8 Release 8.96 Value Proposition Release 8.96 focuses on new web client capabilities, performance, expanded platform support, and application-driven enhancements. In addition to the normal process of including accumulated bug fixes, we have added new features to help you run your business more efficiently and profitably. This document describes the new features and benefits of the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne tools for release Further information on all of the new features described in these Release Notes can be found in the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne guides. General availability and upgrade availability information for EnterpriseOne Release 8.96 can be found on Oracle Customer Connection from the Oracle JD Edwards Support section. Release 8.96 is focused on the following key areas: Platform and Oracle Fusion Middleware. Client Tool Changes. Lifecycle Management Changes. Foundation Changes. Runtime Changes. Platform and Oracle Fusion Middleware Platform and Oracle Fusion Middleware includes a number of key enterprise components completely integrated that provide comprehensive technical capabilities for business needs. This tight integration and operational monitoring delivers the lowest total cost of ownership in the industry. Beginning with JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Tools 8.95 and continuing to JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Tools 8.96, customers have the option of adopting Oracle Application Server 10g, Oracle Portal 10g, and Oracle Database 10g as alternatives to IBM WebSphere, IBM WebSphere Collaborative portal, and IBM DB2 Universal Database. To be clear, these new Oracle platform options represent a choice. This in no way represents an obsolescence of other platform alternatives. These new choices allow customers to acquire business applications, middleware, and a database management system from a single vendor, while still being able to choose the hardware and operating system that best suits their requirements. These enhancements include: Hosted Portlet Removal. IBM WebSphere Application Server 6.0 Support and WebSphere Portal 5.1 Support. XML Publisher for JD Edwards EnterpriseOne. 9 Hosted Portlet Removal The JD Edwards OneWorld Portal, including hosted portlets that are viewed through the Collaborative Portal, is disabled for systems using JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Applications 8.10 and later releases. The OneWorld Portal and hosted portlets remain available for JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Applications 8.9 and earlier releases. Additionally, it is now possible for OneWorld Portlets to be displayed in the EnterpriseOne Collaborative Portal and the Oracle Portal. See JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Portlets for Oracle Portal in this document for more details. IBM WebSphere Application Server 6.0 Support and IBM WebSphere Portal 5.1 Support JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Tools 8.96 supports IBM WebSphere Application Server 6.0 and IBM WebSphere Portal All of the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne products that were supported in the 8.95 release are supported in the 8.96 release on the following platforms: Solaris 9 and Solaris 10 HP-UX 11i AIX 5.3 Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Red Hat Enterprise Linux v.3 IBM i5/os V5R3 and V5R4 In September 2006, IBM will withdraw support for IBM WebSphere Application Server and IBM WebSphere Portal 5.1.1; Oracle will withdraw support for these products with JD Edwards EnterpriseOne as well. Customers are encouraged to plan an upgrade to a supported web application server and portal. This path and link are one example: Navigation: Customer Connection > Implement, Optimize + Upgrade > Optimization Guide > Supported Platforms > EnterpriseOne XML Publisher for JD Edwards EnterpriseOne XML Publisher for JD Edwards EnterpriseOne is a Java-based reporting technology that provides a separation of data and layout. This enables application data to be reused and formatted into multiple layouts and output formats. This enhancement enables end users to use standard desktop tools (such as Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat) to design templates. It also enables users to download government-supplied PDF form templates. Users can then apply these templates to their application data to publish PDF documents, Microsoft Word documents, Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, and Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). Page 3

JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Portlets for Oracle Portal Administrators and end users can set up viewable and configurable portlets in both the Oracle Portal and the Collaborative Portal for these types of JD Edwards EnterpriseOne portlets: Portlet Type Isolated URI (IURI) URI HTML SRM Description This type of portlet is the most flexible because it is not actually integrated into the Portal. IURI portlets allow you to fully access the browser frame and to take existing web content and display it in the Portal. This type of portlet always requires interaction between the portal and a web server. URI portlets can be written as CGI, Java servlets, or HTML pages; they can reside on a server other than the portal server. URI portlets tend to be slower than the other portlets. This type of portlet requires no interaction with an external server, so it provides quick response with very little external resource load. HTML portlets can contain references to applets, ActiveX controls, and images, but the HTML is taken directly from the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne database, so the content is static. You can take advantage of pass-through functions, such as RunOWApp and addrunowappfi with HTML portlets as well. These functions enable you to launch JD Edwards EnterpriseOne applications. This portlet provides a fully configurable shell portlet that you can modify without Java programming. You can select the queries to display in the portlet at runtime using a wizard interface. It is up to the portal administrator to control access to the configurable portlets. Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 3.0 Support JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Tools 8.96 supports Red Hat Enterprise Linux v.3 Update 5 on 32-bit x86 hardware. 