About this manual The CADdoctor for Autodesk Simulation manual is designed with the new CADdoctor user in mind. In creating this manual, our goal is to introduce you to some skills needed to import, simplify and cleanup models. Using this manual This manual is separated into chapters. Each of the chapters covers a specific topic and includes the following sections: Aim Describes the learning objectives of the chapter. Why Do It Outlines the reasons for following the prescribed guidance, suggestions and methodology within the chapter. Overview A complete outline of what will be covered within the chapter. Practice This section contains hands-on exercises used to reinforce what was learned. The practice section guides you through the steps necessary to complete a specific task. Theory and concepts Theory and concepts discusses background information on the subject matter of the chapter. This is designed to give the user detailed background information regarding important concepts and work flows. iii
Formatting used in this manual Tasks To perform a step on the computer 1. A task is used in the practice section of a chapter to indicate steps to be done on the computer in the sequence presented. 2. List of numbered steps to complete the task. 2.1 Tasks can have a sub-step. A bulleted list provides information on a step, or a non-sequential actions to be done. Bulleted lists Tip A second level bulleted list provides information on a sub-step. Items in a bulleted list are often different pieces of information related to the topic. It does not represent a list of steps that have to be followed in sequence. Note Warning A tip is a useful piece of information that is normally associated with a task or procedure. Something that can be done to make a task easier or more efficient. A note is generally used to highlight some background or theoretical information. A warning is used to inform you of possible problems if the procedure described is not followed exactly. iv
Aim Chapter 1 Introduction to CADdoctor The aim of this chapter is to learn how CADdoctor can be used to fix and optimize the original CAD file. Why do it When importing a model inside Autodesk Simulation Moldflow Insight or Autodesk Simulation Moldflow Adviser previously optimized by CADdoctor the cleanup time process inside the simulation program is reduced. Overview In this chapter, you will be introduced to CADdoctor. You will learn about: Program overview. Supported models. You will practice with the program features: Translation functions Simplification functions. Automatic fixing tools. 1
Theory and Concepts - Overview of CADdoctor CADdoctor is a tool that enables users to import, clean-up and simplify CAD geometry for use in Autodesk Simulation Moldflow Insight and Autodesk Simulation Moldflow Adviser. Most of the detected errors can be resolved by CADdoctor's automatic healing functionality. If any errors remain after automatic healing, you can resolve them with a suite of tools provided by CADdoctor. This process is referred to as manual healing. User interface (UI) The CADdoctor graphical user interface is used to diagnose, fix and simplify models (see Figure 1). Figure 1: CADdoctor user interface The CADdoctor User Interface is divided into six main sections which are described in Table 1 and shown in Figure 2 on page 3. 2 Chapter 1 Introduction to CADdoctor

Opens a sub menu with options to check the entire model to recalculate the broken segments. Opens a sub menu with options to check and divide a shell by creating a plane-cut that allows you to create a plane cut with less operations than using the [Create] - [Curve] - [On Surface] function to divide a shell. It also adds an attribute on boundary so that you refer to them to merge the divided shells. It is an effective method to roughly merge two isolated shells. Opens a sub menu with options to recognize and remove a narrow face whose width is smaller than the specified value. Removes the specified faces and fix the hole generated by the removal by extending the surrounding faces. Extends the surrounding faces automatically to fill open area. Connect two Open Areas Fill Crack Connects the gap between two open areas by extending the surrounding faces. Creates faces between two specified edge groups. This function is useful to fill a big open area. 10 Chapter 1 Introduction to CADdoctor
Simplification functions should be performed after errors in the model have been fixed. Table 10: Geometry Verification menu commands Settings Geometry Verification Mode Synchronize View Target Model Open Left Model Open Right Model Partial Geometry Verification Point Indicator Create Report Sets options for the Geometry Verification Mode. Toggles the Geometry Verification mode. If you are already in the Geometry Verification Mode, it will switch the mode back to standard mode. Opens the model on the left view. Opens the model on the right view. Table 11: Windows menu commands New Allows you to run the partial comparison after a modification and go back to the process. Opens a sub menu with options to add point indicators/measuring indicators on entities by selecting face/edge/point in Geometry Verification Mode or to remove them. Creates an XML report automatically from the comparison result. Cascade Opens a new model window. Displays all open model windows as a cascade from the upper left to the lower right of the screen. Tile Open model list Tiles all open model windows. Windows will be displayed side by side or in a grid. Displays the open models. The active model can be changed. Chapter 1 Introduction to CADdoctor 11
Table 12: Help menu commands Index Context Help Version information (CADdoctor) Toolbars Toolbars are groups of commands with similar functions. Toolbars can be docked on any side of the CADdoctor interface, or can float over the display. The toolbars include: Information. Edit. View operation. Selection. Create. Analysis. Geometry verification. Help. Activates the on-line help and opens the 'Index' tab. Activates the context sensitive help. Opens a dialog indicating which version of CADdoctor you are using. File. View. Pick filter. Show element. Modify. Simplification. DE search. Arrange. Any toolbar can be turned off with the View > Toolbars command, or when you right-click to activate the context menu over a docked toolbar. When a cursor hovers over an icon, a text popup appears, indicating the function of the icon, as shown in Figure 3. The toolbar icons contain the same commands that are in the main menu. Figure 3: Icon rollover text 12 Chapter 1 Introduction to CADdoctor
Shortcut keys Shortcut keys in CADdoctor follow Microsoft Windows standards for common commands, such as Ctrl + C as a shortcut for Copy. Most shortcuts are a key combination starting with the Ctrl key. If a command has a shortcut, the shortcut is listed with the command on the menu. Most of the Shortcut keys are shown in Table 13: Table 13: Shortcut keys Context menu The context menu is activated with a right mouse click. The available commands on the menu will be different depending where you right-click. The context menu can be clicked: Shortcut key Ctrl + N Ctrl + O Ctrl + S Ctrl + Z Ctrl + Y Ctrl + D Ctrl + R Ctrl + F F1 In a docked toolbar. In the view window. On a selected entity. Dialog boxes Menu Initialize Open Save Undo Redo Redraw Regen Auto Scale Help (Index) Many menu commands open dialog boxes, as the icons on the toolbar do. When you choose a menu item, if the command has three periods after the name a dialog will open. An example of this is in the file menu. The Open and System Preferences options open dialogs if any of them are selected. Chapter 1 Introduction to CADdoctor 13
Frequently used View operations These short-cut type view operations are used frequently and helps decreasing clicking icons. Various modifier keys work with the left-mouse button for quick display manipulation. This operation is sometimes useful when viewing shaded data, particularly when zooming in and out. Table 14: View operations Icon Description Fit: Regen: Pan: Zoom Area: Rotate 3D: Shading Wireframe Ctrl + F or View > Auto Scale Fits the model to the screen. Ctrl + R, Regenerates the model and redisplays it. Shift + left-mouse Pan the model on the screen. Ctrl + middle-mouse (drag vertically) Dynamically magnify the model. Shift + Ctrl + left-mouse Rotate the model about all 3 axes. Toggle on and off shading for the part. Toggle on and off the wire frame of the part. 14 Chapter 1 Introduction to CADdoctor
