3 Removal of NPAPI support Chrome, Fire Fox and Internet Explorer no longer support the use of NPAPI What this means for Notes/Domino applications? The Domino Web Administrator will no longer work The Domino Java Applets for RichText, Outlines, Views and Action bars will no longer function IBM Corporation 3

4 Techniques for replacing applets Use HTML JavaScript can be used for the RichText applet in addition to HTML Use XPages to retain same robustness as the Java applets TN - Using XPages as an alternative to Domino applets 2017 IBM Corporation 4

5 XPages vs Applets The XPage navigator control from the from the extension library can be used in place of the outline applet The navigator control allows us to specify labels to be displayed to the users and links that will be launched when clicked, just like the Outline applet did. The XPage RichText core control can be used in place of the RichText applet By default the RichText control uses the JavaScript CKEditor to allow the user to input Richtext. This RichText control is bound to a RichText field in the document IBM Corporation 5

6 XPages vs Applets(2) The extension library Data View control can be used to replace the View applet A view in the application is bound to the Data View control. There are several properties that can be set on the Data View to determine how the data in the view will be displayed. The XPage Button Core Control can replace the Action Bar applet. Using the Button control gives the option of performing a set of simple actions or performing more complex actions using server side JavaScript IBM Corporation 6

7 Locating design elements using applets No built in tools to tell what is using the applets An agent can be used to examine all the DBs on the server looking for design elements using any of the Domino applets I wrote a TN that has an example agent for doing this and the link for it is located with the resources. What this agent does Checks all the forms for use of the RichText, View, Action Bar and Outline applets Checks all subforms for use of the RichText, View and Outline applets 2017 IBM Corporation 7

8 Locating design elements using applets(2) What this agent does (cont) It checks all views for use of the View or Action Bar It checks all the pages for use of the Outline or Action Bar It converts all of these design elements to DXL and then searches the DXL to see if any of the applets are in use It can provide the results in an or in a CSV file or both While this agent will find design elements using applets, it can not tell if the application is actually being accessed via the web. The agent is designed so that it can run on schedule on the server or manually from a Notes client IBM Corporation 8

9 Customizing the agent for your environment The agent should be signed by or executed by an ID that has access to all the applications on the server Populate the sserver variable to be the name of the server we want to run the agent against If we want the results sent in form we need to: Set the variable bsend = True Provide a valid address to the variable s address If we want the results written to a CSV file we need to: Set the variable bwritetofile =True Set the variable soutputfilename to be the path the file to write 2017 IBM Corporation 9

39 Other notable drawbacks to removal of NPAPI support for modern browsers - Inability to use IBM Download Director for downloading Connections or integrated solution fixes from Fix Central. Download Director is a Java applet that provides enhanced download capability to IBM customers who download our products from the internet. It provides high-performance, reliable downloads with pause and resume capability. It starts in a separate browser window and provides a graphical user interface (GUI) to specify the download location, and view download status.
