Creating & Sending PDF Files Using Piedmont s Print Driver PageMaker PC
Quick Overview for Creating New Documents Go to PageMaker and open the file that you want to send Go to the File menu - select Document Setup Set all your Margins to.25 In the Compose to printer list choose PiedmontPrint Select OK Check your document for type reflow or design errors Go to the File menu - select Print Select PiedmontPrint as your Printer and your PPD. Select Print to print, just as if you were printing to your desk top printer Detailed Instructions The following instructions are to aid you in developing and printing a file in Adobe PageMaker version 7.0x, as well as version 6.5x. Step 1. Select the PiedmontPrint Driver 1. Go to the File menu and choose Document Setup. In the Document Setup window, choose the PiedmontPrint printer in the Compose to printer list. 2. Set all your Margins to.25 (for documents that do not bleed) and.375 (for documents that do bleed) for your Safe Area 3. Click OK. 4. Do a Save or Save As Why do I need to do this? This will configure your new document with the correct page margins and available fonts. If you are using our printer driver with files that have been previously configured for another printer this will configure your document with the correct page margins and available fonts. You may encounter font substitution or type reflow problems.
Step 2. Design Your Layout Per The PageMaker Rules listed below. PageMaker Layout Rules 1. Document Size: Create your document with measurements that match the final trim size of your piece unless you have a bleed. If your document has a bleed then add.25" to your document size. This extra area will be trimmed off during the finishing process. Examples: If you are creating an 8.5''x11'' tri-fold brochure NO BLEEDS, your document size should be 8.5''x11''. If you are creating an 8.5"x11" tri-fold brochure WITH BLEEDS your document size should be 8.75"x11.25". 2. Bleeds: If your document contains images or colors that extend to the edge of the page, it is considered a document with bleeds. To ensure that these images appear correctly, without any white space between the image and the edge of your document, it is important to extend any bleeds.125 beyond the edge of the document. This extra area will be trimmed off during the finishing process. 3. Live, or safe Area: Make sure that all your images and text are inside of a safe margin of.25 around the edge of your document. This leaves enough room for the press to grab the sheet without disturbing the images. 4. Colors: To make sure your document includes only the colors you want to print, choose UTILITIES > Define Colors. Double-click a color, and then use the drop-down menu next to TYPE to choose process or spot and use the drop-down menu next to MODEL to select CMYK. If you use a Pantone defined color, be sure to set its Model to CMYK and TYPE to Process. 5. Linked Images: Images such as pictures, logos and other artwork that accompanies your files must meet our criteria to ensure quick and accurate turnaround of your job. Make sure your linked images are: a. In CMYK mode or Grayscale mode if it is black only. b. Saved in TIFF or EPS format Do not send files in JPG, BMP, PICT or GIF. c. All images must be a minimum of 300 DPI for photo images and 600 DPI for bitmap (black and white scanned) line art. Vector art files from programs such as Illustrator or Freehand should be saved as EPS files for placement into your layout. d. Confirm that all your links are present before sending your files. Do this by selecting FILE > Links Manager. File status must be OK (no question marks shown) and listed as TIFF or EPS. If files have question marks next to them, double-click the file name to see more information. e. Do not use OPI 6. Fonts: Use actual fonts such as Helvetica Bold or Times Italic to modify your type. Do not use the style bar to make these distinctions, as the styles may not translate. 7. Scaling Images: Be very careful when scaling images that you have imported to your PageMaker layout. Do not enlarge any image greater than 125% of its original size. If you do, you will decrease the image s effective resolution and the result will be a poor quality printed image. Do not reduce an image below 15%. Generally, vector art, such as is created in a program like Illustrator or Freehand, may be scaled to any size without compromising quality, although to avoid printing problems, you should not reduce these files below 15%.
Step 3. Output Instructions (Select the PiedmontPrint Driver) 1. Go to the File menu and select Print 2. On the Document tab make sure our printer driver is displayed in both the Printer: and PPD: fields. 3. On the Paper tab check the Center page in print area 4. On the Options tab; a. In the Sending Image Data: field select Normal. b. In the Data Encoding: field select Send ASCII image data. c. In the Download Fonts: field select PostScript & TrueType. *It is very important to be sure this box is not checked. If it is, it will send your file to your desktop instead of to Piedmont Printing as intended.*
5. On the Color tab select the Composite and Color radio buttons. 6. Click Print to get the process started. 7. Sign in with your address and password at the PIEDMONT PRINTING Order Web Site. 8. Next, select the SEND PC FILES Order Form from the drop down list. 9. Fill out the Order Form and click Send. 10. After your file is sent, you will receive an with a link to view a soft proof on your job. After reviewing your job, please click the Approved or Reject button to give us a status update. *Note: If you do not receive an to view your proof within 30 minutes your files did not go through. Please try sending your job again.
