2 Introduction CGM files - Printing with KIP Systems What is the CGM File Format? CGM, or Computer Graphics Metafile is an open file format for vector graphics, raster graphics and text. Originally designed and used for clipart libraries, it is now mainly used for technical drawings. Since CGM is a metafile (a file containing information describing or specifying another file), it can hold a wide range of graphical and geometrical information. As a result, more than being an explicit graphic file, CGM is a file that holds data and instructions for reconstructing graphical images using an object oriented approach. CGM files are supported by many different programs. Among them are Adobe Illustrator, IMSI TurboCAD, AutoDesk AutoCAD, CorelDraw and PaintShop Pro for Microsoft Windows; and Adobe Illustrator, IMSI TurboCAD and Apple Works for Mac OS. Why use the CGM file format? Usually less complex than postscript and can produce a small file size. Who uses CGM files? Mainly used in engineering, by aircraft manufacturers and utility companies KIP s solution: KIP Print CGM printing in black & white and color is available for KIP 7 Series Systems as well as the KIP C7800 printers. Using KIP Print (7.4 or higher) users can print CGM files in black & white / color. This is an optional format; please see your pricing guides. 3 Installation The components needed to allow the KIP to print CGM files are already installed in the latest KIP Software (newer KIP Update may be necessary). All that is necessary to do is to put the valid CGM license file into the correct location in the KIP IPS. 1. Browse to the location of the license and paste in the License.dat file that will be used to activate. The license location will be here: C:\CGM\ZEHPLOT\PRG\ZEHD\LICENSE Paste the License.dat file in to the License folder

4 Using KIP Print Please Note: This works from KIP Print as well. 1. Open the KIP Print application and Browse to the location of stored CGM files Note: The CGM columns can be turned on in the KIP PRINT software by going to Options and then Modify Columns. Check the boxes next to CGM Width and CGM Length and select OK. 2. The Following columns will appear and allow for the printing of CGM files. The Selection of Auto is default for both columns however specific sizes may also be set through the dropdown arrows. Please note the CGM format is not viewable in the KIP Print viewer but will still print when sent to the KIP Printer. 3. Select File to be printed and select Submit to send the file - 3 -

5 Using KIP Request Please Note: This works from KIP Print as well. 1. Open the KIP Request application and Browse to the location of stored CGM files 2. Select File to be printed and select Submit to send the file 3. A sizing window will open with enhanced quality selected the file will be sent with the original created size. Note: CGM files can also be sizeless, causing an error sheet to print out. In this case uncheck the Enhanced Quality box and give a specific print size

6 Notes: - KIP software (on the KIP Printer) must be version or higher. - KIP Print must be version or higher. - The CGM license is based off of the MAC and the IP address of the PC. These values will be necessary, to obtain the CGM license. To retrieve this please do the following on the KIP Controller: 1. Close the User Interface on the KIP 2. go to CMD prompt and type in ipconfig/all 3. the physical address for the active LAN card is the MAC address and the IPS address will also be noted - 5 -
