1 1 What is ? How Do I Send a Message? How Do I Reply to a Message? How Do I Forward a Message? How Do I Send a Document or Photo As an Attachment? What is ? Electronic mail, often called " ," is a way to communicate with people as close as your office or as far away as the other side of the world. You type a message and put addresses on it; programs use your computer and a network such as the Internet to deliver the message. programs run everywhere from microcomputers to supercomputers (of course, this book covers MH and related programs, which run under UNIX). The people who read your messages don't have to use the same mail system as you do; their computers don't need to run UNIX. Messages usually arrive anywhere from a few seconds to a few hours after they're sent. (They're held at computers along the way if a connection can't be made; also, some computers send mail in batches periodically.) The recipient can read your message, print it, send a reply to you and other people who were copied, file it, remove it... right away or whenever it's convenient. is getting to be a part of life. It connects people on all kinds of computers, handles an uncountable number of messages every day, and lets you stay in contact when you're not in your office. provides a handy way to get information to and from busy people without playing telephone tag or interrupting them with a phone call. You can use to announce or arrange meetings, discuss problems, share opinions among members of a group, and much more. Of course, isn't the answer for everything. Sometimes a phone call or a FAX is easier and quicker. How Do I Send a Message? You must be connected to the Internet in order to use . And it is highly likely that the program you are using for your service provided by your ISP is Outlook Express. When that program is opened, it looks like this:
2 Note at the bottom of the screen, it allows you to check if you want to go directly to your Inbox when your program (Outlook Express) starts. This is my program start page, and you will note that I have that option checked because that is what I want it to do - go directly to my Inbox upon opening. So, now that I have checked that box, my will look like the picture on the next page when opened: 2
3 3 To Create an Note the arrow is pointing to an icon and right under it are the words
4 4 Create . Click on that icon, and you will see the following. The arrow is pointing to the blank area next to the word To. This is where you will type you re the person s address to whom you are writing: You will note that there is a subject line. It is not necessary to type in a subject, however, it is a good idea so that the person who is receiving the knows what your contains. Now, note the large space of white. I have an arrow placed in that large white area. (See picture on next page.)
5 This is the area in which you will type your message. Once you have finished typing your message, you will click on Send. (See next picture for position of Send icon.) 5
6 6 Replying to An When you receive an , you can click on Reply and a box will appear with the message intact to which you are replying. Just type your message which is a response to something someone has written you, and click on Send. (See picture below.) This is an which I received, and you can clearly see that the words Reply Reply All Forward and Print on the Toolbar. To reply you would reply only to the Sender, to Reply All you would reply to all the recipients of the as well as the Sender, to Forward the you would Click on Forward and type in a new recipient s address to whom you wish to forward the . Print is fairly obvious and should be clicked on if you wish to print an . Attaching A File to Your Take a look at the previous picture of an opened . Note that on the top toolbar you will see the words File, Edit, View, Tools, Message, and Help. Explore these functions you will be surprised at what you find you can do with your . In order to attach a file from a folder in your hard drive, you would first click on Create Message, then Click on Insert, then click on File Attachment. Clicking on this option will open the box that you should be accustomed to seeing by now that allows you to go find your file and open it. When you click on file attachment, you will see the box represented in the picture on the next page.
7 7 The little window has opened with which you should be familiar by now that allows you to look for the file you wish to attach to your . Note that the arrow is pointing to the little drop down arrow on which you click to go searching for your file. Also note, that at the bottom of the box, there is a place to click named Attach to attach the selected file to your . If you have saved photos in a file folder on your desktop as you have been taught, you will be able to go find them and attach them to s. Enjoy your !
