Chapter 2: Installation and Removal Correcting a Failed Upgrading Procedure Firmware upgrades may fail in the event of network interruptions, power failures, or if too much data is uploaded to the EO module. Often, uploads of too much data can occur for one of the following reasons: The boot file (typically vxworks.lzs) was accidentally uploaded during the fl0 procedure, instead of the boot procedure. Files were sent to the wrong EO module. The particular hardware version of the module requires only some (but not all) of the available fl0 files. The upgrade.zip file was mistakenly sent to the module. All of these problems can be corrected by re-installing the firmware while in a fail-safe mode, as described in the following pages. When you are performing this procedure, check the appropriate readme file to confirm which files are needed. Use care to ensure that you upload the correct files to the intended module. Setting the Module to Fail-Safe Loader Mode Follow these steps to set a EO module to the fail-safe loader mode: 1. Remove the affected module from the EO frame. 2. Press the av switch down while simultaneously pressing both the Escape and Enter buttons. 3. While still pressing the buttons and the navigation switch, reinsert the module into the frame and hold for approximately three seconds until the display on the module reads Offline-H (or Offline-L) Upload Required. Upgrading the Firmware in Fail-Safe Mode ote To successfully upgrade the firmware, you must follow these steps in the exact sequence described. Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware in the fail-safe mode: 1. Download the most recent appropriate upgrade package from the Leitch Web site or from your CD-ROM, and then unzip the upgrade package. 32 Chapter 2: Installation and Removal 18 MXA-3901H-B4 and MXA-3901H-C4 Installation and Operation Manual
Chapter 3 Operation Overview Installation, navigation, configuration, and setup information is now included in the EO FR-3901, FR-3903, and FR-3923 Mounting Frames Installation and Operation Manual. If your current EO frame manual is Edition A, B, C, or D, you will need to download an updated version from the Leitch Web site ( to access this information. This chapter describes how to operate the MXA-3901H-B4 and MXA-3901H-C4 modules using card-edge controls. The following topics are found in this chapter: Operation otes on page 20 PCM and on-pcm Processing on page 25 Cross-Functional Parameter Changes on page 27 avigating the Operator and All Lists on page 31 Operator and All List Parameters on page 32 Setup Parameters on page 39 Alarms on page 40 EOScope on page 42 State Recovery Parameter Availability on page 42 LEDs and Module Indicators on page 43 MXA-3901H-B4 and MXA-3901H-C4 Installation and Operation Manual 19
Chapter 3: Operation Operation otes Caution Failure to observe these Operation otes will result in accidental changes to the module s parameter settings. When using the MXA-3901H-B4 and MXA-3901H-C4 modules, observe the following operation notes: If you change parameters within 16 seconds after the MXA-3901H-B4 or MXA-3901H-C4 banner first appears on the VFD, your changes will not be saved. Parameter changes that you make after this 16-second delay will be saved and restored if the module loses power and must be restarted. Although the effect of a parameter change may appear to be immediate, the module requires 20 seconds to save the latest change. If another change is made during these 20 seconds, the first parameter change and the second parameter change will not be saved until 20 seconds after the second parameter change. There is no limit to the number of changes that can be made within 20 seconds of each other. However, none of these changes will be saved until 20 seconds after the last parameter change. When the FctryRcl (factory recall) parameter is set to Yes, the module takes several seconds to reset all of the parameters. (See the Operator and All List Parameters on page 32 or the Tree View Parameters on page 55 to view the factory recall default settings.) Setup parameters are not affected by the factory recall mode. Changes in some parameters will cause additional changes in other parameters, or lock them out entirely. See page 27 for more information on these cross-functional parameter changes. Leitch recommends that you terminate any unused coaxial output connectors with a 75Ω terminator. 20 MXA-3901H-B4 and MXA-3901H-C4 Installation and Operation Manual
