6 Creating with Layers Number of layers that a document can have is limited only by computer memory Every Illustrator document is created with one layer, called Layer 1 Create new layers and move objects into them Chapter E 6

7 Understanding Sublayers The first object placed on Layer 1 is placed on a sublayer called <Path> Each additional object placed on the same layer is placed on a separate <Path> sublayer Chapter E 7

8 Viewing Layers On the Layers palette, a thumbnail identifies each layer Miniature picture of the objects on the layer Indicates Selected Art button for Chair layer Chapter E 8

9 Understanding Stacking Order Stacking order of objects on the artboard corresponds to the hierarchy of layers in the Layers palette Artwork in the top layer is at the front of the stacking order Hierarchy of sublayers corresponds to the stacking order of the objects within a single layer Chapter E 9

10 Creating Layers and Sub layers Click the New Layer or New Sublayer command in the Layers palette menu OR Click the Create New Layer or Create New Sublayer icon on the Layers palette Chapter E 10

11 Duplicating Layers Duplication Methods: Click the Duplicate command in the Layers menu Drag a layer or sublayer onto the Create New Layer icon on the Layer palette All the artwork on the layer is duplicated Chapter E 11

12 Layer Options Name a layer Set a color of a layer When an object is selected, its selection marks will be the same color as specified for the layer in which the object in included Chapter E 12

13 Layer Options Lock a layer All the objects on the layer are locked and protected Use the Toggles Lock icon to lock and unlock a layer Show a layer All the artwork that in the layer is displayed on the artboard Use the Toggles Visibility icon to hide and show layers Chapter E 13

18 Selecting Artwork on a Layer Use the Select All command to select every object on the artboard in one step Use the Indicates Selected Art icon to select all the artwork on a single layer or sublayer Chapter E 18

19 Changing Artwork Changes made to layers in the Layer palette affect artwork on those layers Delete a layer and all the artwork on the layer is deleted Duplicate a layer and all the artwork on a layer is duplicated Chapter E 19

20 Changing Layer Order Hierarchy of layers determines how objects on the artboard overlap Drag the layer up or down in the palette to change its position in the hierarchy Multiple objects within a layer overlap according to their stacking order Use the standard stacking order commands to reposition objects Chapter E 20

22 Merging Layers Select layers to merge Apply the Merge Selected command All the artwork from one or more layers is moved onto the layer that was last selected before the merge Chapter E 22

23 Condensing Layers Drag one layer into another layer The repositioned layer becomes a sublayer on the layer it was dragged into Chapter E 23

24 Defining Sublayers Each object on a layer is a sublayer If Layer 1 contains a circle and a square, then layer 1 has two sublayers: One layer for the square One layer for the circle A layer is the sum total of its sublayers Chapter E 24

25 Viewing Sublayers A triangle appears to the left of a layer name on the Layer palette to indicate that the layer contains sublayers Click the triangle to expand the layer and see the sublayers Chapter E 25

32 Locating an Object To identify the layer on which a specific object is located: Use the Locate Object command The layers expand to reveal sublayers and the selected object s layer or sublayer is selected Chapter E 32

33 Duplicating a Layer To duplicate a layer and it contents, drag it on top of the Create New Layer button Chapter E 33

34 Reversing Layer Order Reverse the order of layers to assist in the management of artwork Reverse Order method: Select the layers to reverse Click the Layers palette list arrow Click Reverse Order Chapter E 34

35 Making Layers Nonprintable Print specific parts of a document such as just the text layers or the layers containing specific objects Print layers containing different versions of a document: One version on each layer Chapter E 35

36 Working with Clipping Sets Term clipping set is used to distinguish clipping paths used in layers from clipping paths used to mask non layered artwork. Chapter E 36

37 Clipping Set Rules The clipping mask and the objects to be masked must be in the same layer Cannot use a sublayer as a clipping mask unless it is a <Group> sublayer The top object in the clipping set becomes the mask for every object below it in the layer Chapter E 37

38 Clipping Set Rules A <Group> sublayer can be a clipping set: The top object in the group will function as the mask Dotted lines between sublayers indicate that they are included in a clipping set Chapter E 38

39 Creating a Clipping Set The rectangle is placed on the new sublayer called <Path> on top of the other sublayers in the foreground layer. Chapter E 39
