4 The first thing I noticed when going through the new revision of E 1444 was the use of testing instead of examination. While this will not affect anything significantly, I believe it is a step toward standardizing the Nondestructive Testing title, while phasing out alternatives such as nondestructive examination and nondestructive inspection. Also, the 1444 is followed by an M, indicating metric. Some references were removed, while others were added. Paragraphs 3.2 and were entirely eliminated. These provided the definition of the term Cognizant Engineering Organization (CEO). So, in the latest revision, don t get it confused with the Chief Executive Officer. While the 05 revision demanded personnel to be qualified, the 11 revision requires personnel to be qualified and certified. This will affect companies that have not certified there NDT personnel in the past, but are required to conform to E There have been a couple changes to the elements of the written procedure. In the previous revision, the written procedure was required to contain the material and alloy of the part being tested. The 11 revision states the material, or alloy, or both need to be in the written procedure. This won t present any more work for anyone, but might. It states that the process controls need to be in (or at least referenced in) the written procedure. Also, an illustration is no longer required showing the areas of the parts to be examined. This makes sense for parts needing 100% coverage, with the same acceptance criteria in all areas. Otherwise, an illustration is still a good idea. Anyone using lx instead of fc will no longer get away with the faulty conversions in the previous revision is now 1076 and 20 is now 22. At least it is now consistent. If you are using fluorescent particles, pay attention to paragraph While not much changed, there is now a daily check of the cleanliness/integrity of the black light. This does not have to be recorded. Also note that it is not consistent with Table 1, which has the black light integrity check as weekly. An interesting addition if you are using a multidirectional machine allows the use of the residual technique with approval from the CEO, which I personally think is a bad idea. Also, don t get caught using your hall effect gauss meter with your multidirectional machine has banned it. When using a Central Bar Conductor (CBC), the previous revision stated that alternating current should only be used to locate discontinuities on the inside diameter of the part. This statement was removed in the new revision. This was explained to me. If you use a ketos ring on an A.C. machine, you will see an indication from the hole that is closest to the outside diameter of the ring. This shows that the magnetic field travels around the entire surface of the part, and can show surface defects on the O.D. as well as the I.D. Jim Draper 3

5 For the dry mag folks, they didn t leave you out. Blowing off the excess powder may no longer be necessary. See for details. Also, you are not allowed to reuse the particles anymore. I hope you were not doing that to begin with. Demagnetizing became a little easier without the 1 foot and 3 foot rules, but they added the word calibrated referring to your field indicator. There is also a new paragraph titled Record of Examination. Be sure to read that one. Traceability is everything. Under System Performance Verification light meters and field indicators were added to the list. This should not affect the majority of companies, because you were already doing this. Right? Also, the ammeter accuracy has a machine output repeatability check that has been added. This makes sense, but may make some machines fail calibration. They are also trying to catch up with technology. There are new requirements for LED blacklights and battery powered blacklights. Also check on the new requirements for gauss meter calibration and light meter calibration. I hope this summery has been helpful, as there were a lot of changes in this revision.