Chapter 3: Operation Audio Embedding Modes ote The Append and OverWrt settings are only valid if the audio group to be embedded does not already exist. ote Refer to the G1Exists, G2Exists, G3Exists and G4Exists parameters to determine what audio groups are already present in the incoming HD signal. The audio embedding modes are G1EmbMode, G2EmbMode, G3EmbMode and G4EmbMode. Below is a brief description of the Off, Append, OverWrt and Auto settings. Off This setting disables embedding of the selected audio group. Append The embedder will attempt to insert the audio data and control packets immediately following the last existing audio data/control packet in the horizontal ancillary region. OverWrt The embedder will attempt to overwrite existing audio data and control packets of the same group number with the new audio data. In this setting, if the new sample distribution does not exactly match the existing audio data packet sample distribution, the embedder will mark some audio data packets for deletion (DID word will be set to 180h). Auto The embedder will first attempt to overwrite existing audio data and control packets of the same audio group number. Failing that, the embedder will append the new audio data and control packets immediately following the last existing audio data/control packet. MXA-3901H-B4 and MXA-3901H-C4 Installation and Operation Manual 21
Chapter 3: Operation Audio Embedding Errors Below are descriptions of the G1-4AppErr and G1-4OvrWtErr audio embedding errors. G1-4AppErr This error will occur if the embedder is set to Append mode for a particular audio group, but that audio group already exists in the incoming HD signal. In this case, the embedder will not embed another audio data and control packet of the same audio group, as this will result in incorrect audio sample distribution. G1-4OvrWtErr This error will occur if the embedder is set to Overwrite mode for a particular audio group, but that audio group does not already exist in the incoming HD signal. Audio Output Channel Status (OutxxStat) Below are descriptions of the three parameter options for audio output channel level status. Peak The audio output level has reached a level of 0 dbfs. Silence The audio output level is lower than -96 dbfs. ormal The audio output level is between the Peak and Silence threshold levels. Input Channel V-Bit Feedback (InxxVbitFb) Below are descriptions of the two parameter options for input channel validity bit status. On The V-Bit of the incoming audio channel is set to 1. This can indicate that the audio sample word data is invalid (or possibly compressed audio) and is not suitable for D/A conversion. Off The V-Bit of the incoming audio channel is set to 0. This can indicate that the audio sample word data is valid and is suitable for D/A conversion. 22 MXA-3901H-B4 and MXA-3901H-C4 Installation and Operation Manual
Chapter 3: Operation Audio Embedding Channel Source Selection On the MXA-3901H-B4 and MXA-3901H-C4 modules, the following audio source selections are available for each OutxSrc parameter: AES 1A AES 1B AES 2A AES 2B AES 3A AES 3B AES 4A AES 4B AES 1 Sum AES 2 Sum AES 3 Sum AES 4 Sum Test Tone 1 (750 Hz, -20 dbfs) Test Tone 2 (1.5 khz, -20 dbfs) Test Tone 3 (3 khz, -20 dbfs) Test Tone 4 (6 khz, -20 dbfs) If any of the AES input channels are of a on-pcm format, then a channel summation (AES x Sum) of the channel for any OutxSrc is not a valid selection. For example, if AES 1A or AES 1B (or both) are on-pcm, then AES 1 SUM is not a valid selection for any OutxSrc parameter. See on-pcm Processing on page 26 for the handling of on-pcm input channels. MXA-3901H-B4 and MXA-3901H-C4 Installation and Operation Manual 23
Chapter 3: Operation Input Audio Rate When embedding audio in PCM mode (OutxxFrmt = PCM or OutxxFrmt = Auto and OutxxFrmFb = PCM), the input audio rate may be from 32 khz to 108 khz. This input audio will be sample rate converted to 48 khz prior to embedding in the HD video signal; as well, the embedder will indicate 48 khz in the "Rate" word of the audio control packet for each embedded audio group. When embedding audio in on-pcm mode (OutxxFrmt = on-pcm or OutxxFrmt = Auto and OutxxFrmFb = on-pcm), the input audio rate must be 48 khz and frequency locked to the source video. In this scenario, the sample rate conversion function is bypassed and the embedder will indicate 48 khz in the "Rate" word of the audio control packet for each embedded audio group. HD-SDI Presence Indicator The following table describes how the MXA-3901H-B4 or MXA-3901H-C4 indicates the presence of the HD-SDI signal. SdiPrsnt Value Yes o Description One of the following conditions has taken place: The SdiStdSet parameter is set to Auto and the StiStdFb parameter is recognized as being on the supported video standards. The video standard for the StiStdSet parameter that matches the detected standard as reported in the SdiStdFb parameter. One of the following conditions has taken place: The HD-SDI signal is physically not connected to the module. In this situation, the SdiStdFb parameter will report Unknown. The SdiStdSet parameter does not match the SdiStdFb parameter. As a result, the module indicates that the user-selected video standard is not present. 24 MXA-3901H-B4 and MXA-3901H-C4 Installation and Operation Manual
