4 OPG Profile
Manual Material Handling Preventing MSDs Manual Material Handling (MMH) involves, lifting, carrying and moving materials without the assistance of powered devices MMH can involve a variety of risk factors for MSDs, including: Awkward postures (bending, twisting, reaching) Forceful exertions (lifting, pushing, pulling or carrying) heavy loads), and Repetitive motions. Unexpected weights, unevenly distributed loads, shifting loads, awkward or uncomfortable hand hold points, irregular floor/ground surfaces (e.g. ramps, stairs, door ledges), slipping or tripping, miscommunications when sharing a load, and weather can be some of the kinds of additional factors adding to the risk of injury when performing manual material handling tasks. MSDs can be prevented through Safe Work Planning including minimizing manual handling wherever possible, good body mechanics, use of mechanical assists or powered equipment where possible, assessing and planning the travel path, and using a safety person to observe the path and direct movement of the load. 5 P r e s e n t a t i o n T i t l e
MSDs at OPG Where We Were Through the 1990 s and 2000 s, OPG s MSD injury rate persisted at ~50% of all medically treated and lost time injuries (consistent with provincial MSD statistics) MSD hazards were not consistently dealt with in the same manner as other safety hazards - MSD reports were only about worker injuries - The reports only addressed the injured worker status, not the causing condition or corrective conditions to prevent reoccurrence. Cultural bias: MSD injuries were a result of the person not the task. Reporting MSD symptoms was seen as weak Proactive vs. Reactive MSD Reporting was inversely related to other safety areas. % Lost Time Days Associated with MSD MSD Injuries Office vs. Industrial Environment Proactive vs. Reactive Reporting All Other Injuries 70% MSDs 30% Office 27% Industrial 73% Chemical Electrical Falling Objects MSD Reactive (Injury) Proactive P r e s e n t a t i o n T i t l e

MSD Awareness Training Equipping Workers with the Knowledge to Work Safely Computer-Based Training Mandatory MSD Awareness & Prevention CBT training for all staff in , with video introduction and reinforcement of expectations by our Chief Nuclear Officer; continues to be mandatory for all new employees Not the usual how to lift video impactful Making it Real - employee testimonials Holistic approach to MSD Prevention Consideration of ergonomics when doing the CBT (stretch breaks, alternatives to mousing) Face-to-Face Training to High Risk Groups Ergonomists reviewed MSD Awareness, proactive reporting expectations, and facilitated the start of the thought process of identifying and discussing controls for MSD hazards identified by specific work groups 8 P r e s e n t a t i o n T i t l e

Issue: Awkward postures / difficult to remove sump covers Solution: New tool enables light & easy removal of cover from standing position AFTER BEFORE MSD Prevention Success Stories Sump Cover Tool 11
MSD Prevention Success Stories Portable Ramp for Gas Bottles Issue: Heavy instrument air bottles had to be lifted and lowered four inches to move them on or off skids. This required two people to manually lift the heavy bottles, in awkward postures. Solution: A portable ramp with handles for easy handling was designed and constructed in-house. BEFORE AFTER 1 2
Cart Risk Management Improving Safety in the Selection and Use of Carts Manual Material Handling: Cart Expectations A cart is a non-motorized vehicle designed for transportation of material (typically with 2 6 wheels). It is manually pushed or pulled by workers, and loaded and unloaded with material. Line Management shall ensure all carts used in Nuclear for material handling are labeled with an identification sticker or tag containing the following information: Load Rating (used to ensure load weight is within load limit of the cart) Risk Hazard Level (obtained from the Cart Database on H&S s Cart webpage) OPG Owner Name and Phone Number Manufacturer s Name / Model Number, where applicable Catalog Identification (CAT ID), where applicable Line Management shall also ensure: Carts are not modified unless written approval has been given by original equipment manufacturer or appropriate engineering authority Pre-operational checks occur. Incorrectly labelled carts are not used. Load is evenly distributed to reduce tipping hazard, with heavier items on bottom shelf. Loads are secure and do not impede operator view. Carts with locking wheels have wheels locked when loading/unloading. Unattended carts inside protected areas are secured.

icare Safety Culture Initiative Breaking Through to the Next Level of Safety Through the icare Safety Culture initiative, OPG intends to revitalize and re-energize our safety culture to break through to the next level of safety outcomes. Utilizing the following sub-programs we will facilitate a movement from compliance-based culture to a compassion based culture, where everyone is motivated because we care, not just because there is a rule or a procedure. That is how we will get to our goal of zero injuries. 15 P r e s e n t a t i o n T i t l e
icare Snapshot Strategic Observation and Coaching Monthly site observations are conducted by Health and Safety staff paired with supervisors in focused areas A WELL sheet ( What Excellence Looks Like. ) for each specific topic area is completed The initiative is designed to raise awareness, increase compliance and strengthen relationships with proactive discussions about good safety practices. Results are trended and communicated to line departments to facilitate focused injury prevention efforts. 16 P r e s e n t a t i o n T i t l e
Material Handling Excellence Plan Focus on Identified Risk Areas To address an adverse trend in Manual Material Handling-related injuries, Pickering NGS Maintenance took an action to create a Maintenance Material Handling Excellence Plan, including: - A dedicated SPOC for Material Handling, - Weekly Observation & Coaching on Material Handling - Communicate material handling expectations to the mechanical maintenance department - Perform a divisional self assessment on material handling - Incorporate lessons learned, and benchmarking of other plants for MMH improvement initiatives, 17 P r e s e n t a t i o n T i t l e
2007: Leadership Priority MSD Prevention Strategy Implementation Plan : Mandatory MSD Prevention Training Safety Meeting Series on MSD Proactive Reporting of MSD Hazards MSD Prevention Results Rate of Injury in Relation to Key Initiatives (2007 to Present) : Cart Database MSD Prevention Success Stories Ergonomic Change Database : icare safety culture icare SnapShot Paired Observations Material Handling Excellence Plan / SPOC OPG AIR (All Injury Rate) MMH/MSD Events per Annum
MSDs at OPG Where We Are OPG s MSD injury rate is now ~23% of all medically treated and lost time injuries The culture around MSD has shifted dramatically: MSD is in everyone s language MSD hazards are identified and addressed in the same manner as other H&S hazards Routine as well as more challenging MSD hazards are being tackled collaboratively - the MSD Prevention Journey continues! 19 P r e s e n t a t i o n T i t l e
