We have had a number of support tickets come in from students who logged in to Learning Catalytics to review their past sessions but it shows that they didn't participate, even though they were in class and did use. In all of these situations the problem was that the student had two accounts and was looking at the participation history of the other account. Please follow these instructions to confirm that this is the case for you and how to resolve it. If you are unable to resolve the issue please contact edtech@tufts.edu. Contact your professor to see if you appear in the Learning Catalytics grade book twice If you show up twice in your professor's gradebook it means that you have used two accounts while participating in the sessions for your course. Your instructor is not able to see your login name in the gradebook (only actual name and address) so you'll need to figure out which account you used for the majority of your participation by looking at the participation history of both accounts. Perform a password reset for your accounts If you don't know the password for both of the accounts you were using, follow these instructions for performing a password reset using your address: How do I retrieve my username and/or password? Make sure you are able to log in to both accounts before moving on to the next step. Identify which login has the missing participation history Log into with each account and click on Review older class sessions. Make note of which login has the majority of your participation history. If you don't see the participation history in either account it is possible that you have a third account with a different address. NOTE: This is also a good time to check the expiration dates on both accounts by following these instructions: Click on your account name to check your expiration date. We recommend that you use the account with the most time left on it. Use only one account for future participation and notify your professor Make sure that you record the username and password for your primary account so you don't forget it in the future. Let your professor know that you were using two accounts and which sessions you participated in using the other account so they don't mark you as absent for those sessions. Page 34

Note to Faculty: Tufts is transitioning from using to using Poll Everywhere for classroom response, polling, and student engagement. If you have not already been working with, we recommend that you use Poll Everywhere instead. This Quick Start Guide demonstrates quick steps to create an instructor account and a course on. See below (Download PDF). For more detailed step-by-step instructions, visit Help. Page 36
When you deliver questions to students and gather responses in real time, what could you do about it? Consider these tips from the video below: "Give students enough time--but not too much time--to really think about the question." Typically, close a poll when 70-80% of answers are collected to minimize the last group of students still "guess" an answer choice. Try open-ended question formats to "take note of common misconceptions in the realtime results as they are forming" Learn more about managing question delivery and responses Visit this website to learn more about using in class (Instructor-Led Synchronous). Page 37
You have collected student responses to a question. What can you do to stimulate discussion about the responses? One simple technique is Peer Instruction. Consider the following tips from the video below: For questions that have correct answers, revisit the concept if a majority of answers are incorrect (e.g., 30% or less are correct ) or move on when over 70% of students know the answer When student answers are spilt (30-70%), have students convince a person sitting next to them, and then repoll the same question. This discussion process helps all students to think about why and keeps them engaged. Avoid influencing or giving direct feedback while students discuss their answers. Rather, bring up the remaining misconception after revoting. Show responses (without correctness) to create debate that legitimizes students responses Learn more about Peer Instruction Visit this website to learn more about features such as a seat map or teambased assessment to faciliate peer instruction in your class. Page 38
"How do I still cover the required material when interactive teaching methods take away class time?" Consider the following tips from the video below: Flipped classroom techniques push content delivery outside of the classroom I don t have to cover everything in class It s not all or nothing. I can flip something or parts of the class. Students consume content outside the classroom. It does not have to be videos. Use JiTT (just-in-time teaching) assignments before class to ensure students consume the content thoughtfully Provide appropriate incentives - Stick: Points are awarded for assignment completion; Carrot: Class time is shaped by students questions Example JiTT question: What was the most confusing part of the pre-class readings? Usually do it the night before so you have time before class to prepare yourself to address those points. Learn more about managing class time To faciliate JiTT or out-of-class learning, use Online (Automated Synchronous) or Independent (Self-Paced or Self-Test) mode of question delivery in. Page 39
How best can you structure your course grade in order to encourage student participation in? Consider the following tips from the video below: Balance competing tendencies when assigning credit. Some people choose to give extra credits on correct answers in addition to participation points. A common practice: 5-7% of a total grade is appropriate. "Too little credit and students will blow it off Too much credit and questions will feel like a test" Learn more about scoring Visit this website to learn more about setting up your scores. Page 40
Consider an example of using for a class session (see the video below for more information): Before class: Have students reflect on class materials (readings, lecture videos, etc) and answer some questions in an asynchronous module such as the self-paced or self-test mode) Start of class: Pose some key questions to ensure pre-class work During class: 3-5 questions that reveal misconceptions or that provide opportunites to apply key concepts End of class: Save a few mins at the end to ask students to summarize key concepts or report on further questions Learn more about structuring a typical class session using Page 41
Contact to set up your TA as an Instructor Educational Technology services will send instructions for how your TA can set up their instructor account. Share your course with your TA Click the gear to the right of the course name in the "My Courses" view and select "Share Course". Then click "Share this course with another instructor" Page 42
Enter the TA's address in and click OK. Your TA will receive an with a link to accept the invitation to the course. They then will have the same capabilities in as you do. Page 43
