2 LaTeX Typesetting LaTeX is a computer program for typesetting journals, manuscripts, reports It is especially useful and convenient if you need to typeset mathematical equations in your writing. You can run LaTeX on any of SOE servers. You can also install it on your personal computer. 2

3 Installing LaTeX If you have a PC, ask your fellow senior students about free versions of LaTeX for PC. If you have a Mac, download MacTeX.pkg at uoregon.edu/koch/texshop/obtaining.html MacTeX.pkg is a large package (> 2GB) It should have everything you need. The front end (user interface) is called Texshop 3

6 Typesetting Figures and Tables Learn how to generate a plot in Matlab,, R, or Mathematica, export the plot as an eps file, include an eps figure in LaTeX, include a jpeg picture in LaTeX, typeset a list in LaTeX, typeset a table in LaTeX. 6

7 A Few Tips for Improving the Appearance of Figures Is the line width large enough? Is the symbol size large enough? Is the font size large enough? Is the xlabel present and meaningful? Is the ylabel present and meaningful? Is there a legend for distinguishing different curves? 7

9 Key Steps for a Good Writing 1. Make a list of items you want to describe / present 2. Describe each item clearly in as much detail as you can without worrying about the space 3. Anticipate potential questions and write to clarify/answer them (put yourself in your reader s s shoes) 4. Connect the items and make the writing coherent 5. Make the writing concise 6. Make the writing enjoyable to read 9

It is widely used in industries, in experimental labs and in course management. 11

14 A Bit More on How to Achieve a Good Writing Learn the subject and make it clear to yourself. Present what you learned to others in a clear way. Writing involves processing and reprocessing what you learned (that is why writing is hard!). Writing it out will improve your learning and your understanding of the subject! 14
