You can use InDesin to create compellin content, ta elements of the content for certain types of interactivity, and then export the document as a SMART Notebook file. You can then open the file in SMART Notebook collaborative learnin software to add more interactive elements to your document or present your material on a SMART Board interactive whiteboard. SMART Notebook publisher features The followin outlines some feature of SMART Notebook publisher. Creatin new documents You can use Adobe InDesin to create new documents optimized for SMART Notebook software. Renderin imaes and text as vector or raster You can export imae objects and text objects from InDesin in either vector or raster format. Exportin to SMART Notebook software You can export your document to SMART Notebook software with a sinle click of a button. 1

Showin or hidin tas You can show tas in InDesin to help you identify an object s export format and interactive features. You can hide the tas if they obstruct your objects while you re workin on your InDesin pae. 2

Go to the SMART Ecosystem Network loin pae, and then follow the on-screen instructions to download the file to your desktop. 2. Double-click the.exe file. The SMART Notebook Publisher wizard appears. 3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. To install SMART Notebook Publisher for Adobe InDesin CS5 1. Go to the SMART Ecosystem Network loin pae, and then follow the on-screen instructions to download the file to your desktop. 2. Double-click the.zxp file. The Adobe Extension Manaer appears. 3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. Installin on Mac operatin system software To install SMART Notebook Publisher for Adobe InDesin CS4 1. Go to the SMART Ecosystem Network loin pae, and then follow the on-screen instructions to download the file to your desktop. 2. Double-click the file. The file contents decompress. 3. Move the file s contents to Applications/Adobe InDesin/CS4/Plu-Ins. 5

Go to the SMART Ecosystem Network loin pae, and then follow the on-screen instructions to download the file to your desktop. 2. Double-click the file. The Adobe Extension Manaer appears. 3. SMART desined the menu items to look and behave like other InDesin menu items. If you click Renderin Options, Lockin or Add Interactivity, a dock appears containin panels that you can dock, move and hide as you can with other InDesin panels. Usin these menu items and panels, you can create new documents, ta text for vector or raster export, show or hide tas and export your document to a SMART Notebook file. 7

12 C H A P T E R 3 Usin SMART Notebook publisher Creatin a new document When you create a new document, SMART Notebook publisher sets the document paes to landscape orientation at points so that all content on the paes is visible in a SMART Notebook pae without scrollin. This size is optimal for viewin on most SMART Board interactive whiteboards. To create a new document 1. Select SMART Notebook > File > New SMART Notebook Document. The New SMART Notebook Document dialo box appears. N N OT E S o o You can also create a new document by clickin File > New > SMART Notebook Document. You can create a new document by clickin File > New > Document but it won t be set to landscape orientation at points. See Resizin to the SMART Notebook pae on pae Type the number of paes you want in your document. 3. If you make your InDesin document available to users who haven t installed the SMART Notebook publisher plu-in, select Enable missin plu in warnin, and then click OK. When you copy the InDesin file to a computer that doesn t have the SMART Notebook publisher plu-in installed, a Missin Plu-ins messae appears. I I M P OR T A N T You can t enable or disable the Enable missin plu-in warnin option after you create the document. A new blank document appears. 4. Click File > Save as, type a file name for your InDesin file, and then click Save. T T I P If you add backround imaes to your document paes, lock or protect the imaes so that SMART Notebook users can t move or delete them. See Lockin content on pae 15 for more information. 8

13 C H A P T E R 3 Usin SMART Notebook publisher Exportin to a SMART Notebook file When you re finished your InDesin document, you can export the entire document, select paes or a rane of paes to a SMART Notebook file. You can also choose to automatically open the file in SMART Notebook after you export it. To export to a SMART Notebook file 1. Select SMART Notebook > File > Export. The Export SMART Notebook Document dialo box appears. 2. Select the number of paes to export. 3. If you want to open the document in SMART Notebook software after you export it, select Automatically open. 4. Click Export. The Save As dialo box appears. 5. Type a name in the File Name area, and then click Save. If you selected the option in step 3, SMART Notebook software appears showin the exported document. N N OT E S o o You can also export your document by clickin File > Export for SMART Notebook software. Your exported file can appear differently on other computers if they have a different operatin system, video resolution or screen size than your computer. 9

