1 modusgate Quick Start Guide About the Startup Guide This modusgate console Startup Guide is designed to assist you in configuring the modusgate server using the simplified modusgate Configuration console. The modusgate application is a gateway to the server, it serves as a filtering agent by scanning exchanged s before sending them to the server. Follow the instructions in the modusgate Quick Install Guide to install the application, or contact your administrator. Once the modusgate console is installed, it automatically launches the application in order to setup your deployment. The following desktop icon is saved on your desktop: System Overview The modusgate console is composed of five configuration modules, these are described in the following table: Module Domains Services Security Advanced console About Description Provides information and configuration settings for the configured domains and the mail server. Provides information about the services running in the system. Provides the latest anti-spam and anti-virus definition files. Provides the audit trail log files and advanced configuration tool. 2 Launch the configuration console The modusgate console starts up with the Console Home that displays the configuration modules and provides a quick search feature to quickly find the module you are looking for. Configure domains To start, you must provide the modusgate server with a valid account from the domain where the server resides. The tool provides an auto-discovery feature that speeds up the configuration process. Optionally manual configurations is also available for custom settings. Both methods are designed to simplify domain settings. Note: The modusgate and the Exchange server use port 25 by default. If the modusgate console is installed on a Small Business Server (SBS), you must change the port number before continuing. To do so: Access Vircom s website at and download the pertaining PDF document. Follow the steps in sections 4.1, and 4.2. Add a new domain Use one of the following methods when adding new domains: To add a domain using auto-discovery, see Add a domain automatically on page 3. 3 Add a domain automatically To add a domain using the auto-discovery feature: 1 Click Domains from the left side panel of Console Home. The Domain Configuration page opens and a list managed domain names is displayed in the Domains table. You can also click Add a domain directly from Console Home. 2 Click Add Domain to add a new domain in the modusgate server.» The Auto-Discovery feature is displayed as the default option. 3 Provide a valid account in Auto-Discovery, preferably an administrator's account and click Start Auto-Discovery. If port 25 is used by another mail server, for example SBS, then the following message is displayed. See Note in Configure domains on page 2: Port 25 is being used by Exchange on this computer. Please change this port in the Mail Server Configuration screen, and in Exchange settings 4 The application queries the auto-discovery mechanism on the exchange server for the address and displays the pertinent information. If the domain is not auto-discovered then the following message is displayed: Failed to auto discover. Please manually enter the values 5 You must enter the Active Directory administrator s credentials, to validate the information with the server. Enter the credentials in Admin and Admin password. 6 Click Validate and Save. The application contacts the server to validate your parameters and sends Route Test Mail to the provided mailbox. 4 Add a domain manually To add a domain manually: 1 Click Domains from the left side panel of Console Home. The Domain Configuration page opens and a list managed domain names is displayed in the Domains table. You can also click Add a domain directly from Console Home. 2 Click Add Domain to add a new domain in the modusgate server.» The Auto-Discovery feature is displayed as the default option. 3 Click Manual Configuration. The domain parameters are displayed. 4 Enter the Domain name in Domain name: 5 Select one of the following server type values from the list in Server type: Exchange Server SMTP SMTP with VRFY When Exchange Server is selected additional parameters that are specific to the exchange server are displayed. 6 Enter a Mail server name or an IP address in server name/ip: COPYRIGHT 2017 BY VIRCOM INC. 5 7 The following Active Directory parameters only apply for Exchange Server server type. Do the following: Enter the Exchange server name or IP in Server name/ip: Enter the Active Directory Tree name in Root domain: Enter an Active Directory administrator address and password in admin and admin password: 8 Click Validate and Save. The application contacts the server to validate your parameters and sends Route Test mail. When successfully validated the following message is displayed: Success! Please verify and update the values if necessary. Delete a domain To delete a domain: 1 Click Domains from the left side panel of Console Home. 6 2 Select a domain name from the table and click Delete a Domain. 3 The message Are you sure you wan to delete <domain_name> is displayed, where <domain_name> is the domain you selected. Do one of the following: Click OK to delete it Click Cancel to abort Update mail server configuration To customize the mail server configuration: 1 Click Domains from the left side panel of Console Home. The Domain Configuration page opens and a list managed domain names is displayed in the Domains table. You can also click Modify mail server directly from Console Home. 2 The existing parameter values are displayed in read mode in the Mail Server Configuration section. 