1 Technology for ESOL Part 1: Computer Basics and Operating System Use these handouts while you go through the self-paced presentation. If you need help ask the Language Lab staff to assist you. Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move forward within the slideshow. After reading slides 1-6 complete the following exercises: Hardware and Software: List 3 examples of hardware: List 3 examples of software: List 3 examples of input devices: List 3 examples of output devices: List 2 example operating systems: List 2 example software applications:
2 Parts of the Computer: (write a brief answer to each of the following questions). Can you think of other types of hardware not mentioned in the slideshow? (write some here) Do you know the difference between hardware and software? (explain in your own words) Do you know what Input and Output means? (explain in your own words) Slide 7: Mouse Skills: Mousing Around Before continuing with the presentation, be sure to finish the MouseSkills tutorial (When you finish, the computer will give you a certificate; show it to your teacher before closing the window). As you go through the tutorial, answer these questions: What are the names of the pointers and what do they tell you:

4 Slides Applications and File Management Copy the vocabulary words from the list on slide 13 here, then write your own definition next to each word/phrase: Word/phrase Definition 1 Application Slide 16: Here are the directions for Starting MS Word fill in the missing words. To open MS Word these steps: 1. Click on the menu 2. Click on 2. to the MS OFFICE folder. 3. on MS Office Word
5 Start Using MS Word Slide 18: Tool Tips: Many applications help you learn the name of tools. Simply move your mouse over the buttons and tools and wait for a label to pop up. Can you find the names of these items: A. B. C. D. E. Read Slides 19-21: Then follow these steps to start using MS Word: 1. Type your name at the top of your new document. [Press the ENTER key] 2. You see that ENTER automatically starts a new line. Now copy the following sentences into the next line. Word processing applications like MS Word automatically start a new line when you are typing, you do NOT need to press [ENTER] when you are typing a paragraph. Now use the keyboard to copy this text into your Word Processing Document: An operating system (also called an OS) is what is needed to run the programs on a computer or a mobile device. The programs that run on an Operating System talk to the hardware. Microsoft Windows and Mac OS are common operating systems. Less common, but important operating systems are Linux, Unix, and Solaris. (Simple English Wikipedia:
6 Slide 22 Saving a document (read the slide and fill in the missing words): Follow these steps to Save Your : Click the Office Button (or File menu) and choose : (when you choose Save As you need to tell the computer the :where you want to save your file and also give the file a :. REMEMBER! It is very important to NOT change the file :). For LOCATION click Desktop For file name type a file name to the left of the period (before the extension). Read slides opening / renaming documents. Follow these steps to complete the homework for this module: 1. Create a new word processing document. 2. Type in the document your full name on the first line then [ENTER] 3. On the next line type the date: (month/day/year) [ENTER] [ENTER] 4. On the next line type two or three sentences about yourself. Do not press enter; let the computer wrap lines as needed. 5. Save your document to your flash drive show it to your instructor.

I can: Use a keyboard Understand the basics of files and file Keyboard WPM names. Use a mouse to operate the computer Locate files in various directories/folders. Understand computer operating system Understand and use computer basics vocabulary Start an application from the start menu Recognize the parts of the computer and Save files using the Save As command understand their basic functions.
