1 Boardmaker & Boardmaker Plus for Literacy Development HELP SHEET Working with Words Make-a-word activity- onset rime This activity is designed to help students make words using onset and rime, letters to start the word and letter combinations that are the word endings. Your completed page should look something like this. This activity can be printed and used away from the computer or used in interactive mode (using Boardmaker Plus and Boardmaker with SD Pro). It incorporates the new movable button and symbolate features. Choosing the page setup 1. Open Boardmaker, select Open a new Board from the start screen. If you have Boardmaker open go to fi le and New Board. 2. To select your page setup, go to File, then Print Setup. 3. Click on the Print Setup button to choose the paper type (A4) and print orientation (landscape), then click OK. 4. Under Board Size select Use Display Size if the activity is an onscreen interactive activity and Use Printer Page if the page is to be printed. 1
2 Using the Symbolate tool to add activity instructions 1. Click on the symbolate tool on the toolbar. 2. Click to place the button on the top of the screen. 3. Type your instructions. 4. Select the pointer tool from the toolbar and drag the button from the left or right to adjust its size. 5. To change the text size, right click over the symbolate button to view options and select Font sizes. 6. Using the pointer tool, click and drag the button to place it where you want it on the page. Changing the background colour on the page 1. With the pointer tool, click on the background of the page. 2. Click on the palette on the toolbar. Make sure the display says Background. 3. Click on the background colour you want for the page. Drawing buttons 1. Select the button tool from the toolbar. 2. Click and drag to create a button. The button you have drawn should have an orange dotted line around it. 3. Select the button sprayer tool from the toolbar. 4. Click and drag from the original button to create a new button beside it. The two buttons should be highlighted with green dotted lines. 2
3 Adding a symbol to the page 1. Click on the symbol fi nder button. 2. Type in the word hot. Use search tools or thumbnails to fi nd the picture you want. 3. Click in the space to the left of the fi rst button. 4. Use the pointer tool to drag and resize the picture if needed. Adding and aligning text in a button 1. Click on the fi rst button. 2. Click on the Text tool from the toolbar. 3. Click in the button. Type h. 4. To change text size, right click to see a menu then go to Font sizes to select a suitable size. 5. Click on Alignment to adjust the position of the text in the cell. Draw a dashed line 1. Select the line tool from the toolbar. 2. Select the line thickness tool. 3. Choose the thickness you want. 4. Draw a line from left to right across the page, leaving a space below for more cells. 5. Right click on the line to see a menu. 6. Select the dashed line option. 3
4 Draw more buttons 1. Using the button tool, then the button sprayer tool, draw then spray three buttons below the dotted line. 2. Click and drag while they a highlighted to position the cells. 3. Using the text tool, add at, ot and in in the buttons. 4. Right click over cell to view menu and align as required. 5. Print board out if you are using it as a printable resource. Creating movable buttons The movable button feature is only available in Boardmaker plus and Boardmaker with SDPro. 1. Make sure that the moveable button tool is on your tool bar. 2. If not go to Dynamic Boards, Show, then select Moveable button tool. The icon should now be on your toolbar. 4
5 3. Select the movable button tool. 4. Click on the at button. 5. You will be prompted to add a name. Type in at. And click OK. 6. The name will appear in the centre of the button in a green box. 7. Go through the same procedure for the other two buttons ( ot and in ) Creating destination buttons 1. With the movable button tool still selected, click and drag the movable button labelled ot to the destination button. 2. Drop the movable button on the destination button. A prompt window will be displayed asking you to add a name. Type in hot. 3. Click OK. Adding reinforcement (speech) 1. You will be prompted to select an action, e.g. speak a message. 2. Select Speak Message. 3. Select Use the text above and type Very good. You made the word hot 4. Click OK. 5
6 Changing movable button features To make sure the two other buttons snap back if they are moved onto the destination buttons, follow these steps: 1. Select the pointer tool. 2. Right click over the at button. 3. From the menu select Movable button properties. 4. Click in the box beside the option Snap Back. 5. Click OK. 6. Set the same action for the in button. To use the activity, press Ctrl + U. Changing destination button features 1. Click on the pointer tool. 2. Right click over the destination button. 3. Go to Destination Button Properties from the menu. 4. Tick in the box beside the text Centre Movables This will ensure that the buttons that you move onto a destination button will lock onto the centre of that button. Don t forget to Save you creation when you have fi nished! Go to File, Save as, Name your fi le and Click Save. 6
