4 Migration Background QSS/OASIS is being migrated from HP e3000 platform to new server platforms User Interface is being retooled from traditional terminal style to graphical windows style Migrating to industry standard SQL compliant RDBMS (Relational Database Management System) 2

5 New Server Platforms Application server can be Linux or HP-UX/rp Web server can be Linux or HP-UX/rp Database Server can be Linux, HP-UX/rp/rx, or Windows Server (64 bit / 32 bit) Support for both Red Hat Linux and Novell SuSE distributions Server based distributions, for example: RH Advanced Server, Enterprise Server, SuSE Enterprise Server Support for PostgreSQL, MS SQL Server, Sybase ASE, and Oracle 10g database servers 3

6 Server Platform Discussion QSS choices in server topology give customers the option to scale servers up or out and to mix and match operating systems and environments Scale up is when you use a single server that you continue to upgrade to handle all your server needs Scale out is when you deploy multiple servers of smaller size, each configured to handle a particular set of tasks 4

8 Key Considerations PostgreSQL, Sybase ASE, Oracle 10g can be placed on a HP-UX or Linux server MS SQL Server requires a commodity server (Intel/AMD) with Windows Server O/S Flexibility in topology is an advantage, but don t let it force you to acquire too many servers QSS recommends Linux and cautions customers from considering HP-UX 6

9 HP-UX Server Considerations rp servers are PA-RISC chip based, rx servers are Itanium chip based rp server supported as QSS/OASIS app server rp or rx server ok for PostgreSQL, Sybase ASE, Oracle 10g HP is not selling rp servers so QSS wouldn t recommend HP-UX for application server 7

10 Linux Server Considerations Intel XEON, Itanium, and AMD Opteron based systems are designed to work well in large memory configurations since they can address > 4gb memory Choose XEON or AMD/Opteron for app server All 3 good choices for database server All but very small customers should get at least a 2 cpu system Newest XEON/Opteron servers are quad-core (some 6-core) which provide more bang for the buck. 8

11 Linux Server Considerations (cont.) Scale up servers should have at least 8 gb memory. Larger Scale up customers should consider 4 cpu servers with gb memory Scale out should match the memory size by function. Each server should be 2 cpu with minimum 6-8gb for app server, 6-8gb for database server. Larger customers should consider increasing memory to 32gb for the database server 9

12 Windows Server Considerations Intel XEON, Itanium, and AMD/Opteron based systems are designed to work well in large memory configurations since they can address > 4gb memory Server clustering can give you growth/performance flexibility Minimum server should be 2 cpu Consult with MS or Oracle for sizing based on expected database connections (we can help you get resources for this) 10