14 C H A P T E R 3 Usin SMART Notebook publisher Renderin text and imae objects for export By default, SMART Notebook publisher exports all text and imae objects to SMART Notebook software in raster format. By exportin objects in raster format, you preserve the look and feel of the content when you see it on the SMART Notebook pae; however, the SMART Notebook user won t be able to edit the content. All objects that you ta as raster in InDesin export to SMART Notebook software as 144 dpi pixelbased raster objects which is twice the 72 dpi resolution native to SMART Notebook software. You can see the pixels that make up raster objects when you zoom in. Text objects aren t reconized as text, so you re unable to edit them usin SMART Notebook software after you export them. You can also choose to export text or imae objects to SMART Notebook software in vector format. Text that you render in vector format in InDesin exports to SMART Notebook software as vector text objects. SMART Notebook software reconizes these fields as text so you can edit the text and chane attributes like font, color and size. You can export any font that s installed on your computer as vector. One characteristic of vector text objects is that you can resize them without compromisin quality. 10

15 C H A P T E R 3 Usin SMART Notebook publisher N N OT E S The imae quality of raster formatted objects or text reduces if you chane their scale. Many of InDesin s text formattin properties aren t supported by SMART Notebook software so they don t appear in the vector-taed text objects on the SMART Notebook pae. If you want to keep the oriinal desin intact and you don t want users to edit the content in SMART Notebook software, use raster formattin. Tain objects for export By default, SMART Notebook publisher exports all objects in raster format, preservin the imae and text objects properties. If you want to allow SMART Notebook users to edit the objects you can export them in vector format, but they can lose some of their properties. See Exported vector object properties on pae 14 and Exported vector text properties on next pae for more information. To ta objects for vector export 1. Select a text or imae object. 2. If the dock isn t open, select SMART Notebook > Renderin Options. 3. Select Export as vector. The vector ta appears on the bottom-riht corner of the object. To ta objects for raster export 1. Select a text or imae object. 2. If the dock isn t open, select SMART Notebook > Renderin Options. 3. Select Export as raster. The vector ta clears from the object. 11

16 C H A P T E R 3 Usin SMART Notebook publisher Exported vector text properties I I M P OR T A N T If you export text in vector format, it miht not appear the same on a SMART Notebook pae because of the different formattin options available in SMART Notebook software, such as character spacin, leadin indents and bullet types. You can export text in vector format usin any font installed on your computer. Use common fonts because you re unable to embed fonts in SMART Notebook software. You can export text objects in vector format with the followin formattin properties: Font size and color Bold, italics and underline Bullets Transparency Left and riht justification The followin are examples of effects and formattin that aren t supported and are removed when you export text objects in vector format. See Removin unsupported text features on next pae to remove these unsupported effects before you export the document. Kernin Trackin Case (e.., small caps) Position Strikethrouh Liatures Scale Baseline shift Skew Indents and spacin Underline Color options Drop caps N N OT E S SMART recommends that you use text boxes without lines or fill. If you export bullets in vector format, they don t always behave as expected. Shaped objects containin text aren t supported. Frames within frames aren t supported. 12

17 C H A P T E R 3 Usin SMART Notebook publisher Removin unsupported text features If your InDesin document has text effects or pararaph styles that aren t supported in SMART Notebook software, you can remove them and preview what the exported file looks like by usin the Removin unsupported text features option. See To remove unsupported text features on next pae. E X A M P LE If you have a text object with a drop shadow, selectin the option tas the object for vector export and removes the effect as shown below. If you ta a text object for vector export, but don t remove the unsupported text features, you won t be able to preview the text in InDesin. 13

