4 Planning and designing a layout When you plan and design a publication, you must make lots of decisions. What size? Which colors? How will the publication be produced, printed, and distributed? QuarkXPress can help you work through the planning process and develop and modify preliminary designs. The features of QuarkXPress let you speed up the production process. You can resize groups of items proportionately in a matter of seconds, change page numbering schemes with ease, and quickly alter page layouts using master pages, for example. During production, the flexible layout environment of QuarkXPress lets you rework and refine the preliminary design until you and your clients internal and external are satisfied. Format pages automatically with master pages; edit master pages to make global changes Apply master pages and add, delete, and move pages using the convenient Document Layout palette Place boxes and lines using measurement increments as accurate as 1/1,000th of a point Wrap text around boxes, lines, clipping paths, and alpha channels Working with text You can generate text using a word processing program, then import the text directly into a QuarkXPress layout. 6 Fine-tuning the layout No matter how you generate your text and graphics, QuarkXPress lets you build your documents quickly. You can create templates for often-used layouts so that you can rapidly place text and pictures onto formatted pages. With style sheets, you can style text and even individual characters into consistent headlines, subheads, body copy, and captions. Complicated text formatting becomes a simple, one-step process. Precise text adjustments can be made using the leading, kerning, and line-, word-, and character-spacing features. Imported pictures can be framed, rotated, skewed, sized, and cropped. Then text can be flowed around pictures and items to create elegant text wraps.
