4 Installing and Licensing Softimage on Linux On Linux 64-bit operating systems, Autodesk Softimage and Autodesk Softimage Advanced are installed and run with Autodesk network licensing only. This document provides quick steps for the following workflows: Quick Steps: Installing the Autodesk Network License Server on page 5. 5 Installing and Licensing Softimage on Linux Quick Steps: Installing the Autodesk Network License Server These are the basic steps for installing and configuring an Autodesk network license server. Once your server is set up, you can install and run network-licensed versions of Autodesk Softimage or Autodesk Softimage Advanced. Follow these steps to get your license server up and running quickly. However, for complete descriptions of all procedures and features of network licensing, please refer to the Autodesk Network Licensing Guide and the FLEXnet License Administration Guide. Install the Autodesk Network License Manager The Network License Manager is used to configure and manage the license servers. The Autodesk Network License Manager consists of the following files: lmgrd, adskflex, and lmutil. lmgrd is the license server manager and it is controlled from a command-line. 1. The license server manager files are packaged as an RPM that is available as a download with the Web setup package or directly from the Softimage DVD. 2. The RPM is named /RPMS/adlmflexnetserver x86_64.rpm. To extract the files, enter the following at a prompt: rpm -ivh adlmflexnetserver x86_64.rpm The license server manager files are extracted by default to the following location: /opt/flexneterver 3. Create an empty licenses.lic file that will contain your Autodesk license keys and save it on your server (you can name the license file anything you want). The suggested location is to create a /license sub folder under the folder where your license server manager files are located. For example: /opt/flexnetserver/license/licenses.lic 5 Autodesk Softimage

Go online at to register and activate your licenses on your network license server. 5. Log in to your Autodesk account with a valid User ID and Password. If you do not have an Autodesk user account, you must create one. Click Create User ID Now. 6. Choose the Account for which you are registering your product. Click Next. 7. On the Product Registration & Activation page, make the following selections: - Select the product s operating system. - Enter the product s serial number. 8. Enter your network server information: - Choose your network server type: Single, Redundant, or Distributed server. - Enter the host name (computer name) of your server. To get the server s name, you can type the following at a prompt:./lmutil lmhostid -hostname - Enter the server ID. To get the server s ID, you can type the following at a prompt:./lmutil lmhostid 9. Click Next. 10. When the License(s) Received window is displayed, your license file is ready to be saved. Click Save License File. 11. Specify the location where you want to save your license file. For example: /opt/flexnetserver/license/licenses.lic 12. Click Save and wait for the download to complete. Click Close. 13. You can Log Off and close your browser. Installation Guide 6

7 Installing and Licensing Softimage on Linux Start the License Server Manager The license server manager, lmgrd, is started either manually on the command line or automatically at system startup. You should start lmgrd only on the system specified on the SERVER line in the license file. - Start your license server manager from the command line using the full path to your license file:./lmgrd -c <path>/licenses.lic -l <path>/debug.log Start lmgrd by a user other than root since processes started by root can introduce security risks. If lmgrd must be started by the root user, use the su command to run lmgrd as a non-privileged user: su username -c "lmgrd -c <path>/licenses.lic -l <path>/debug.log" - You can also configure the license server manager to run automatically at startup. Please refer to the documentation for your particular Linux distribution on how to configure a process to run as a service. There is also an example for how to edit the boot script in the FLEXnet License Administration Guide. With your server up and running, you are ready to install networklicensed versions of Autodesk Softimage or Autodesk Softimage Advanced, see Quick Steps: Installing A Network-Licensed Version of Softimage on page 8. 7 Autodesk Softimage