18 C H A P T E R 3 Usin SMART Notebook publisher To remove unsupported text features 1. Select the text object. 2. If the dock isn t open, select SMART Notebook > Renderin Options. 3. Select Remove unsupported text features. The unsupported text features are removed, and the vector ta corner of the object. appears on the bottom-riht N N OT E Repeat the procedure if you add features to your text object after you initially perform this procedure.. Exported vector object properties SMART Notebook software interprets lines exported in vector format as diital ink and converts shapes into shapes you can edit. The followin are examples of formattin that isn t supported by SMART Notebook publisher when you export objects in vector format. Shapes with radient fill Text within objects Frames within frames Compound paths If you export straiht lines curved or multi-point lines closed objects circles and ellipses on a SMART Notebook pae, they appear as straiht lines diital ink closed shapes that you can fill polyon shapes N N OT E If you have compound paths in your document, click Object > Paths > Release Compound Path on the InDesin menu bar to make them compatible with SMART Notebook software. You miht have to do this several times. 14

19 C H A P T E R 3 Usin SMART Notebook publisher Lockin content When you create new content, text and imae objects are unlocked by default. N N OT E S When you lock an object, it s locked on a SMART Notebook pae only. It isn t locked on your InDesin pae. After you export the document, SMART Notebook users can unlock objects, but they can t unprotect an object. There are five options for lockin objects: Option Unlock Lock in place Allow move Allow move and rotate Protect Description You can move, rotate and edit the object You can t move, rotate or edit the object You can move the object, but you can t rotate or edit it You can move or rotate the object, but you can t edit it You can t move, rotate, edit or unprotect the object N N OT E S If users want to copy or paste objects in SMART Notebook software, they can unlock them. They can t remove protection from an object, so they can t copy or paste protected objects. Protect content such as copyrihted imaes when you want to be sure that users can t unlock it. SMART Notebook software puts protected content into the bottom layer of the SMART Notebook pae where users can t unlock it. To lock or protect objects 1. Select the text or imae object. 2. Select SMART Notebook > Object Attributes. 15

20 C H A P T E R 3 Usin SMART Notebook publisher 3. Select one of the options under the Lockin headin. A ta indicatin the option you selected appears at the ede of the object. If you selected Protect, the object also has a cross-hatch shadin over it, as shown below. N N OT E The Show/Hide Tas feature also removes the cross hatch shadin from protected objects. See Showin or hidin tas below. Showin or hidin tas Dependin on whether you ta a sinle object or a rouped object, the Renderin, Lockin or Interactivity tas appear below or beside the object or objects. E X A M P LE Sinle object Grouped object If the tas obscure other objects on your pae, you can hide them. To show them aain, repeat the procedure below. N N OT E If you put InDesin into Overprint Preview mode, all SMART Notebook publisher tas are hidden. 16

21 C H A P T E R 3 Usin SMART Notebook publisher To show or hide tas Select SMART Notebook > Show/Hide Tas, and then select or clear the option. N N OT E If there s a check mark beside the ta type in the menu, tas are showin. Resizin to the SMART Notebook pae When you create a new document usin the procedure in Creatin a new document on pae 8, SMART Notebook publisher sets the paes to landscape orientation at points so that all content on the paes is visible in a SMART Notebook pae without scrollin. If you import an InDesin file or create a new one (usin File > New menu in InDesin) with different dimensions or in portrait orientation, the exported file doesn t fit the SMART Notebook pae. You can use the Resize to SMART Notebook Pae feature to chane your document s orientation to landscape and resize it to points. N N OT E S If your pae is more than 800 points wide, content on the pae is cropped from the SMART Notebook pae. If your pae is more than 600 points lon, the SMART Notebook pae extends so that users must use a scroll bar to see all of the pae. To resize your InDesin pae 1. Select SMART Notebook > Document Setup > Resize to SMART Notebook Pae. A SMART Notebook publisher dialo box appears statin that the document will resize to points, and that some objects could fall outside of the viewable area. Select the Don t show aain option if you don t want to see this dialo box aain. 2. Click OK. 17

