2 1. Overview This "information" file contains a description of Modbus TCP/IP library software. The Modbus TCP/IP library software may be used to send/receive data to/from any Acromag Ethernet Modbus TCP/IP supported product. 2. Introduction The software for the Modbus TCP/IP library software is implemented as a library of "C" functions. This will make it possible to utilize Acromag's Ethernet Modbus TCP/IP products by simply linking the user's code with the provided function calls. Most of the function calls will require a few parameters to be passed. The parameters will include the IP address, Modbus register address, and Modbus register count. These functions accomplish the following tasks: - Read slave I.D. - Read/write coils - Read/write input/output registers - Read/write holding registers 3. List of Files for Various Operating Systems The library software for Acromag's Modbus TCP/IP products are supplied for each operating system in a correspondingly named subdirectory. The Linux version of the Modbus TCP/IP library software files are stored in the subdirectory named "Linux". Source and project files are provided for the Microsoft version. 4. Usage of the Library and Demonstration Program The software is installed by simply copying the files to the user's work directory and compiling and linking with the user's application program. It is recommended that the user read the User's Manual for the Acromag product and thoroughly familiarize themselves with the hardware. For a new user to become familiar with the Acromag demonstration software for Ethernet Modbus TCP/IP products it may be most "straight forward" to proceed in the following manner: Page 2

3 1 (a) Microsoft version Copy the Library routines from the "Microsoft" directory of the source media to a project work directory. Open the project file then from the Build dropdown select 'Build All'. Then execute. (b) VxWorks version Copy the Library routines from the "VxWorks" directory of the source media to a new directory under.\target\src\vxw. Open a new project workspace. Select 'Create downloadable application modules for VxWorks'. Change project name to 'mbtcpip', change the project location name to 'mbtcpip' and change the workspace name to 'mbtcpip'. Select a toolchain that corresponds to the target under development. Next, from the Project dropdown select 'Add/Include' then 'File'. Use the navigation controls to locate the vxw library directory. Highlight and add all of the 'C' source files to the project. From the Build dropdown select 'Build All'. From the 'Files' tab of the Project workspace right click and select Download mbtcpip.out. Launch the VxWorks shell, use the lkup "drvrmbtcpip" command to locate the entry point of the demonstration program on the target. Use the sp 0xZZZZ command ( where ZZZZ is the entry point ) to spawn the Demonstration program. (c) Other Operating Systems use the makefile supplied, then execute. (d) The Acromag Demonstration program menu should appear on the console terminal. Page 3

Select 4: To set the Modbus register count. Select 5: To issue report slave I.D. command. Select 6: To read output status registers. Select 7: To read input status registers Select 8: To force single coil Select 9: To force multiple coils Select 10: To read output registers. Select 11: To read input registers Select 12: To preset single register Select 13: To preset multiple registers exmbtcpip.c - This program is menu driven and allows the user to become familiar with Acromag TCP/IP products. The user may, through menu selections, configure, read from and write to the Acromag Ethernet Modbus TCP/IP product. Page 4

5 3 The user may also leverage this simple demonstration application into a tool for configuration or test by supplying commands and/or data values in the form of a text file. Any simple text editor may be used to generate the text file. The contents of the text file can be redirected to "stdin" of the modbus TCP/IP demo software. The command line to do this would be "exmbtcpip.exe <script.txt". This will cause the modbus TCP/IP demo software to execute each command in the text file as if it had been typed from the console terminal. The following command sequences set the IP address, issue a Report Slave I.D. command and exit the demo software y Other text files could contain multiple commands and data values. The following command sequences set the IP address, issues a set address register to 0, set the count register to 4, issue a force multiple coils command with the four supplied data values and then exit the demo software.
