5 Why should YOU care about R? It is free! It s expandable! You can contribute! You need it to analyze data in Lab sessions, homework assignments, and poster presentation. Google, Merck, Bank of America, Shell, NYT, and a lot of Fortune 500 companies use it. QPM Lab 1: Installing R and R Studio 5
6 What we will accomplish this Lab Session: Download and install R. Download and install R Studio. Perform basic operations using R: Simple aritmetic (R is your new calculator!) Assign a value to an object Install a package, call a library, browse over some functions QPM Lab 1: Installing R and R Studio 6
7 Installing R on your computer 1 Close any running applications on your computer. 2 To obtain R, go to The Comprehensive R Archive Network (CRAN) at 3 Click Download R. 4 Scroll down to the USA, choose CRAN Mirror United States, Washington University, St. Louis. 5 You will see versions of R for Linux, MacOS, and Windows. Download and install the version that corresponds to your operating system. 6 Warning for Windows users: You might want to be careful with your directory of download! 9 Installing R Studio on your computer R Studio allows the user to run R in a more user-friendly environment. It is open-source (i.e. free). To obtain R Studio, go to the following link: Click on Download RStudio Scroll down and choose your operating system (under the Installers block) QPM Lab 1: Installing R and R Studio 9

11 Using R & R Studio We are going to use R & R Studio in every Lab session. You are will need them to solve problems in the homework and lab sessions as well as execute your final project. R is currently installed in the Arts & Sciences Computing Lab, i.e. the computers in front of you. QPM Lab 1: Installing R and R Studio 11