11 Client Tools JD Edwards EnterpriseOne users have diverse needs. To keep operational decisions aligned with their long-term strategy, it is important that these decisions provide each client with the specific tools they require. Product changes in this area are: Crystal Table Join Performance. Design Time Performance Improvements. Event Rule Error Line Number. Virtual Autopilot. Crystal Table Join Performance To provide better performance for Crystal Reports, complex table data can be joined together on the database server rather than requiring that the Crystal Data Adapter join the table data together in memory. Using the Crystal Data Adapter to join together table data in memory is still supported. Design Time Performance Improvements The startup time for Form Design Aid (FDA), between the opening of the dialog and actually starting the first form, has been reduced. FDA separates the Event Rule validation operation from the Save operation. An application developer can save multiple times before running the Event Rule validation operation. If changes have been made, FDA automatically validates event rules upon exiting. Event Rule Error Line Number This project enhances the Event Rule error information that is displayed to a user of the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne web client. Event Rule error information that is displayed includes the originating form, control, event, and the Event Rule line number that was being executed at the time of the error. This added error information helps users and application developers locate the source of the displayed error. Virtual Autopilot Virtual Autopilot requires a Microsoft Windows client. You can use Virtual Autopilot with JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Tools 8.96 and JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Applications 8.10 and prior Applications releases. You cannot use Virtual Autopilot with JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Applications 8.11 and later releases, as these releases are on a web client only. Page 5

12 Lifecycle Management JD Edwards EnterpriseOne uses technology to provide the industry's best Total Ownership Experience, simplifying the management of your entire enterprise application lifecycle: implementing, using, and maintaining. Enhancements include: Auditing Administration Improvements. Change Assistant Defect Source Query. Change Assistant Improvements and Direct Upgrade to EnterpriseOne Media Object Security. Metadata Stored in the Database. Platform-Independent Metadata. Dynamic Web Generation. Security Audit Report. User-Level Performance Monitoring. Web Client Access to Administrative Applications. Web Server Automatic Package Discovery. Auditing Administration Improvements This project enhances existing functionality within JD Edwards EnterpriseOne auditing capabilities, which includes features that help companies comply with the FDA 21 CFR part 11 regulation. This release addresses these customer requests: Multiple JD Edwards EnterpriseOne users can simultaneously view 21 CFR audit information from a web browser-based client within a JD Edwards EnterpriseOne web environment. JD Edwards EnterpriseOne users who track 21 CFR audit changes can run a batch job to remove uncommitted audit records within the application. JD Edwards EnterpriseOne users who use 21CFR auditing can attach media objects within the signature application. The 21CFR audit reporting and inquiry applications run on the web client. Change Assistant Defect Source Query This is an enhancement to the query functionality in Change Assistant. This enhancement permits customers to easily identify high-priority ESUs, such as those that are performance related (PER) or that address memory leaks (MEM). Page 6

13 Change Assistant Improvements and Direct Upgrade to JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 8.12 This enhancement facilitates and expedites the process of becoming "fix current" during the install, update, and upgrade processes. The enhancements to Change Assistant enable the application of large numbers (that is, hundreds) of ESUs in an efficient, unattended manner. This functionality is especially useful in an upgrade or update scenario where customers are required to apply a high number of ESUs to reach a "fix-current" state (for example, applying all of the ESUs published since the GA date of the release). Note. This enhancement is particularly important for all types of installation, update, or upgrade scenarios in releases after 8.11 SP1. Media Object Security When adding attachments to a transaction, the attachments (for example, a Microsoft Word document, a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet,.gif files) are often a supporting document that should never be changed, even by the person who originally attached it. This enhancement allows an attachment to be permanently attached to a transaction. The enhancement also prevents modification or deletion of the attachment after the transaction is committed. Metadata Stored in the Database With Tools release 8.96, JD Edwards EnterpriseOne stores metadata in the database along with other system data. Storing the metadata in the database improves the concurrency control of the metadata and minimizes specification file related issues. In addition, the enterprise server and the web server can share the same sets of metadata (spec) records. This configuration, called shared objects configuration, prevents the mismatch of web server and enterprise server specs. Platform-Independent Metadata Prior to Release 8.96, JD Edwards EnterpriseOne stored application information in a set of binary files, referred to as specification files. These files contain the application metadata in a Table Access Method (TAM) format. TAM is a platform-dependent format and is represented differently on each of the different platforms supported by JD Edwards EnterpriseOne. This adds complexity to the development and deployment of JD Edwards EnterpriseOne applications. In Tools release 8.96 when used in conjunction with JD Edwards EnterpriseOne release 8.12, all JD Edwards EnterpriseOne specifications are converted to XML. In contrast to TAM, the XML format is a standards based, simple text format that is widely used and is platform independent. By moving the specification files to XML, we achieve these benefits: Reduction in the number of steps required to create a package build in a crossplatform environment. Page 7