7 Manage services Manage the behavior of the modusgate services by starting, stopping or restarting them when necessary. The status of the modusgate services is displayed in the Services console. Start/Stop/Restart services Use the Services console to display the running services. If services are stopped, started or restarted, and you are experiencing problems, then consult the modusgate audit logs to troubleshoot any issues. To view the audit logs, see Access log files on page 10. To control the modusgate services: 1 Click Services from the left side panel of the console, or from the Console Home page. The Services page opens and displays a list of running modusgate services. 2 The list of services provides the state, service name, description, status and port number. Click to select a service, or multiple services in the list. 3 Do one of the following: Click Start to start the service Click Stop to stop the service Click Restart to restart a services. If you are experiencing issues with the running services, consult the audit logs in order to track the audit trail and the eventual cause of the problems. See Advanced configurations on page 9. 8 Maintain system security Maintain your overall system security by updating the anti-spam and the anti-virus definitions from the modusgate server when necessary. Refresh your system to check if it has the latest files, the modusgate server automatically downloads the latest definitions files to ensure that your system is up-to-date. The Security console provides you with information about the latest updated definitions that were uploaded to your system and the status of the upload attempts. When errors occur, use the system logs to track the problems. See Access log files on page 10. Update anti-spam definitions View the last anti-spam verification status and update the latest definitions files as necessary. To refresh your anti-spam updates: 1 Click Security from the left side panel of the console, or from the Console Home page. 3 The status and the results of last anti-spam refresh is described in the Anti-Spam Definitions section. Click Update Anti-Spam Definitions to verify the definitions files installed in your system and to download newer ones when necessary. 10 Access log files The application is designed to keep operation, error and status logs in dedicated folders where the application is installed. Log text files are stored with a timestamp and prefixes that indicate the type of logs. Use the logs to resolve any issues or simply to track the functionality of the application. To access the log files: 1 Click Advanced from the left side panel of the console, or from the Console Home page. 2 The Logging information describes the location of the log files. 11 3 Click Open log file directory to access the log files that are stored in your machine.» Alternatively, you can open the log directory directly from the Console Home, click Explore Log Folders The text files are stored in the main directory while the data files are in their designated folders, according to their type: Audits Errors Operations 4 The text files are prefixed with their types and saved with the timestamp. Double-click on a text file from the list.» The Windows Notepad launches and the text file opens. Launch modusgate advanced console Click to launch the modusgate Advanced console that provides global settings and customizable options for managed users and domains. 12 To launch the modusgate advanced console: 1 Click Advanced from the left side panel of the console, or from the Console Home page. 2 The Advanced Console advises you to consult the Administrator s guide before launching the advanced console. 3 Click Launch Advanced Console to load the modusgate administrator tool.» Alternatively, you can open the advanced console directly from the Console Home, click Launch Advanced Console See the modusgate Administrator Guide. 13 About product licenses and software versions The About console provides information about your license key and the installed software version of modusgate. This console provides you to change or update your license key and software version, and to contact Vircom s support and sales teams. It also offers a link to Vircom s best practices for optimizing your deployment. To start, launch the About console: 1 Click About from the left side panel of the console, or from the Console Home page. 2 The About console contains the license key information and the software version information. 14 Change your license key If you need to change the license key then do the following: Click Change your license key in the About console Enter in the new license key Validate license key If you need to validate a new or existing license key then do the following: Click Validate license key in the About console. The application contacts the server to validate the new or existing license keys. If key is validated then the following message is displayed: Your license is valid. Contact Vircom Sales Click Contact Vircom Sales to open the browser and to launch the Vircom sales form. Fill in the form and send it. The Vircom Sales team will contact you shortly. Contact Vircom Support Click Contact Vircom Support to open the browser and to launch the Vircom Support form. Fill in the form and send it. The Vircom Support team will contact you shortly. Follow Security Best Practices Click Contact Vircom Support to open the browser to Vircom s knowledge base site for information about best practices for optimizing security. Download latest software updates Click Customer Software Update Portal to open the browser and to launch the software portal. Enter the necessary information to view all your software updates.
