2 The purpose of this document is to guide IT through an install of Printer Installer. For additional details and answers to many frequently asked questions, go to PreInstall Setup To ensure you are ready to install Printer Installer, please review the following requirements. Contact us at with any questions or concerns. Hit Back and Next. Re try the setup. 1. Server Setup 1.1. Create a separate instance of a Windows Server 2008 R2 or newer Join the server to your domain prior to installing Printer Installer Obtain local administrator rights to the server the software will be installed on Note: This server should not be a production / critical server running domain services, i.e., do main controller, AD server or DHCP server. 2. Create a DNS A Record 2.1. Create a DNS A record, naming it printers.yourdomain.com or similar Point to the IP address of the Printer Installer host server. *Novell users contact us at trialsupport@printerlogic.com. Install Printer Installer 1. Before installing the product, make sure you are logged in to the server that will host it as a domain admin that has read/write access to the print servers on the network If you do not have the software executable, download it at If you do not have a license file, contact us at trailsupport@printerlogic.com. Printer Installer Setup 1. Run the executable in Standard Installation mode. 2. A message will appear saying that the software installed successfully. 3. Click Close. The Printer Installer Administration will open automatically. 4. Create a root account to the software (you will add your Active Directory users later) PrinterLogic, All Rights reserved. 2
3 Create A Tree Structure 1. Rename the root node to reflect your company name. 2. On the left side, create the sub folders that reflect your company structure. 3. Place printers inside these folders and assign IP Address ranges. Import Printers From Windows Print Server 1. In the top right corner of the screen select Tools > Import/Export > Import Microsoft printers into Printer Installer as Direct IP printers to open the Microsoft Printer importer window. 2. In the Windows Networks section on the left, double click the text Double Click here to specify host. 3. Fill out the hostname or IP Address of the print server and click OK. 4. Click the [+] button on the left of the server name. 5. Select the printers you would like to import by clicking and dragging, or using the ctrl or shift key. 6. In the Printer Installer section on the right, select the folder you want to import the printers to. 7. Click the green arrow in the middle of the window to begin the import process. 8. Select Yes in the following window to start the import now During the 9 step process, the import will copy the name, location, comment, port name, and 32 bit and 64 bit drivers and profiles of each printer you are importing. 9. As printer objects are successfully copied from your print server, they will populate below the appropriate folders. If the import doesn t work by specifying the hostname or IP Address of the server, it may work to import printers first by going through the Entire Active Directory option. Make sure the printers are published in your Active Directory before you search the Entire Active Directory option PrinterLogic, All Rights reserved. 3
4 Using The Printer Finder Tool For Direct IP Printers 1. If the you are using Direct IP printers and want to import them into our Printer Installer, follow these steps: 1.1. Download and unzip the network printer scanner tool from: Open the Find_printers application in the main folder In the parameters section, enter in the subnets where the printers reside. You can include multiple subnets to scan by putting a different subnet on each line Click Scan Once the scan has completed, the application will list all the found printers Click Export to CSV at the bottom and save the csv file to a computer that can open csv files so you can add a column Insert a new column in the A, B, or C column spot and label it Printer Folder Then starting the the folder path of the folders created under the root node folder in Printer Installer (so, do not include the root node folder), type in the file path where you want to drop the printers. You need to match the folder name exactly how it shows up in the Administration console with all the spaces, uppercase and lowercase words When you are ready to import, go to the Printer Installer Administration page and click Tools > Import/Export > Data Manager You will select the Import action type, the CSV file type, and TCP/IP Printer type By clicking go you can run the program and if there are errors (like multiple printers having the same name) then it ll show in a report it generates. When it is successful it will let you know and you can then refresh the webpage to see the print queues.1.9. When you are ready to import, go to the Printer Installer Administration page and click Tools >Im port/export > Data Manager PrinterLogic, All Rights reserved. 4