8 Quick Steps: Installing A Network-Licensed Version of Softimage Quick Steps: Installing A Network-Licensed Version of Softimage These are the basic steps for installing and running a network-licensed version of Autodesk Softimage or Autodesk Softimage Advanced on a Linux system. The Setup program installs the Softimage software files and then prompts you to enter the name of the Autodesk license server(s) from where you will obtain your activated license. It is assumed that your license server has already been set up and started as described in Quick Steps: Installing the Autodesk Network License Server on page 5. To install the Softimage software 1. Run the Softimage Setup program. You can run the setup program directly from the Software DVD or you can download and extract it from the Web setup package onto your hard disk. 2. Accept the End User License Agreement (EULA). 3. Specify the installation path. For more information, see Specifying the Destination Folder on page Select Typical Install as the setup type. 9 Installing and Licensing Softimage on Linux Typical installs the following components: - The Autodesk Softimage software. A Typical installation of Softimage includes the mental ray standalone software components; however, the mental ray and distributed rendering services are not configured unless you choose the Custom Install option. See Quick Steps: Installing Softimage and the mental ray Standalone on page The Autodesk Softimage SDK components. -The User s Guide and the SDK Guide, which are installed to your system as several files in the Compiled HTML Help format (*.chm). These guides provide complete procedural information for using the software and are available from the Help menu within Softimage. If you prefer, you can download an alternate HTML Help format (uncompiled) from the Softimage Wiki. - The XSI_Samples project to get you started with Softimage. 9 Autodesk Softimage

In the Server hostname box, enter the computer name or IP address of the computer that is running the license server. 6. Assuming that you already have the license server installed, click Test to verify that your computer can connect to the license server. A message appears confirming if the server was reached. 7. If the server was successfully reached, click Add to append this server name to the _ADSK_LicServers variable in your environment script (the.xsi_2010 file). The environment variable specifies the server(s) from which Softimage will obtain a license. Also, make sure that SILicMethod is set to Network. You can always edit this file later to change or add a server name. 8. To add more than one server to the list, enter another computer name and click Add again. 11 Installing and Licensing Softimage on Linux Quick Steps: Installing Softimage and the mental ray Standalone These are the basic steps for installing both Softimage and the mental ray standalone software on the same computer. Unlike Softimage, the mental ray standalone software must obtain its license from an SPM license server. It is assumed that the SPM license server is already set up and running with the appropriate activated licenses. You can get the SPM server setup file from the Softimage setup package (downloaded from autodesk.com or directly from the Softimage DVD). The file is named SPM-1414-linux64.tgz. To install Softimage and the mental ray standalone 1. Run the Softimage Setup program. You can run the setup program directly from the Software DVD or you can download and extract it from the Web setup package onto your hard disk. 2. Accept the End User License Agreement (EULA). 3. Specify the installation path. For more information, see Specifying the Destination Folder on page Select Custom Install as the setup type. 11 Autodesk Softimage

For more information, see Selecting the SPM License Server on page Configure one or both types of distributed rendering (satellite and standalone) by selecting its checkbox. You can then configure a port for each type of distributed rendering you selected. For more information, see Configuring Distributed Rendering on page When you re done, the setup program will install and start the services used for mental ray and distributed rendering. 16 Quick Steps: Installing the mental ray Standalone Only Quick Steps: Installing the mental ray Standalone Only These are the basic steps for installing only the mental ray standalone software on the computer you want to use for rendering. Unlike Softimage, the mental ray standalone software must obtain its license from an SPM license server. It is assumed that the SPM license server is already set up and running with the appropriate activated licenses. You can get the SPM server setup file from the Softimage setup package (downloaded from autodesk.com or directly from the Softimage DVD). The file is named SPM-1414-linux64.tgz. To install the mental ray standalone 1. Run the Softimage Setup program. You can run the setup program directly from the Software DVD or you can download and extract it from the Web setup package onto your hard disk. 2. Accept the End User License Agreement (EULA). 3. 18 Quick Steps: Installing the mental ray Standalone Only Specifying the Destination Folder Choose the folder in which you want to install Softimage. By default, Softimage is installed in the folder /usr/softimage. If you want to use a different location, click Change Destination. Avoid using non-alphanumeric characters such or # as part of the install path name. These are reserved characters in the Linux operating system and may cause the installation to fail. When the Destination Folder is the one you want, click OK to continue. After installation, $SI_HOME is the environment variable pointing to the directory in which Softimage is installed. Shared Installation on Linux You can install Softimage on a shared drive and users can run it remotely from their own workstations without requiring a local installation of all the software files. The initial startup time is a bit slower when accessing Softimage remotely, but once Softimage is up and running, it performs the same as if you were running locally. Installation Guide 18