14 Improved, more robust Web Generation code that is platform independent providing the capability of on-the-fly generation directly on the web server. Specification files that are no longer tied to the evolution of each platform s operating system. Ease of implementation and upgrade into any future framework. Compressed XML specification files are more than 50 percent smaller than the equivalent TAM files. Dynamic Web Generation Moving the metadata to an XML format provides the capability for the system to dynamically generate Java objects when a web client accesses a JD Edwards EnterpriseOne application for the first time. JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Applications release 8.12 offers the options of dynamic web generation in addition to the current manual generation of Java objects from specification files. If you choose dynamic web generation, the system automatically checks for serialized objects, generates the objects that are not found, and stores the information as native Java objects. Once an object is generated, it is cached in memory and database tables. When the system dynamically generates Java objects from specification files, the user might experience a delay when an application object is first accessed. To minimize performance degradation for the user, you can manually generate the Java objects. The dynamic web generation enhancement provides flexibility by enabling you to manually generate Java objects for frequently used applications and leaving less frequently used applications for dynamic generation. With dynamic web generation, the web generator can generate serialized objects using specifications stored in remote database tables; therefore, this process does not require a JD Edwards EnterpriseOne client. However, the manual generation process still requires a JD Edwards EnterpriseOne client. Security Audit Report The Security Audit Report enables customers to identify users who have access to JD Edwards EnterpriseOne applications, UBEs, and tables. Customers also can view the access level that is granted to the user ID or role. This report can be filtered by an object, system code, or object type for any user or role combination. You can use processing options and data selection to customize the output of the reports. User-Level Performance Monitoring In the 8.96 release, several improvements were made to the Performance Monitor, including the ability to monitor performance on a more granular level (that is, a user-by-user basis). 15 Web Client Access to Administrative Applications In releases prior to 8.11, a Microsoft Windows client was required to run the majority of the administrative applications (for example, Security Workbench). With 8.96, many of these applications are redesigned to run in a browser, enabling system administrators with more alternatives for the management (that is, remote and ad-hoc capabilities) of their environments. These administrative applications are also still accessible from a Microsoft Windows client. Web Server Automatic Package Discovery With release 8.96, package deployment is significantly simplified. Prior to 8.96, you needed to build client and server packages, install the client package on the generation machine, pregenerate the serialized objects contained in the package, and then deploy the package to enterprise servers. With release 8.96, all you need to do is build the client and server packages and then deploy to enterprise servers. EnterpriseOne web servers automatically discover a package deployment and delete the impacted serialized objects. For an update package, only the objects included in the package are deleted. These objects are generated on the fly by the first user who accesses the object. Also, pregeneration is a supported option. Foundation JD Edwards EnterpriseOne software provides a flexible, configurable solution in the face of constantly changing technology and enterprise practices. JD Edwards EnterpriseOne software was the first enterprise-class business application software to separate business rules from the presentation and data layers. As new technologies emerge, JD Edwards EnterpriseOne software is flexible enough to add many of them to the framework of your enterprise. Enhancements include: Hyperlink and Button Security. 16 Hyperlink and Button Security Within Security Workbench, you can now secure users from viewing and using buttons, images, and links on JD Edwards EnterpriseOne applications. With this release, JD Edwards EnterpriseOne security provides a user interface that administrators can use to hide, display, enable, and disable buttons, images, and links. Integration Options Migration Utility JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Tools Web Services Gateway (WSG) Configuration Editor (CE) is an integration tool used to add, modify, and delete cross-referencing keys and crossreferencing codes and to load and create integration options instead of using literals in integrations. With the 8.96 release, an integration developer or customer can move integration options from one folder or flow to another folder or flow without changing the values for the cross-reference keys and codes. JMS Topic to Manage JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Events The JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Transaction Server now supports JMS topic to act as a subscriber to JD Edwards EnterpriseOne events. This enhancement allows JMS topic to receive events from the Transaction Server by environment and further manage those subscriptions within the J2EE environment. Last Changed Information for Media Objects With this enhancement, audit information (such as who changed a media object most recently and when the most recent change occurred) is available for the web client. Oracle Rebranding Oracle's JD Edwards EnterpriseOne user interfaces (Microsoft Windows client, web client, Collaborative Portal, Web Services Gateway) display the Oracle brand name. The Oracle name appears on image items (such as login screens, logos, splash screens) and text items (such as browser titles, legal information, copyright information). Runtime JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Tools is the runtime architecture and integrated development environment. Significant enhancements have been made to the runtime layer of JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Tools in the 8.96 release. Enhancements include: Batch Process Security. Conditional Auditing. Custom Grid Format Improvements. Electronic Signature Support for Powerforms. Grid Control Improvements. Page 10

