If MAXDOP exceeds the value configured with Resource Governor, the Database Engine uses the Resource Governor MAXDOP value.

Not enable by default There is a Stretch Database Advisor into SQL Server 2016 upgrade advisor to identify databases and tables for Stretch DB. Eligible data must be in historical data tables. After you enable Stretch Database for a local server instance, a database, and at least one table, it silently begins to migrate your historical data to an Azure SQL Database. You can pause data migration to troubleshoot problems on the local server or to maximize the available network bandwidth. There is no need to change anything at App level (SharePoint) to access to Stretch DBs. There is a small latency for remote queries. There are some limitations to use Stretch DB:

10 SQL - Always Encrypted Encrypt sensitive data inside client applications using encryption keys. Always Encrypted makes encryption transparent to applications. An Always Encrypted-enabled driver installed on the client computer achieves this by automatically encrypting and decrypting sensitive data in the client application. The driver encrypts the data in sensitive columns before passing the data to the Database Engine, and automatically rewrites queries so that the semantics to the application are preserved. Similarly, the driver transparently decrypts data, stored in encrypted database columns, contained in query results. There is an Always Encrypted Wizard available into SSMS to configure the feature. There are some limitations: Transparent Data Encryption has been enhanced with support for Intel AES-NI hardware acceleration of encryption. This will reduce the CPU overhead of turning on Transparent Data Encryption. The default encryption for endpoints is changed from RC4 to AES.

12 SQL - High Availability Load-balancing of read-intent connection requests is now supported across a set of read-only replicas instead of first available. The number of replicas that support automatic failover has been increased from two to three. Group Managed Service Accounts which provides a single identity solution for services running on a server farm, or on systems behind Network Load Balance, are now supported for AlwaysOn Failover Clusters. AlwaysOn Availability Groups supports distributed transactions and the Cross- Database Transactions (DTC) on Windows Server You can now configure AlwaysOn Availability Groups to failover when a database goes offline. AlwaysOn now supports encrypted databases.

14 SharePoint installation and features Standalone installation mode no longer available Single Server Farm mode still available, however SQL Server Express is no longer supported, now requires additional SQL Server Standard or Enterprise. BI: Excel services now is external from Office Online Server. BI: SQL Server 2014 Power Pivot and Power View add-ins for SharePoint cannot be deployed or used in SharePoint 2016, new versions will be available later.