Chapter 3: Operation PCM and on-pcm Processing Channel Summing (PCM Processing only) If you select AES 1 Sum, AES 2 Sum, AES 3 Sum, or AES 4 Sum as the source, the result is the sum of the two parts of the channel divided by two (the mean average). For example, AES 1 Sum = (AES 1A + AES 1B) 2 Therefore, the stereo signal is averaged, creating a monaural signal. See Figure 3-1 for an illustration of this process. Mute AES1 AES1a AES1b AES2 AES2a AES2b Out16 AES3 AES3a Out03 AES4 AES3b AES4a Out02 Out01 AES4b AES1 AES1a AES1b (A+B)/2 AES1sum AES2 AES2a AES2b (A+B)/2 AES2sum AES3 AES3a AES3b (A+B)/2 AES3sum AES4 AES4a AES4b (A+B)/2 AES4sum Test Tone 1 Test Tone 2 Test Tone 3 Test Tone Hz 1.5 khz 3 khz 6 khz Figure 3-1. 40 Chapter 3: Operation on-pcm Processing Compressed non-pcm audio signals cannot be summed and averaged out. Therefore, if you select one of these options, the sources that appear in the Out01Src to Out16Src parameters are arbitrarily matched odd/even to left/right. Example: AES 1A and AES 1B inputs are of a on-pcm format, and AES 1 Sum is selected for the Out01Src and Out02Src parameters. Since the on-pcm channels cannot be summed and averaged, then the output channel assignments are as follows: Out01Src is assigned AES 1A (matched Odd number to Left channel) Out02Src is assigned AES 1B (matched Even number to Right channel) 26 MXA-3901H-B4 and MXA-3901H-C4 Installation and Operation Manual
Chapter 3: Operation Cross-Functional Parameter Changes Table 3-1. 44 Chapter 3: Operation Channel Dithering Channel Word Length When any audio output channel is of a on-pcm format (OutxxFrmt=on-PCM or OutxxFrmt=Auto and OutxxFrmFb=on-PCM), the Dithering feature for that channel pair (1-2, 3-4, etc.) is disabled, even if only one channel of the pair is on-pcm. Both channels in the pair must be of a PCM format for the Dithering feature for that channel pair to be re-enabled. For example, if Out01Frmt is set to on-pcm (or Out01Frmt=Auto and Out01FrmFb=on-PCM), then output channel pair has dithering disabled (DMOut01-02 is set to one and the parameter is disabled), even if Out02Frmt is PCM. If both Out01Frmt and Out02Frmt are changed to PCM, then the DMOut01-02 parameter is re-enabled. When any audio output channel is of a on-pcm format, the Word Length feature for that channel pair is forced to 24-bits and the parameter is disabled, even if only one channel of the pair is on-pcm. Both channels in the pair must be of a PCM format for the Word Length feature for that channel pair to be re-enabled. For example, if Out01Frmt is set to on-pcm, then the WLOut01-02 parameter is set to 24 bits and that parameter is disabled, even if Out02Frmt is PCM. If both Out01Frmt and Out02Frmt are changed to PCM (or Auto, and the associated feedback parameters are PCM), then the WLOut01-02 parameter is re-enabled. 30 MXA-3901H-B4 and MXA-3901H-C4 Installation and Operation Manual

Chapter 3: Operation Operator and All List Parameters ote You can reset the default values for all of the parameters automatically via the FctryRcl parameter, found in this table. This complete list of parameter settings is arranged so that the settings most likely requiring changes are placed at the top of the list. Items on the bottom of the list are the least likely to require changing. Parameters with the designation [RO] are read-only. An asterisk (*) indicates the default user range or value. The All List is a long flat list of all the available parameters, arranged from the most-used to least-used. It is intended for a Supervisor security designation. The Operator List is a condensed version of the All List, and is intended for an Operator security designation. The following table shows all available parameters. Parameters accessed only from within the All List are shaded in gray. See avigating the Operator and All Lists on page 31 for instructions on navigating this list using card-edge controls. 32 MXA-3901H-B4 and MXA-3901H-C4 Installation and Operation Manual
