2 E-Safety It is important to the College that all students know how to stay safe online. Some topics that fall under e-safety are: Illegal or inappropriate content being posted online Copyright issues Keeping your information secure Keeping passwords safe How to use discussion forums - appropriate/inappropriate language Plagiarism. Pornography Social networks - privacy settings / security Settings / radicalisation Inappropriate contact with adults Bullying (cyberbullying) Financial risks - personal details

4 Keeping your information secure The most important thing is to keep your password and personal details safe and don't let other people use your accounts. You have a lot of personal and private information in your , social media, and college accounts. Protecting your password and making sure you logout of shared computers (including college computers) will stop people from being able to access and change this information. Think about the kind of information you share with other people and why; someone only needs your name, date of birth, and place of birth to create a birth certificate and steal your identity.

7 Phishing Below is another example of a bogus . Notice that the web address they ask you to click on (1) is different when you hover over the text (2). This is an example of how people hide where they are really sending you with a web link. You think you re going to one website and end up somewhere completely different. The bogus website could be cleverly designed to look exactly like the one you thought you were going to. Internet thieves do this to try to get you to fill in personal information about yourself on their bogus website so they can use your information fraudulently or even steal your identity.

8 - General Rules Legitimate banks and businesses will NEVER ask for your password or personal details by or from a link to a website in an . If an seems too good to be true IT IS! You have not magically won the lottery that you never entered! You do NOT have a long lost uncle in Nigeria that has left you 100,000,000. If you weren t expecting an attachment from someone, be suspicious, their computer may be compromised and could have sent you a virus. Contact them to ask if they did actually send you something BEFORE opening it! If the is from someone you don t know and contains an attachment do NOT open it just delete it. If you are not sure the is genuine, call the bank / business / person that ed you, to confirm that it was them that sent it. When using banks and online shops websites check for the padlock in the address bar to say that the website is secure.

9 Chatrooms and Instant Messaging (IM) This is what a chatroom can look like. They don t all look like this, they all look different. This one uses video as well as text. You can see the videos on the left hand side. You can see the participants (those in the chatroom) on the right-hand side. The chat dialogue is in the middle. Be careful Even if you ve been chatting to the same person for ages and you feel like you know them, remember it s very easy to lie on the internet and there is no way of knowing if someone is telling the truth. Be careful not to share too much information with other people in chat rooms. You don t know who could be listening in or what they might do with that information. If you wouldn t be comfortable yelling it out in a crowded room, it is best not to write it in a chat room. Tip: It s a good idea to learn how to save conversations. This way, if anything weird or dodgy happens, you have evidence of it. NOTE: Someone telling you NOT to save conversations is a classic indication of something not being right.

10 Cyberbullying Cyberbullying is when someone uses the internet or mobiles to deliberately upset someone else. Students who are found to be using technology, such as the internet and mobile phones, to send messages that are of a bullying and inappropriate nature, will be investigated and disciplinary action taken where necessary. This may result in the student being excluded from the college. By using technology like mobiles or the internet, this type of bullying can affect someone not just at college, but at home as well. It has a 24/7 nature and can make someone feel upset or threatened in their own home. What to do 1. Tell someone 2. Save evidence 3. Block the bully (on IM, social networking sites, etc.) 4. Don t reply or retaliate to things they say or do 5. Contact your mobile service provider (if bothered by texts, etc.)

11 Cyberbullying and Mobile Phones You should only give your mobile number to friends you know in the real world. You should not put your mobile number on your social networking profile (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google+). Be careful if you share your photos with others. Pictures can be changed or shared around. Think about what the image is and who you are sending it to, before you press send. Once it s out there, it s out there forever! Bluetooth on your mobile Bluetoothing is a quick way of sharing stuff like photos, files and music. Unless you lock your Bluetooth, anyone in the area can access things in your phone, like your contacts. If you don t want to share this information with strangers, (and why would you?!) then make sure you lock your Bluetooth. GPS on your mobile GPS can pinpoint your exact location. Some apps and some phones have built in GPS. The worrying thing about using GPS technology is that your contacts will be on a map, showing exactly where they are. If you can see them, your contacts can also see where you are too. Quite scary if you have contacts on your profile that you don t know or don t trust.

