2 2 STIL Gauging Logger Quick Start Guide To run the logger, press the power On key until a screen is presented like: (screen will turn off in 10 seconds if no key is pressed) STIL Gauging Logger V2.5 Gaugings:0 Mem Used:0 Left:232 Battery :6.2 [ Press the Finish key to get the main menu: 1[Gaugings Menu] 2 Options Menu 3 System Menu 4 Power Off Press the 2 key to get the Options Menu : 1[Last (Main) Menu] 2 Immediate Measure 3 View Summary 4 Back Light On Off Press the 2 key to get to Immediate Measure : Immediate Measure Select Rating [1] (Use 0 for find) Press the 0 key, then the Finish key to bring up a ratings selection: Select Meter: S= O= S= O= The Item in the second line is the meter and propeller serial number. The items in the third and fourth lines are the meter slope and constants. If the meter has only one slope and constant, the fourth line will be empty. The logger can use more than two slope and constants; they are not shown in this screen. If the third and fourth lines are empty, there are no ratings loaded. Please refer to Section 4 of the STIL Gauging Logger Instruction Manual.

3 3 Turn the logger off with the Off key then turn on again, and go to the main menu. Choose Gauging Menu. 1[Last (Main) Menu ] 2 New Gauging 3 Edit Last Gauging Choose the New Gauging menu. Enter gauging data in three screens as follows: Site Number [ ] Date Start Time Staff [1.2 ] Rods: 1=Bottom Set 2=Cable 3=Top Set 1 Default Corrn 1 Dist: 1=Inc 2=Dec[1] 1=start LB, 2=RB 1 Next Next Flow Warning at 10 % Finish Use the Next key to advance, and the Prev key to go back. Use the numeric keys and the Prev and Next keys to enter the data as follows: Site Number May have dotted separated numbers Date Three fields in form Not used in calculations Time Hours and Minutes. Not used in calculations Staff Starting Staff. Not used in calculations Rods Logger will calculate depths of 0.2, 0.6, and 0.8 from surface, or bottom, or for top setting rods. Default Correction use the default. Dist Inc 1=Horizontal positions will increment (start at low end of tape) Start Bank Indicate what side of the bank the readings start from Flow Warning Threshold value for flow warnings use 10% Once these screens are entered, press the Finish key. The logger prompts for the next action with the screen: Ready to measure verticals. Press Finish (or use Prev key to abort) Connect a current meter to the terminals.

4 4 After pressing Finish in the above screen, the user is presented with the screens for the first vertical. For 70% verticals and soundings, there are two interconnecting screens, and for mid-stream verticals there are three interconnected screens. The Next and Prev keys navigate the screens. Enter the data as follows: 1 Posn[1.1 ] Dept 0 Meter 1 2=Mid 3=Snd 4=Ah 3 This sets the water s edge as (Position) 1.1 meters on the measuring tape. Press the Finish key to get: 1[Another Vertical] 2 Redo Vertical 3 Finish Verticals 4 Abort Choose Another Vertical (key 3) Enter data as follows: 2 Posn[2.1 ]1.10 Dept.56 Meter 1 2=Mid 3=Snd 4=Ah 3 This has entered the effective waters edge as tape position 2.1 at a depth of 0.56 meters. Use the Finish key and select Another Vertical. Enter data as: 3 Posn[3.1 ]2.10 Dept.8 Meter 1 2=Mid 3=Snd 4=Ah 2 On pressing the Finish key the screen shows like: D= 0.00 LD= Use the Next key to move the cursor to the center, then press the Measure/Back key. A screen is presented like: P= 3.10,D= 0.32 Count= 25 Time= 25.2 Vel= 1.34 Rms= 0.32 AVel= 1.60 Er= 8.02 Rotate the current meter propeller. The number of propeller revolutions and the elapsed time are displayed together with instantaneous and average velocities. The count will terminate after a preset time or count, or you can finish it early with the Finish key.

5 5 At the end of the count the screen will show: D= 0.00 LD= This shows the count and the time. Counts may be also be done for 0.2 and 0.8. Do several readings. Make the second to last an effective waters edge, and the last a waters edge. Choose the option Finish Verticals. The discharge, mean stage, cross section area and mean velocity will be shown. Choose Finish then End of Gaugings. Enter the end staff and time of the end of gauging. Congratulations. You have just finished a gauging. You can turn the logger off. The data will be saved in memory. Uploading the gaugings to a computer. Open glog support software, and run it. A USB-to-Serial cable and the appropriate drivers will be required if your computer does not have a serial port. From the Transfer menu, choose the Upload Gaugings from Logger option. A window will appear like: On the logger, choose the System Menu then the Xfer to Computer option. The data will be transferred. A listing of all the gaugings in the logger will appear in a window. These can be viewed as text or graphs, and can be saved to disk files for later processing. END.