Batch Process Security When the runube command is used to submit reports in a UNIX or iseries environment, users with access to the system can view the command line while it is running. Since a password is supplied as part of the runube command, this means that those users can potentially view the password being used. The Batch Process Security enhancement provides these solutions to this situation: Define the command to prompt the user for a user ID and password. Create a text file that includes the user ID and password. Although the previous runube security concerns applied only to Unix and iseries, the new prompting and password text file functionality can be used on any server platform, including Microsoft Windows. Conditional Auditing JD Edwards EnterpriseOne auditing capability enables administrators to specify columns in a table that when changed, trigger an audit record. Prior to release 8.96, any change to the marked table column triggered an audit record. With this enhancement, administrators can select additional columns to be recorded along with the columns marked for auditing. These additional columns do not trigger an audit, but the columns and their data are displayed in the audit table along with the columns marked for auditing. For example, you have a product that goes through several checkpoint statuses concept, in work, and final. You want to create an audit trail only when the product goes to a new checkpoint status. However, you want to include additional information in the audit trail regarding other changes to the table when the checkpoint status is changed. You can mark the Checkpoint Status column as the trigger, and you can mark the other columns as informational for the audit trail. Custom Grid Format Improvements JD Edwards EnterpriseOne has long had the ability to customize a grid to show only those columns of interest. This not only helps users by eliminating unnecessary information but it also improves performance since the system displays less information. Prior to the 8.96 release, users could not customize grids that contained hierarchical trees. This enhancement enables users to customize the columns on a grid that contains a hierarchical tree; however, the first column, which controls the hierarchical tree, will always be visible in customized grids. 18 Electronic Signature Support for Powerforms This enhancement allows 21 CFR Part 11 functionality, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, to be used with recently added form types. In addition to previously available form types, the following additional form types may be set up for signature confirmation: PB - Power Browse PE - Power Edit RB - Re-Usable Browse Subforms RE - Re-Usable Edit Subforms Grid Control Improvements With Tools 8.96, applications can now place icons in grids and optionally attach an action that is executed when a user clicks the icon. Prior to the 8.96 release, grid values were limited to plain text only. This enhancement allows application developers to add icons to a grid for usability. For example, an application developer can add a print icon to a row to indicate that the contents of the row can be printed. Item Help The Microsoft Windows client allows the user to right-click on an item to show the data dictionary alias. With the 8.96 release, this capability is available on the web client. In addition, the web client help feature provides information, such as: Whether the item is part of a business view or data dictionary item within the application. If the item is part of a business view, the system displays the associated table. Pervasive Device Support Beginning with JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Tools 8.96, customers can access JD Edwards EnterpriseOne applications through a web client on Pocket PC devices running Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition. Although the base EnterpriseOne 8.12 applications were not designed to run on a PocketPC device, customers can use the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne toolset to write custom applications, and then run them on a Pocket PC device or emulator. 19 Print Immediate by Version This enhancement enables the print immediate option to be defined in the batch version properties so that every time a specific batch version is processed, it prints immediately. Before this enhancement, the print immediate flag was available only at the jde.ini level, which meant that all versions of every batch application were affected by the print immediate setting. Often it is desired that some versions print immediately. For instance, you may want only final versions of a batch application to be immediately printed for an order to be filled. This enhancement allows customers to have more control of the print immediate operation by allowing it to be specified at the version level instead of the jde.ini level. Subform Event Improvements Two new events are provided to control Event Rule program flow code. These events enable the programmer to change the flow when the user either sets the focus to or removes the focus from a subform control. The new events are: subform Enter Focus Event subform Leave Focus Event Web Client Logging Improvements Logging capabilities for the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne web client include an improved logging format and an improved user interface for viewing the web system log files. With this enhancement, consumers of web system log files (System Administrators, CNC consultants, application developers, and consultants) have: An easier setup of logging on the web system. The ability to log actions for a single system user. The ability to set up and view logs by level. Color-coding of log file messages by level. The ability to dynamically change these levels while live. Improved error message content with more intuitive messages. The ability to browse and load a log file for viewing. Better management of log viewing in clustered web server systems. Page 13
