6 Connect for Speech Connect for Speech is a dedicated speech generating device that leverages the power and familiarity of popular augmentative and alternative communication programs to provide an extraordinary communication experience for the user. Flexibility Although Connect for Speech is a locked dedicated speech generating device, it does offer flexibility so that it can be prescribed to meet the needs of a variety of users. Before Connect for Speech is delivered to the user, it is configured by AbleNet with an augmentative and alternative communication program prescribed by the Speech-Language Pathologist. This customization offers flexibility to accommodate the needs of users with a variety of communication impairments, language abilities, and access needs. Accessibility Connect for Speech addresses accessibility in multiple ways. For users with fine motor skills, the interactive multi-touch display can be used with direct touch to quickly produce speech. For users that are unable to use their hands or other parts of their body to access the multitouch display, Connect for Speech offers access through the use of one or two external switches along with on-screen scanning. A variety of on-screen scanning methods include single switch, auto scanning, two switch step scanning, and more. No other programs can be loaded, and access to the internet, cell technology, or other common tablet features is disabled. Connect for Speech Unlocked Connect for Speech may be funded in an unlocked mode where permitted. In this configuration it arrives with the communication program of choice loaded, as well as providing users with the ability to add programs of their choice (using their own Apple ID), access the internet, and many other features typically available using tablet technology. In cases where unlocking is permitted, clinicians may specify the degree to which they would like access to other features or programs, since some users will thrive with full access to the device while others benefit from only limited access. 6
