1 Sky Social Media Guidelines for Contributors Social chatter around TV shows is inevitable and, for the most part, positive. However, contributors are advised that people have a tendency to publish things online that are often insensitive, cruel and at times even criminal. The set of guidelines below should help you to protect yourself. Please read them carefully, and consider whether you wish to engage with social media during the transmission period of your show. We have also provided a guide to privacy settings on the main social networks. If you d like help with this, please contact your production company. General Advice Conversation and chatter will be at its peak during the broadcast of any series, so be mindful that engaging with social media at this time will likely open you up to scrutiny. While we don t want to deter you from engaging, we want to ensure you re prepared for both the benefits and the pitfalls. If you do engage, only interact with positive comments. If the situation turns negative, don t engage any further in the conversation. Report it to your contact at the production company, who can then escalate to Sky, who may be able to offer advice and support. It s simply not possible to win an argument on the internet. Don t engage with negative or abusive comments, no matter how personal or upsetting they may be. If you feel victimised, bullied or think a criminal offence may have been committed, contact your production company, who can then escalate to Sky. All major social networks provide block and report facilities, which you should use to filter out abusive messages. If you re subject to online abuse, take screenshots of the messages and send them to your contact at the production company, who can then escalate to Sky. If an imminent threat has been made to your personal safety, take a screenshot of the message and notify both the police and the production company, who can escalate to Sky. Do not engage with the poster of the message. It s important to note that while Sky can offer advice, guidance and support, each individual is ultimately responsible for their own conduct on social media. 1

2 Facebook Security Settings The below instructions relate to Facebook when accessed from a desktop or laptop. As a general rule, don t accept friend requests from people you don t know. If you are on Facebook, review your privacy settings so only people you know and trust can see the more private information about your life. You can also specify privacy for every time you post something. To get to your privacy settings, click the Padlock symbol in the top right hand corner of your homepage and underneath Who can see my stuff? select Friends throughout all categories. This will make sure strangers can t access your full profile page and all your personal information. Click on See More Settings which will bring up Privacy Settings and Tools underneath Who can look me up? select Friends. By clicking on just Friends, only those you know will be able to get in touch with you. This prevents unknown people from finding you on Facebook and therefore protects your privacy. It prevents strangers from seeing your information, pictures and sending you unwanted friend requests. To change who can see your future posts: Under Who can see my stuff? go to Who can see your future posts and make sure Friends is selected this makes sure that everything you post in the future will only be viewable to people you know. To stop people from seeing your profile on Google & other search engines: On the main privacy setting page on Facebook is an Who can look me up? section. Here you can choose whether search engines are able to index your Facebook page. Please bear in mind it can take a little while for Facebook to delete the saved pages that search engines have stored. 2

3 To control direct messaging: If someone does message you, bear in mind that while the message may be private, they can use any response you give to copy and paste it, and then make it public. We would recommend that you don t get involved in direct messages about the show. On Facebook, the default setting means anyone can message you to your Other inbox. If you d like to modify who can send you Facebook messages and s, so unknown people can t message you, go to the Who can contact me? beneath the padlock at the top right corner of Facebook and choose Strict Filtering. This will allow only your friends to message you. Top Tips Think Twice: Consider all your comments twice before posting, whether publicly or in a private message. You don t want to regret saying things later. If someone has written something you find hurtful or irritating take time to think through your response. Do you really need to respond at all? You could start an argument that might have been avoided. Consider anything you write to be permanent because it s out there even if you ve deleted it. Avoid saying anything you wouldn t say face to face. Getting help: Make sure you tell your production company contact if you are unsure how to respond to a situation or have any questions about what you should do. Also, the most efficient way to report abuse on Facebook is using the Report link near the post, profile or page. Reports are confidential. Block and ignore: You can block someone on Facebook if you find their comments offensive. When you block someone, it breaks all ties you have with them. The two of you will no longer be able to see each other s profiles or find each other in search results. To Block Someone: go to the Block List in your Privacy Settings, use the link at the bottom of their profile, or use the Report link associated with the message in your inbox (or found on any content they post). People will not be notified when you block them so don t be concerned they will see. You can amend your blocked list of contacts at any time by editing your Privacy Settings. 3

4 Twitter Security Settings Here s how to keep your tweets private: Go to your Account Settings by clicking on the gear icon at the top right of the page and selecting Settings from the drop down menu. Scroll down to the Tweet Privacy section and check the box next to Protect my Tweets. Click the Save button at the bottom of the page. You will be prompted to enter your password to confirm the change. This will make sure your tweets are only viewable to people who are your approved Twitter followers. It also prevents any of your tweets or Twitter page from being viewed on search engines such as Google, as well as from within Twitter search. To block someone on Twitter: Go to the Profile page of the person you wish to block. Click the person icon. This brings a drop-down Actions menu, select Block from the options list. On Twitter only people you follow can direct message you so unfollow anyone who you don t want to be able to contact you directly. BBM Remember that no one can message you if you haven t accepted their friend request. So be sure to only accept those you know and only send out your BBM pin to those you are friends with. WhatsApp Similarly make sure you only add people you know, and only give out your phone number to friends. Instagram On your homepage, click on Edit Profile at the bottom of the screen you will see a Photos are Private option, click ON to approve this this means you will have to approve followers before they can see your photo uploads. Snapchat Don t publish your Snapchat username on other social networks. Screen grab any abusive messages and send them to your contact at the production company. Use the block function if you re receiving unwanted snaps. 4

5 What to post Would your friends be interested in what you're doing? Then it's probably worth posting about it. Don't give away any spoilers. Don't publish any talent photos or stories without their permission/signoff Post anything that gives fans an insight into the real world of production, but avoid any spoilers! Don't give away any location info, especially if talent are present Loop in talent and crew members who are active on social channels Loop in the relevant channel as @SkyAtlantic, Facebook: Sky1HD, SkyLiving, SkyAtlantic, SkyArtsHD When to post Don't publish anything if the show hasn't been announced. Be timely for the most impact. Peak times are lunch breaks and commuting times. Definitely post in the month running up to and during transmission. Repost/retweet: Has someone impressed you with a response? Reward them with recognition. You're an authority. You have caché. Use it. Avoid confrontation and don t feel obliged to answer every tweet. If you don t want to post yourself, think about supplying images etc to the channel teams at the address below Setting up new show social accounts This is actively discouraged for reasons of security, brand and marketing consistency, community management and potential conflicts with Sky s own channel attribution aim within social media. All accounts should be set up and managed in line with the Sky Third Party Social Media Guidelines. Contact socialmedia@bskyb.com BEFORE setting up any accounts. 5

6 Finally IF YOUR QUERY ISN T ANSWERED HERE THEN PLEASE CONTACT A MEMBER OF THE PRODUCTION TEAM FOR HELP. However, if you think you are in imminent danger or an emergency when using social media or otherwise then the police are the only authority who can investigate crime so you are advised to contact your local police straight away. Different people will have a different perception of and level of tolerance for abuse. We advise you always try to avoid entering into a negative conversation about your appearance in the programme, and this applies especially to children and young people. 6
