6 The Advantage of Using Teamcenter Engineering Software In essence, Teamcenter is a program that encourages high quality communication between cross-functional groups. The Teamcenter program reserves space on a server farm known as the Teamcenter vault. As various applications are used, Teamcenter interacts with them and allows a high degree of organization to the data that is produced or utilized. For example, a designer sits down to create a simple product such as a toaster. She knows that the toaster is going to be made up of a top cover, a base, a heating element, and a plug. The designer then starts the Teamcenter program and begins to run CATIA or some other authoring tool through the program, meaning Teamcenter has hooks that go back to the CATIA application and tag the data as it s being created. As the application is being run, the data lives on the user s account on the local memory of the computer that they are using. However as soon as the data is saved, the data is copied onto the server farm that is the Teamcenter vault. As various users of the data need it, Teamcenter controls the access to the data and allows users to continue to produce other data files associated with the original data. One of the most powerful abilities of Teamcenter is that it allows the creation of data items. A data item is a container that allows a user to package many different types of relational data together. For example, the designer in the previous case creates a data item called plug. Once the design of the plug is prototyped and tested, there may be test results generated along with other notes that are pertinent to the design. These various notes and data files are then packaged into the same data item as the original CATIA part file. Another advantage that the data item affords is that when the original data file is created there may be new revisions of it that are required as the design or the manufacturing take place. All of these revisions will be housed inside of the same data item. Not all data lives in the Teamcenter vault. In some cases Teamcenter is used by other applications that access data and operate on it then send it out to some other server. For example, in the case of the Metrix program as shown in the figure above. 5
7 Why CHANGE? Transform from Mostly disconnected to ONE System structure -- Its Just There CURRENT State Disconnected & Different Systems different team members in different locations have different documents in different status in different folders with different formats and applications with different information on different work places to work on the same project. + 6 Future State Common Same System Johnson Controls Confidential each team member in every location should work on the same documents with a precise status managed by one platform to have permissions control the current and released information just in time and wherever needed in every needed application to work on the same project. Depending on the type of object selected and the configuration specified in your installation s XRT style sheet, you may see tabs such as Overview, Details, Related Datasets, Attachments, History, Change History, Where Used, Structure, Impact Analysis, Available Revisions, and Viewer. Groups of objects within a tab, called object sets, can be configured in the XRT style sheet. Each group of information can be configured to display in table, list, or thumbnail. Each group can also be supported by action command buttons such as Cut and Copy. 15
