2 PhenX Definitions DOMAIN: A topic area with a unifying theme Environmental Exposures MEASURE: A certain characteristic of, or related to, a study subject Air Contaminants in the Home Environment PROTOCOL: Standard procedure recommended by a Working Group to collect and record a PhenX measure Relationships of Indoor, Outdoor and Personal Air (RIOPA) Study Activity Questionnaire SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: Includes other protocols considered by the Working Group (not selected for the Toolkit) Lifetime Farm Exposure

3 More Definitions ESSENTIAL PROTOCOLS: other PhenX Toolkit protocols that are needed to interpret the results of the protocols of interest, such as age when measuring height or weight. RELATED PROTOCOLS: An additional PhenX protocols that the user may find helpful based on the selection of a particular PhenX protocol. Related PhenX protocols can include additional protocols that are needed to calculate a Derived Variable (e.g., Weight and Height are needed to calculate BMI), protocols that are commonly used in presentations and publications to present the value of the chosen protocol (e.g., Height and Weight by Race and Ethnicity), protocols that are conceptually related to the chosen protocol (e.g., Current Educational Attainment is conceptually related to Annual Family Income and Arm Span is conceptually related to Height), protocols that are physiologically and/or biologically related to the chosen protocol (e.g., Stroke and Heart Disease). 8 Using Advanced Search to find Protocols: How to use quotes (with Smart Search) Searching for current age with quotation marks will take you directly to the Protocol called, Current Age, when Smart Search is used. With quotations marks Searching for current age without quotation marks will return the Protocol called Current Age, plus over 120 other records, when Smart Search is used. Without quotations marks

10 Saving Protocols to My Toolkit From the search results: 1. Click checkboxes next to desired protocols 2. Select Add Selected to Toolkit button From the protocol page: 3. Select Add to My Toolkit button Protocols are available for download in up to 3 different languages and in multiple formats

11 While Essential Protocols are not required to be added to My Toolkit, they are critical to the collection of a selected Protocol or are necessary for the interpretation of results Add Essential Protocols via the link in the notification or from the dropdown menu The notification goes away after user has selected all Essential Protocols

12 All measurement protocols can be downloaded as a report and PDF. A report will contain details of the protocol such specific instructions and description of the protocol. It will also contain toolkit guidance information. Three additional resources are available. A Data Collection Worksheet (DCW) is a prototype data collection tool (in MS Word) for the PhenX protocol. It identifies and captures each data item required and collected by the protocol. A Data Dictionary (DD) lists each variable included in the protocol DCW and its attributes. Data dictionaries are available in two formats: 1) the Word format captures skip patterns commonly used in Epidemiology studies; 2) the CSV format is compatible with the database of Genotypes and Phenotypes (dbgap) data submission packet. REDCap instruments for each protocol are available for download.
