6 Which DVD Format/Burner/Media should I output on? Don t confuse devices DVD-RECORDER 4.7 GB Writes VIDEO directly into DVD discs - NOT used for DVD Video disc Authoring! DVD-BURNER 4.7 GB Write and rewrite DVD-R and/or DVD-RW discs, HIGHLY usable for DVD-Video disc Authoring. 6

11 What are my Audio Options?? Audio for DVD choices: Uncompressed, PCM (AIFF or WAV) or Compressed (AC3) PCM Audio File AC3 Audio File Lesser used formats: DTS, MPEG Audio (MPA) 11

12 AIFF files can be made into AC3 The A.PACK application will create Dolby Digital AC3 files to conserve space, and allow higher Video Encoding Rates, And making it possible to put more Audio programs onto your DVD (up to 8!!) AC3 does 5.1 Surround Sound Be aware that to create 5.1 surround sound streams, you need to start with a real surround MIX! It s not proper to just allocate Stereo files into a 5.1 encode - it doesn t work! 12

13 How do I avoid making Menu mistakes? DVD Menus are VIDEO screens Here s what s you need to beware of: - Pixel shape is wrong - Color saturation is wrong - Screen real estate is not all usable - Fonts need consideration - Graphics composition needs consideration - In other words, you re making TELEVISION, and not computer display screens 13

14 Photoshop has some rules Start at 720 x 540 pixels 72 DPI resolution RGB Color space Use Sans-Serif Fonts (like Arial) Avoid lines < 3 pixels width When possible, output your desktop to NTSC video to preview while composing! When finished composing: Shrink image to 720 x 480 Use Image Size Don t constrain proportions Save as PICT for easiest use. Compose properly Keep all live material inside Action Safe (5% - red zone) Keep all titles inside of Title Safe Zone (10% - black zone) Gray zone = go for it! You can build temp safe zones using Blue Grid lines. 14

15 Keep Black Colors to 16,16,16 Limit White to 235, 235,

16 Be sure to use Video filters! The NTSC Colors Filter will keep your RGB Photoshop colors within NTSC color limits. For DVD screen grabs: The De-Interlace filter will remove interlacing artifacts (ghost lines) from screen captures in DVD Studio Pro Default settings work well for casual de-interlacing. You may need to use the Unsharp Mask to add back sharpness lost with this filter. Using Layer Effects in DVDSP Live layer effects (called Layer Styles in Photoshop 6) will NOT be visible in DVD Studio Pro unless you render them into your layers while in Photoshop. Here s how they appear: Layers with live Layer Effects have a circle-f icon. These effects will NOT be visible in DVDSP until rendered. 16

17 Rendering Layer Effects To Render easily, create a new layer underneath the layer you need to merge. (Click on the layer below your target, and add a new empty layer) This will prepare the document for the Merge Down command. Merge Down will finish it Using the Merge Down command will merge the entire contents of the upper layer down onto the empty layer below, while also flattening the Type, and rendering all Layer Effects at the same time The end result will be a fully-effected and rendered layer that will perfectly display all those effects inside of DVD Studio Pro. 17

18 Merge Down results: This is the finished merged layer. Note the name. (Might be helpful to copy the name of your original layer so you can paste it back into the finished merge layer). You may also wish to Duplicate Layer prior to merging, to make editing easier (possible!) later on or in subsequent revisions. Keep the original layer asis. Summary 18
