Alamance County leaders will feel inspired to further explore PiedmontHealthCounts.org and feel comfortable and confident when they do so. 2 How Do I Find Data about Demographics? Piedmont Health Counts pulls demographic information from the US Census, but displays it in an easyto-access format. 1. From the home page, go to Explore Data and click on Demographics 2. Click on the dropdown arrow next to Alamance and click This narrows down the search to 1 specific zip code 2

3 3. The blue tabs break down the demographics further to find data more specific to your topic. For example, click on the blue Education tab 4. Examine the information under the Education tab to answer the question below. Which level of Education Attainment has the greatest percentage in 27217? What percentage is it? Remember: You can toggle the geography to look at another county or zip code. You can click on each indicator for a deeper dive. 3

How Do I Find Data About the Topics that We Work On? There are two ways to search by topic. You can use the Community Dashboards, or do a keyword search. Community Dashboards method: 1.

From the home page, click on Community Data Dashboards on the right. 2. Scroll through the list of topics and click on any areas of interest; for example, Behavioral Health. This shows all the indicators that relate to this topic area. You can click on any indicator for more information. 4

5 3. For example, click on Adults Who Drink Excessively for Alamance County. 4. Examine this information to answer the questions below: Is our rate of adults who drink excessively trending upward or downward? Is the difference between our 2014 and 2015 rate statistically significant? 5

6 Keyword Search method: 1. From the home page, click on Community Data Dashboards on the right. 2. Type in a search term in the box that says Search by Keyword. In this example, type obesity. 6

7 3. Click on any of the indicators in this list for more information. Note that some of these indicators are upstream factors that cause obesity and some of them are downstream health conditions that often arise from obesity. After you clicked on one of these indicators, what did you learn about that topic? 7

8 How Do I Find Data About Disparities in our Community? 1. Go to Explore Data and click on Disparities Dashboard 2. You will notice that both Alamance and Guilford county disparities come up. Scroll down until you see the All Cancer Incidence Rate and click on County: Alamance. 8

9 3. Now you can see more specific data on the All Cancer Incidence Rate for only Alamance County. You can view the data by a specific subgroup, either gender and/or race/ethnicity. Check the Race/Ethnicity box and scroll down. 4. This allows you to see the data by subgroup and the significance of their values. 9

10 Based on the legend below the graphs, which demographic groups have a cancer incidence rate that is significantly different than the overall value? What are these colored icons that I keep seeing with the data? To see what all the icons mean: 1. Scroll back up to the top of the page and click the Show Legend tab on the left. 10

11 2. This tab shows you what every icon means and is usually available on every page to open when needed. To see what a specific icon under a section of data means: 1. Hover over the green Trend arrow. What does this green arrow indicate? 11

13 How do I search for data by age group? 1. From the home page, go to Explore Data, See How We Compare, and click on Compare Indicators. 2. Filter the location to your preference and filter the age group to what you are looking for. For example, Elderly. 13

14 3. Scroll down to the last topic: People 65+ Living Alone and click on the hyperlink. 4. Scroll down to see the map and click Census Tracts. 14

15 5. This shows you the data of the topic by census tract. You can scroll closer into the map to better see the data for Burlington. Of all the Alamance County census tracts, what is the highest percentage of people 65+ living alone? 6. Go back to the Compare Indicators page and filter the age group to Children. 15

16 7. Scroll down to the topic Children Living Below the Poverty Level and click on the hyperlink. 8. You can view the data by subgroup. Check the boxes for the subgroup(s) you would like to view. 16

From the home page, go to Explore Data, See How We Compare and Compare Indicators. 2. There is a blue v to the right of the box that says Filter by Locations. Click on the v and choose Alamance County Zip Codes. 17

4. Scroll down and click on Search. This produces a report with all indicators available at the zip code level. Scroll through this information to discover!

Which zip code has the highest percentage of residents 25+ with a Bachelor s degree? What percentage is it? What else do you find interesting in this search? Bonus: Do the same search with Alamance Census Tracts instead of zip codes. You ll be looking at a smaller geographic area, and the differences will be more noticeable. Try doing this search for the census tract(s) where your agency is located, and/or where your clients live. To figure out what census tract an address is, go to and enter your address. For example, 1240 Huffman Mill Rd (Alamance Regional) is in census tract You can enter those five digits (without decimals) in the location box in Piedmont Health Counts and it will locate the full name of the tract and put it in the box. Click search to see all available indicators for your census tract. 18
