2 2 Rational SCADA Introduction The sayings you can t manage what you can t see and you can t manage what you don t measure hold true today. In today s world of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), smart devices and smart factories (such as the Digital Oil Field and Digital Grid), companies are being flooded with multiple terabytes of data on a daily basis. Data are critical for real-time models to remotely monitor any asset or operation; however, massive quantities of data will not improve remote monitoring if the right data are not being collected. In cases where instrumentation is not installed, doing so might not seem practical. SCADA, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, systems have a large upfront cost; require dedicated software, hardware, personnel, and training to implement; can take a long time to actually install; and then must be supported and maintained in, typically, remote locations. An alternative to a complete SCADA system is rational SCADA. Rational SCADA allows for the rapid deployment of key field devices to securely provide data that will improve model accuracy without a significant investment of capital, resources, or programming. Rational SCADA Applications Rational SCADA can be used across power and process assets and operations. The following examples highlight several applications for rational SCADA; however, there are many possibilities. Virtual Well Test/Gas Lift Optimization Figure 2 illustrates how rational SCADA may be applied in virtual well testing and gas lift optimization. Accurately predicting multiphase flow in real time and optimizing gas lift by balancing increased production with higher production costs and lost sales gas improves operational efficiency and well deliverability.

Example of rational SCADA for virtual well testing/gas lift optimization Pipeline Pressure Management Managing pressure in a pipeline is easier when enough data exist to truly provide a comprehensive view of pressure throughout the pipeline. Figure 3 illustrates how rational SCADA may be applied to pipelines.

Example of rational SCADA for pipeline pressure management Pump Stations Figure 4 illustrates an example of installing rational SCADA on individual pumps in a pumping station. Similar solutions may be applied in other types of stations, such as the compressors in compressor stations, and in power plants, such as steam generators and heat recovery steam generators. Using rational SCADA in this application allows better performance monitoring and decision making at the unit level, which can provide benefits to the entire value stream.

6 Rational SCADA 6 How it Works The rational SCADA solution is highly flexible for any situation. This solution is threefold, forming the architecture illustration in Figure 5: Instrumentation Communication Data collection, management, and transformation Cell Tower Internet Remote Location DO_4 DO_5 DO_6 DO_7 DI_0 DI_1 DI_2 DI_3 Power Power Ready Ready Port 1 Port 1 Port 2 Port 2 AI0+ DO0 AI0- DO1 AI1+ DO2 AI1- DO3 AI2+ GND AI2- DO4 AI3+ DO5 AI3- DO6 COM0 DO7 DI0 SIGNAL PWR1 READY GSM PWR2 FAULT GPRS DI1 DO8 DI2 DO9 DI3 DO10 GND DO11 GND DO12 DO13 DO14 DO15 Power AI_0 UMTS TX HSPA RX COM1 DIO0 Rational SCADA Panel DIO1 DIO2 DIO3 GND ETHERNET AI_1 R0 Rational SCADA powered by OptiRamp Port 1 Console Virtual Tag Server Instrumentation Your time: 09/01/2016 4:22:36 Your time: 09/01/2016 4:22:36 Your time: 09/01/2016 4:22:36 Figure 5. Rational SCADA architecture Instrumentation All instrumentation is easy to install in existing systems (takes less than 5 minutes per device) and also requires little maintenance. The instrumentation is ruggedized to work in harsh outdoor environments and, while the instrumentation uses little power and has an internal battery that will last for years, an optional solar module is available with an integrated charger, battery panel, and mounting bracket to ensure device uptime. Devices have communication ranges of up to ½ mile (roughly 0.8 km).
7 Rational SCADA 7 Communication A communication panel is located within ½ mile (~0.8 km) of the instrumentation. Data are communicated via cellular or Internet connectivity to the OptiRamp Virtual Tag Server for data collection, management, and transformation. Data Collection, Management, and Transformation The OptiRamp Virtual Tag Server (VTS) is an intelligent historian that virtualizes tags to help understand remote field sensors. It was designed to handle large data sets and to collect data from multiple sources using multiple communication protocols. Little maintenance and support is required to keep the VTS running efficiently and effectively, allowing more time to analyze data that have been transformed into dynamic key performance indicators (KPIs) and Tag Advanced Functions (TAF). These data are used in the OptiRamp runtime applications and visualized in the OptiRamp web applications, promoting operational intelligence across the entire value stream. Conclusion Rational SCADA is a method to rapidly deploy field devices to key locations across your entire operation value stream to help improve complete system monitoring and visualization without a significant investment of capital, resources, or programming. The result of rational SCADA is operational intelligence.
