It can measure water level (pressure), temperature, barometric pressure and water quality data, to name a few. The AquaTroll 600 can be integrated with Canary System's MLSuite, allowing for automated data acquisition. The Canary Systems MLDAQ-WD includes an RE Smith signal converter capable of converting the AquaTroll RS485 output to RS232, and a Campbell Scientific CR1000 datalogger. This Sensor Application Note covers the setup of a single probe on the datalogger. Contact Canary Systems if your application requires multiple probes per datalogger. (Figure 1 The In-Situ AquaTroll 600) Related documentation: The AquaTROLL 600 Operator's Manual specifies installation and calibration of the instrument. The MultiLogger Software User's Guide details the use of MultiLogger and its features. AquaTroll is a registered trademark of In-Situ Inc. 2 System Wiring and Configuration A converter is typically required to convert the RS-485 output of the AquaTroll to RS-232. The example wiring in Figure 2 outlines connecting an AquaTroll to a Campbell Scientific CR1000 using the RSCOM2A converter from RE Smith. The RSCOM2A provides a low-cost, highly configurable signal converter. (Figure 2 Connecting an AquaTroll to a CR1000 using the RSCOM2A) AquaTroll 600 Configuration and MultiLogger Integration 2
Function Test Once wiring is complete, functionality of AquaTroll sensors should be tested by connecting them directly to a PC (e.g. with a TrollCOM USB adapter). Install the Win-Situ 5 Plus software from the software disc included with the AquaTroll sensor. Once installed, verification of the readout from the sensor, and Modbus configurations should be performed. If a multi-drop Modbus installation is necessary, some additional configuration of the Modbus settings is required. (Figure 3 Select No after launching Win-Situ) After launching the Win-Situ software, the above dialog box should appear. Select No. (Figure 4 The Communication Settings dialog of Win-Situ) The Communication Settings dialog box should appear next. Once configuration for the chosen method of communications is set, the device address can be found by selecting Search For Devices. After all settings are completed, select the check mark button in the bottom right-hand corner. AquaTroll 600 Configuration and MultiLogger Integration 3
(Figure 5 The configuration tab of the Win-Situ data monitoring window) The main data monitoring window should appear, with the AquaTroll model and serial number displayed. To verify the AquaTroll serial communications settings, and/or to configure for multi-drop Modbus, select the configuration tab. (Figure 6 AquaTroll settings and status in the configuration tab, Modbus Setup button highlighted) The above should be displayed in the main window. If device status appears to be OK, select Modbus Setup. AquaTroll 600 Configuration and MultiLogger Integration 4
This will bring up the Serial Communication Settings window. Verify that the settings match the settings above. If using multiple sensors on one station, assign the device addresses (from 1 to 4) in the Device Address box, and set the baud rate to Select the check mark icon in the bottom right when complete. (Figure 7 The Serial Communication Settings window, where Device Address and baud rate can be set) The AquaTroll is now ready for MultiLogger integration. See the following section. AquaTroll 600 Configuration and MultiLogger Integration 5
MultiLogger Configuration The steps below are necessary for establishing communications between the AquaTroll and MLSuite and collecting data: 1. Connect the AquaTroll's datalogger to the network. 2. Configure the AquaTroll sensors. 3. Configure data collection and enable automatic database import. Refer to the MultiLogger Software User's Guide for more information on MultiLogger. Connect the AquaTroll to the MultiLogger Network In order to add the AquaTroll to the network, a node representing the datalogger it is connected to must be added to the network tree within MultiLogger. From the initial Network Manager form of MultiLogger, press Add and add a Gateway to the network tree, then save changes, or select an existing Gateway. (Figure 8 A blank MultiLogger Network Manager configuration after adding a Gateway, Add button highlighted) AquaTroll 600 Configuration and MultiLogger Integration 6
Next, add a TCP/IP Socket and name it as necessary. Save the changes. (Figure 9 The new Socket added to the Gateway in MultiLogger) Left-click on the TCP/IP socket so that it is selected, press Add and select the datalogger model that the AquaTroll is connected to. Check the inside of the MLDAQ to confirm the model. This example uses a CR1000 from the Campbell Current Loggers group. Press Accept. (Figure 10 Selecting a CR1000 datalogger from the Add new Gateway or Device form) AquaTroll 600 Configuration and MultiLogger Integration 7
A prompt will display for selecting the Logger Configuration File. Select Assign a new Configuration File and press Accept. (Figure 11 Assigning a new Logger Configuration File to the CR1000 datalogger) A datalogger node will be added to the tree. Select the device, and it can be renamed by slow double-clicking its node. When selected, open the Settings tab to enter the IP address and TCP port number of the device. An example is shown in Figure 12 below. Save the configuration. (Figure 12 Updating the IP address of the AquaTroll with that of the installed and configured WiFi adapter) The AquaTroll sensors can now be configured. AquaTroll 600 Configuration and MultiLogger Integration 8
Configure the AquaTroll Sensors Once the AquaTroll is configured on the network, its sensors can be configured. This is done through the MultiLogger Logger form, which is opened by selecting the Logger icon at the top of the MultiLogger Network Manager screen, as shown in Figure 13: (Figure 13 The location of the Logger form icon in the MultiLogger Network Manager screen) From the Program tab of the Logger form, click the Direct Connect button. This opens the Configure Direct Connect Channels form, as shown in Figure 14. Each AquaTroll sensor is represented by a channel, each of which can be configured from this form. (Figure 14 The Direct Connect button in the Logger form Program tab) AquaTroll 600 Configuration and MultiLogger Integration 9
Initially, the form displays options for the first channel. Note the CHANNEL selector on the left of the form, from which the channel being configured can be selected. (Figure 15 The Configure Direct Connect Channels form, with a Depth sensor configured for channel 1) When configuring channels, Digital must be selected as the Gage Type in the Measurements group, and In- Situ must be selected as Make. Once Gage Type and Make have been set, an option can be selected from the Model drop-down that represents the specific sensor being configured. A complete list of AquaTroll sensors and their associated Model selection is available below: ModBus COM1 Actual Conductivity ModBus COM1 Barometric Pressure ModBus COM1 Density of Water ModBus COM1 Depth ModBus COM1 External Battery ModBus COM1 ORP mv ModBus COM1 Percent Battery ModBus COM1 ph ModBus COM1 ph mv ModBus COM1 Pressure ModBus COM1 Resistivity ModBus COM1 Salinity ModBus COM1 Specific Conductivity ModBus COM1 Surface Elevation ModBus COM1 Temperature ModBus COM1 Total Dissolved Solids Configure the Units Conversion, if desired.
