5 TISPAN is the home of NGN standards TISPAN is the ETSI body that specifies:- World Class Standards Standards for Fixed networks and internet convergence Developed the Convergence work Item (FMC) Specifies the Next Generation of Networks Provides the definition of the NGN principally from a European view but NOTE: Many of the participating organizations have their HQ s from outside of Europe TISPAN NGN specifications are referenced by the ITU-T and can be considered as THE global NGN solution Open area: 5

World Class Standards NGN-Release 1: (December 2005), defines the overall architecture including IMS re-use and other subsystems NGN-Release 2: (April 2008), builds upon Rel-1, adding in initial applications (Home gateway, IPTV, corporate networks) NGN Release 3: Work now beginning, at least 10 new work areas identified at last Plenary meeting 8

11 Next Steps (in Standards) World Class Standards As NGN networks are being rolled out and tested TISPAN is seeing a large increase in the number of corrections (CRs) to NGN-R1 and R2. This is a good sign. TISPAN (and ETSI) recognises the importance of cooperation agreements and is identifying key bodies and works together to avoid duplication of effort. TISPAN s members are now focused on Rel-2 completion and progressing new work areas for Rel-3. TEAM TISPAN is focused on enabling our customers to finally reach the next in NGN. 11

12 TISPAN Release 3 World Class Standards Early requirements for the next TISPAN Release include VoIP Consolidation (including QoS, security, interworking) IPTV Service evolution (blended services and beyond) Ultra Broadband (fixed and wireless) access to the NGN Interconnection (both IMS and non IMS) Network Harmonization - increase interoperability with other NGNs and other networks (non IMS). Working with ETSI Board, 3GPP and GSMA 12

16 Some Conclusions World Class Standards The market looks for standards based NGN solutions to avoid bespoke clients, proprietary solutions and interworking problems. Standards must be an enablerand not a barrier to NGN, and fragmentation of standards is not useful to industry. TISPAN are working together with other groups on developing and validating the standards to support tomorrows converged fixed and mobile high speed networks. TISPAN is an attractive place and a great group for all parties interested in NGN. TISPAN is the home of NGN standards. 16