You can also modify or remove all of these effects after you export your document to SMART Notebook software. Creatin SMART hyperlinks You can add hyperlinks to objects that link to another pae in your document or to a web pae. You can also choose to use the object or an icon on the corner of the object to open the link. To add a hyperlink 1. Select the text or imae object. 2. If the dock isn t open, select SMART Notebook > Add Interactivity. 3. Select SMART Hyperlink. 4. Select a destination type from the Location drop-down list. The Launch by clickin options appear. 19

24 C H A P T E R 4 Addin interactive effects 5. If you select Pae in this file, select the pae number from the drop-down list. If you select Web pae, type the URL in the text field. A Pae in this file or Web pae ta appears at the ede of your InDesin object. N N OT E A red ta on your InDesin object indicates that you didn t select a pae or the link is missin. 6. If you want to add the hyperlink to the entire object, select Object in the Launch by clickin area. If you want to add the hyperlink to an icon on the lower-left corner of the object on the SMART Notebook pae, as shown below, select Corner icon. N N OT E SMART Notebook users won t know that there s a link on an object unless you tell them or select Corner icon. To remove a hyperlink 1. Select the object. 2. If the dock isn t open, select SMART Notebook > Add Interactivity. 3. Select SMART Hyperlink. 4. Select None from the Location drop-down list. Usin Erase to Reveal You can hide content with a rectanular color fill that you can later reveal by erasin in SMART Notebook software. The Erase to Reveal feature hides the entire object, so if you want to hide a portion of an object, or use an irreularly shaped mask to hide an object, see Alternative Erase to Reveal on pae

25 C H A P T E R 4 Addin interactive effects To enable Erase to Reveal 1. Select the text or imae object. 2. If the dock isn t open, select SMART Notebook > Add Interactivity. 3. Select Erase To Reveal. 4. Select a color from the Ink color drop-down list. T T I P o o o o The colors shown in the list are the same as the colors in the InDesin Swatch list. Use only solid colors. SMART Notebook publisher doesn t support radient fills. If you want the objects to be invisible until you reveal them, select the same color as the pae s backround color. If you want it to be obvious that ink is coverin an object, select a color that contrasts the backround color. A reen eraser ta appears below the object, and a small rectanle showin the selected color appears on the lower-riht corner of the object. After you save and export the document to SMART Notebook software, a colored rectanular mask hides the object. The rectanle is four points larer, with four point radius corners, than the object. You can use the eraser in SMART Notebook software to erase the colored mask, revealin the object. 26 C H A P T E R 4 Addin interactive effects Alternative Erase to Reveal You can create your own Erase to Reveal effect to hide a portion of an object or an irreularly shaped object by creatin your own maskin shape. To hide an object 1. Draw a thick line with more than two points usin InDesin drawin tools to create a shape slihtly larer than the object you want to hide. 2. Chane the shape s color as required. T T I P If you want the objects to be invisible until you reveal them, select the same color as the pae s backround. 3. Dra the shape over the object you want to hide. 4. Select the shape. If the dock isn t open, select SMART Notebook > Renderin Options. 5. Select Export as vector. The vector ta appears on the bottom-riht corner of the object. After you save and export the document to SMART Notebook software, a colored mask hides the object. You can use the eraser in SMART Notebook software to erase the colored mask, revealin the object. 27 C H A P T E R 4 Addin interactive effects Usin the Infinite Cloner By enablin the Infinite Cloner, you can quickly duplicate text or imae objects after you export them to SMART Notebook software. N N OT E Don t enable the Infinite Cloner on objects that have interactive effects such as animation or links. To enable the Infinite Cloner 1. Select the text or imae object. 2. If the dock isn t open, select SMART Notebook > Add Interactivity. 3. Select Infinite Cloner. 4. Select the Infinite Cloner check box. A reen Infinite Cloner ta appears below the object. After you save and export the document to SMART Notebook software, you can dra the object to create copies. 28 C H A P T E R 4 Addin interactive effects Addin sound effects You can add links from objects to MP3 sound effects files that open when you select the object. You can also choose to use the object or an icon at the corner of the object to open the sound file. N N OT E S The linked MP3 file isn t packaed in the InDesin file, but it is embedded in the exported SMART Notebook file. Lare MP3 files can affect the performance of the SMART Notebook pae. To add a sound effect to an object 1. Select the text or imae object. 2. If the dock isn t open, select SMART Notebook > Add Interactivity. 3. Select Sound Effect. 4. Select the Add sound check box. The File box and the Launch by clickin options appear, and a your InDesin object. ta appears at the ede of N N OT E A red ta on your InDesin object indicates that you didn t select a sound file or the link is broken. 5. Click Browse and locate the MP3 sound file you want to link to the object. 6. If you want to link the MP3 file to the entire object, select Object in the Launch by clickin area. If you want to link the MP3 file to a speaker icon on the lower-left corner of the object, as shown below, select Corner icon. N N OT E Users won t know that there is a sound effect on an object unless you tell them, or select Corner icon. 24

