It is due on the first day back to school in September. NOTE: You will not receive any credit if this assignment is not ready for the first day of school! I read my regularly during the summer. Mr. George Part I: Number System (15 points) Read the Number Systems Conversion notes posted on the APCS home page accessible from my teacher web page on the school web site. Using index cards and in your own words, describe the conversion process and provide examples of the following: a) Converting a Decimal number (base 10) to Binary (base 2) b) Converting a Decimal number (base 10) to Octal (base 8) c) Converting a Decimal number (base 10) to Hexadecimal (base 16) d) Converting from Binary to Decimal e) Converting from Octal to Decimal f) Converting from Hexadecimal to Decimal 1

2 Part II: Interactive APCS Java review from Georgia Tech On Move up day, students registered for the Java review for the APCS A exam from Georgia Tech at: o If you were absent, please register by clicking on the login icon on the top right of the web page, and selecting Register: o o Sign in by filling in the information requested, and by using your school Google account as the address (e.g., first.last@glenridge.org). For Class Name, enter JavaReview. Complete the section, Java Basics: Classes and Objects. o Follow the instructions to complete all activities in the subsections and mark the subsections complete. On the first day back to school, you will show me the completed sections. All completed sections will have a green check mark next to the topic. 2

3 Part III: Install BlueJ and test that it works Download and install BlueJ on a computer that you will have access to for homework (from the following site): Scroll down and select the right download for your computer. The Java JDK must be installed on the computer in order for BlueJ to run. When the download is complete, run the installer to complete the installation. 3

4 After installing BlueJ, follow the instructions for the lab below to write a simple print class. This will test that BlueJ was installed correctly. You will have programming homework for our class. Lab 1 Test that BlueJ was installed properly Create a folder on your computer to store class assignments. From the Project menu, select new Project: Create a new project, BlueJProject1. Select your folder and enter the project name: Click on the Create button. 4

5 The BlueJ code editor will appear. Click on the New class button and enter Printer for the Class name. Click on the OK button: A rectangle representing the class will appear. Double-click on the class in the class diagram to edit the source code: 5

6 BlueJ provides skeleton code when a class is created to help the programmer get started: Fill in your name as the author and make the version 1.1. Remove the private instance variable, x, and any reference to it. For this exercise we will not need it. Remove the sample method and the comment before it. Write a new method, printhelloworld. It will be void and print Hello World to the console: System.out is used to print in Java. The method println prints whatever input parameter is passed to it and then skips a line. Click on the Compile button and close the editor. 6

7 Right click on the Printer class and select new Printer() to create an object of type Printer: The Create object dialog will appear and prompt you for the name of the object variable which will reference the Printer object: Click on the ok button to use the default instance name, printer1. A red square will appear at the bottom of the BlueJ editor. It represents the newly created object of type, Printer: 7

8 Right click on the object to run its method. Select the printhelloworld() method: The method will open a Terminal output window and print the message: If this works, you have installed BlueJ properly. 8
