Experiences and hopes of an IMS based approach to FMC Enrico Scarrone Telecom Italia Standards and IPR Department Chairman 3GPP TSG SA WG
IP Multimedia Subsystem Defined by 3GPP IMS is defined by 3GPP IMS is overlay subsystem on top of any IP Connectivity Access Network (IP-CAN), initially designed for 3GPP PS system IMS provides access to advanced MM services independent of the IP connectivity network: mobile (3GPP s UMTS, 3GPP2 s CDMA2000), fixed networks (TISPAN), Cable (e.g. Cablelabs) Build on the basis of IETF protocols IMS is based on SIP Session Initiation Protocol / SDP Session Description Protocol (for session control), Diameter (for AAA) as well as several others (RTP, RTCP, STP ) 2
IMS as convergent platform Telephony VIdeo other media Service 1 Service 2 Service N IP Multimedia Subsystem Enablers: service functionality shared by different applications feature interaction Multiservice COtrol Multimedia Session Control SERVICE CONTROL Common IP Core Network Resource Control TRANSPORT IP Access #1 IP Access #2 IP Access #N Access Independence ACCESS Multidevice DEVICE 3
The Key element is Call Session Control Function (CSCF) Sometimes found as Call State Control Function (first definition) It is a SIP statefull server handling 1. Session/Call control 2. Service interaction 3. Authentication/Security 4. Charging 5. QoS control These aspect were present from the beginning: European research projects in the second half of the 90 In first full definition of IMS made by the 3G.IP interest group in 1999, that have resulted in the Release GPP report These functionality were added on top of the naked original SIP session control as a consequence of the 3GPP IMS specification 4
IMS and standards 3GPP2 (CDMA 2000) Adopts 3GPP IMS Introduction of IP-CAN concept TISPAN NGN Rel1 adopts 3GPP IMS Based on 3GPP R6, Inputs to Rel-7 IMS PSTN/ISDN Emulation Subsystem PSTN/ISDN Simulation Services Network Attachment Subsystem (NASS) & Resource and Admission Control Subsystem (RACS) TISPAN NGN Rel2 <work in progress> IMS PART FULLY transferred in Rel-8 IMS IPTV Enterprise Network interworking Q /12 3GPP Release 5: IMS phase 1 Basic SIP call control Security (IMS AKA authentication) Codecs, Charging,.. 3GPP Release 6: IMS phase 2 QOS Early IMS for (U)SIM Interwork with CS / SIPv4 Messaging, Conferencing, Group Management, Management Objects Presence, Poc enablers Interoperability and commonality between IMS using different IP connectivity networks 3GPP Release 7 Fixed Broadband access to IMS Combinational Services Multimedia Telephony Services for IMS SMS transport over IMS Communication Service Identifier Voice Call Continuity (VCC) Multimedia interworking between IMS and CS networks 3GPP Release 8 <work in progress> COMMON IMS IMS support of Packet Cable access Multimedia Session Continuity IMS-IMS Interconnection IMS for corporate networks Interworking SMS Instant Messaging IMSCentralisedControl VCCsupportforemergencycall IMSservicebrokering LocalBreakout IMSusingmulticastbearer 5

NGN/IMS evolution drivers Opex Reduction Drivers Market Drivers POTS-ISDN- Mobile Services Fixed network Obsolescence Issues Fixed/mobile Infrastructure convergences New Services: IP Multimedia, IP TV, etc BB Accesses Service convergence: Videtelephony, messaging, etc IP Infrastructure Class 4/5 MM Services Replacement over BB access NGN/IMS Evolution 8
Telecom Italia NGN/IMS development phases Optical Tansport Network (OTN) and Optical Packet Backbone (OPB) for the national voice, data and video network Developed in National Backbone (BBN) for the Class 4 telephony services Developed in Fixed NGN/IMS multimedia platform for Videotelephony, VoIP and IP Centrex service: Developed in Mobile IMS Videosharing, POC, Messaging, Presence Developed in MMTEL developed in 2007-> Optical Packet Metro (OPM) network for 3play services and Node-B backauling Developed in HSDPA Developed in nd carrier developed in 2007-> NGN2 ADSL2 Network Developed in 2007-> 9
The IMS path IMS is motivated when an operator applies global BB IP network deployment strategy! The Fixed network IMS has a clear driver in the class 5 replacement The mobile IMS is still to be fully exploited, also due limitations in the mobile access resources (IMS always-on approach, PDP contecx usage, DTM scarce development, etc) The innovative IMS service offer is a driver but The porting on IMS of existing services is giving good results: (basic) MMTEL, LCS, presence, messaging, conferencing, etc, While the new services has experienced a limited success: Combinational service, PoC, VCC, etc 10
Fixed NGN offer IP TV Game Station PSTN Broadband Network Wi-Fi Laptop or desktop with Video over DSL Broadband LAN DECT Wi-Fi Video/MMS Phone on PSTN DECT Voice/MMS personal Phones on BB access WiFi Video/MMS personal Phones on BB access 11