29 C H A P T E R 4 Addin interactive effects Animatin objects You can ta text or imae objects for animation in a variety of ways: Fade in or out Flip around axis Fly in or out Shrink and row Spin The options you can use to set the direction, speed, start and repetition vary dependin on the animation type you select. I I M P OR T A N T You are unable to see or demonstrate the animation on your InDesin pae. The animation is visible only on your SMART Notebook pae after you export it. To animate an object 1. Select the text or imae object. 2. If the dock isn t open, select SMART Notebook > Add Interactivity. 3. Select Animation. 4. Select an option from the Type drop-down list. A reen ta appears at the ede of the object, as shown below. 25

N N OT E The options available chane dependin on the animation type selected. After you save and export the document to a SMART Notebook file, you can use SMART Notebook software to chane the animation properties. 26

32 C H A P T E R 5 Troubleshootin Troubleshootin InDesin issues Issue Cause Solution When you install the SMART Notebook publisher plu-in for InDesin CS5 for Windows computers, a "cannot be verified" error messae appears. When you undo chanes to an object s sound, animation or Erase to Reveal features while the object is selected, the object shows that the chanes are reversed, but the panels don t update to show the chanes. When you assin a radient color swatch, an error and a white Erase to Reveal object appears. When you use InDesin CS5 on a Mac computer, the SMART Notebook publisher panels behave unexpectedly. When you stack the SMART Notebook publisher panels and select a lower one to brin to the front, it behaves unexpectedly. When you use InDesin CS5 on a Mac computer, you must select controls, such as Infinite Cloner, twice to activate them. A certificate authority issuer is missin from the Certificate manaer Trusted Root Certification Authorities folder on the computer. Notebook publisher software doesn t support radient color. This is a known Adobe InDesin issue. This is a known Adobe InDesin issue. This is a known Adobe InDesin issue. Follow the instructions on / /root-certificate/osroot.php to download and install the GlobalSin Root CA certificate. Clear and then select the object to refresh the panel, showin the chanes Resize the panel to refresh it. 28

33 C H A P T E R 5 Troubleshootin Troubleshootin export issues This section provides information to help you troubleshoot issues you encounter when exportin your InDesin paes to SMART Notebook software. Issue Cause Solution The color of text exported in vector format appears differently on a SMART Notebook pae. On Mac computers, object lines exported in vector format don t appear on a SMART Notebook pae. A sound file linked to an object on an InDesin pae doesn t play in SMART Notebook software on a different computer. Gradient fills, compound shapes and special effects on objects exported in vector format don t appear correctly on a SMART Notebook pae. Objects and text rotated usin the InDesin Rotate Spread feature don t appear correctly on a SMART Notebook pae. SMART Notebook publisher uses Adobe InDesin Color Manaement System to convert CMYK color to RGB when it saves the file as a.notebook file. SMART Notebook software doesn t support a line thickness of less than one pixel. The InDesin Packae feature doesn t include the sound file.the sound file must be on the computer with SMART Notebook software at the same location as the computer with InDesin. SMART Notebook software doesn t support these InDesin features SMART Notebook publisher doesn t support the Rotate Spread feature. Use RGB colors when creatin your InDesin document. Use a line thickness reater than one pixel when creatin your InDesin document. Copy the sound file to the same location on the computer with SMART Notebook software.