12 Money Online Online shopping and banking is a convenient part of life, but bear in mind your financial footprint. Don t share your credit card or banking details with anybody, unless you are confident the site is secure. A good way to tell if the site is secure is to look for the padlock symbol, if there is a closed padlock that s ok, if it s an unlocked padlock that site is not secure. Another way of checking is to look at the URL address, if it has HTTPS in the URL, the S stands for safe and you re ok to go ahead. Before you buy anything online, if it s a company you ve never heard of, it might be worth looking at Google and checking out the reviews - to see what the customer feedback is like. If you do any transactions online and you go to print out, make sure you take your printouts with you, or save an electronic version and then print it out when you get home on your private printer.

13 Avoiding Plagiarism If you use research for an assignment, you should make sure that any ideas you 'borrow' from other people are always cited and acknowledged in your bibliography, otherwise you will be accused of 'cheating', which is called 'plagiarism'. Central College Nottingham is in possession of anti-plagiarism software known as Turnitin, in order to check your work for any ideas that are not your own and have not been referenced. Turnitin checks your work against a huge collection of Books, journal articles, websites and past papers from students all over the world. You should be aware that the college will randomly check work for plagiarism. The consequences for plagiarism are serious and will be penalised by exam boards, which will affect your grades. 14 Social Networking Social Networks are websites with applications which help connect friends using different tools like blogs, profiles, internal systems and photos. Be careful what information you give out on your profile. Remember that you don t know who your friend s friends are, or your friend s friends friends! And you don t know what they ll do with your picture or your phone number if you give it out by mistake. Once your picture is out there, it s out there forever and you won t be able to get it back. So if you would not be comfortable printing it off and handing it out on the street, maybe it should not be on your profile. Do you know the people you re talking to online? They may not always be the person they are saying they are. We recommend not meeting up with people in real life that you have met on the internet. If you do, make sure you go with someone else like a friend and make sure you let other people know where you are going, who you are meeting, and when you will be back. 15 Social networks and Radicalisation Social media has become an essential and exciting part of how we live. Millions of young people use these platforms daily to share content. But there is a small minority of users who exploit social media to radicalise and recruit vulnerable people. What is radicalisation? We often hear on the news of young people that have been radicalised and drawn into terrorist groups, but what does that mean? In simple terms radicalisation is the process of someone developing extremist views. These extremist views may lead to an individual and / or groups carrying out nonviolent and violent acts that could harm others. The government and police work closely with the communications industry to remove extremist and terrorist content from the internet. Since February 2010, over 95,000 pieces of terrorist content have been removed from the internet and the companies below continue to work with the government to limit the abuse of their platforms by terrorists and their supporters. However, more content is uploaded all the time by people from this country and elsewhere. Many of these people have an established online identity using the platforms described below. Many community based organisations respond to such propaganda and disprove their messages.

16 Social Networks and Radicalisation Facebook Extremist group supporters use Facebook to share content, such as news stories and YouTube videos, among their peer groups. Twitter Twitter is another popular social media platform for pro-extremist group accounts and those sharing extremist propaganda. It is easy to establish an account, stay relatively anonymous and share material with large numbers of people. YouTube YouTube is also used to host videos, both of extremist output and videos created by groups or individuals themselves. Multiple dummy accounts will be set up so that when videos are taken down they can be reposted quickly. Users will post YouTube links across their own social media platforms in order to disseminate material, particularly via Twitter and Facebook. Ask.fm People considering joining terrorist groups sometimes use Ask.fm to ask questions about what it is like. The answers given are all encouraging and persuasive. Instagram Instagram is used by extremist groups to share photo sets frequently produced by extremist media organisations. Extremists also use Instagram to share pictures of what they do, often suggesting they are living a full and happy life. Tumblr Tumblr, the blogging site, is exploited by extremists who provide ideological arguments. A number of individuals have used Tumblr to promote and encourage those who may be unsure about joining an extremist group. Private Messaging On social media, extremists frequently encourage others to message them on closed peer-to-peer networks when asked for sensitive information, relating to the group and their ideology. Popular private messaging apps include WhatsApp, Kik, SureSpot and Viber.