5 Printer Installer Implementation Installation Guide You have the option to roll the product out to groups of users, departments, locations or the whole company at one time. Add in LDAP Settings 1. Go to Tools > Settings > General 2. In the LDAP Authentication Settings and click Add 3. Fill out the Domain Name and tab to the Primary LDAP Server and also fill that out 4. Click Test Settings (You should receive a LDAP Settings Test: Success message) Turn On SNMP Monitoring 1. Go to Tools > Settings > General 2. Go to the SNMP Status Monitoring section check the box that is labeled Enable SNMP Status Monitoring 3. You have the option to now to go the SNMP Alerts section, check the box to enable it, and fill out the SMTP settings for alerts to your IT staff for SNMP errors that arise Add IT Staff As Administrators To The Admin Console 1. Go to Tools > Users 2. Click Add and select either Active Directory > Group/User or Printer Installer > User 3. Either type the group/user or fill out the information 4. Give the appropriate access to the staff (Admin full rights, Manager any changes in specific folders, Deployer only add/remove deployments in specific folders) 5. If you make someone a manager or deployer, click Add in the bottom left to specify which folder they should have permissions to work in 6. Only users (not groups) will be listed as individuals that can receive SNMP Alerts. 6 Check Client Agent Settings 1. Go to Tools > Settings > Client 2. You can change the check in time in the top section, customize the sync settings, and choose whether you want to enable to client agent to be seen in the system tray or not Manually Install The Client Agent 1. Go to the server FQDN or A Record where Printer Installer is being hosted 2. Select Current Users (You will need to have rights to install programs on the machine) 3. After installing, you will need to close the web browser and open it again. You will want to allow the PrinterLogic plugin or extension when it pops up after opening the web browser next. Deploy the Client Agent 1. The msi package and pkg file are located on the server hosting Printer Installer in the c:\inetpub\wwwroot\client\setup folder. 2. Edit the config.ini file and replace the web address with the FQDN or A Record pointing to the server. Add Drivers/Profiles 1. Before end user printers are installed on the the workstation(s), drivers need to be assigned (note: if printers were imported from a print server, the driver will alredy be assigned and loaded). 2. To manually add drivers: 2.1. Download the print driver from the manufacturer website that you want to add to a printer 2.2. In the Administration web page, go to the printer you want to add the driver to 2.3. Click on the Drivers/Profiles tab 2.4. Click Upload New Driver on the corresponding operating system line you want to apply the driver to 2.5. Find the INF file you downloaded from the printer manufacturer s website and follow the upload steps 2.6. Click Save in the top right corner of the screen 2016 PrinterLogic, All Rights reserved. 6
7 Add Drivers/Profiles Alternate Method: 1. Download the print driver from the manufacturer website that you want to add to a printer 2. Go to Tools > Driver/Profile Repository Click Upload New Driver in the top right corner of the screen 3. Find the INF file from the driver you downloaded and follow the upload steps 4. Click Return to tree view to the left of Tools 5. Find the printers you want to apply the newly uploaded drivers to and go to the Drivers/Profiles tab 6. Click the drop down list of drivers on the operating system you want the driver to be applied to and select your driver 7. Click Save in the top right corner of the screen Auto Deploy Printers (Active Directory) 1. Go to the printer you want to deploy 2. Click the Deploy tab 3. Click Add and select your Active Directory User, Computer, Group or Container, OU Auto Deploy Printers (IP Address Range) 1. Add an IP Range to a folder in the tree structure by right clicking the folder and selecting New > IP Address Range and fill out the information 2. Deploy to that range by either clicking Add Printer to the newly created IP Address Range object in the folder, or by going to the deploy tab of any printer and clicking Add > IP Address Range > Search and selecting your newly created range Auto Deploy Printers (Hostname/MAC Address) 1. Go to the printer s deploy tab 2. Click Add > Hostname or Add > MAC Address 3. Fill out the appropriate information 2016 PrinterLogic, All Rights reserved. 7
8 Self Service Page Setup Set Portal Security 1. To restrict access to folders or printers you can use AD settings, IP Address ranges, Hostname or MAC Address: 1.1. Either select a folder or printer you want to restrict access to 1.2. Hover over the Security tab and and select Portal Security 1.3. Uncheck Include Inherited Security 1.4. Click Add and specify who should be able to see this folder or printer 1.5. Click Save in the top right corner Add A Map To The Portal Page 1. Go to the folder in your tree structure you want to add the map to 2. Click the Map tab 3. Click Upload Background Image (this would be jpg, png, or gif type images) Click Save Resize The Printer Image Icons On The Uploaded Floor Plan Map 1. Resize an image by right clicking it and selecting a size Customize The Company Logo 1. Go to the C:\inetpub\wwwroot\portal folder 2.