19 Installing and Licensing Softimage on Linux To set up a shared installation Install Softimage to a shared drive. On the machine from which you want to run Softimage, do the following: Change directories to the location of the shared drive. Source the.xsi_2010 environment script from the shared location. Start Softimage. The first time you run Softimage from the shared drive, your local registry is automatically updated and the necessary preference files and per-user data structure is created. You can have a local installation of Softimage on a machine from which you also want to access a remote installation of Softimage of the same version. However, you will have to delete the registry file in the user account and source the.xsi_2010 file again before starting Softimage. You will have to do this each time you switch between the local and remote installation from the same machine. 19 Autodesk Softimage

20 Quick Steps: Installing the mental ray Standalone Only Selecting the SPM License Server This dialog box opens if you selected the Configure mental ray and distributed rendering services option for a Custom Install, or if you are installing only mental ray standalone as a Render Slave. 1. Enter the name of the SPM license server. In the License Server box, enter the computer name or IP address of the computer that is running the SPM server. For example, if you type buzz, Setup tries to connect to the license server called buzz on port Click Add to append this server name to the SPM_HOST variable in the set_spmhost.bat file. You can always edit this environment variable later to change or add another SPM server name. To add more than one server to the list, enter another computer name and click Add again. Click the Next button to cycle through the server names you have set. Choosing a TCP/IP Port for the SPM Service The SPM server communicates with SPM clients connected on the same network through a TCP/IP port. The SPM license server listens on this port defined by mi-spm (port 7050 by default). When a client needs a license, it contacts the license server on that port to get it. 3. In the Port Settings box, select a port for SPM to use when communicating with the SPM license server. By default, SPM s TCP/IP service is defined at port If you need to specify a different port, select the Edit Port Number check box and either enter a new port number or click Next Free Port to find the next available port. 4. 21 Installing and Licensing Softimage on Linux Configuring Distributed Rendering This dialog box opens if you selected the Configure mental ray and distributed rendering services option for a Custom Install, or if you are installing only mental ray standalone as a Render Slave. You can configure two types of distributed rendering: Satellite distributed rendering requires a Softimage license that supports Satellite rendering for the master machine. No additional licences are required for the slave machines. Select the Configure satellite distributed rendering check box for this option. Standalone distributed rendering requires a Softimage license that supports standalone rendering for the master machine. Each slave processor requires an additional mental ray standalone license. Select the Configure standalone distributed rendering check box for this option. To configure one or both types of distributed rendering, activate it by selecting its checkbox. This activates its port selection options. You can then choose a port for its mental ray service to listen on. Choosing a TCP/IP Port for Distributed Rendering You must select a port for mental ray to use when communicating with other computers during distributed rendering sessions. Choosing a Port By default, the Setup program automatically chooses port 7004 or the next available port for whichever type of distributed rendering you ve configured. If you need to specify a different port, select Edit Port Number and either enter a new port number or click Next Free Port to find the next available port. When you re done, the setup program will install and start the services used for distributed rendering. 21 Autodesk Softimage

22 Quick Steps: Uninstalling Softimage All computers in a distributed rendering network must run the same version of the mental ray software. It is strongly recommended that they also use the same TCP/IP port number for each distributed rendering type. It is particularly important to use the same TCP/IP port number if you are doing distributed rendering across different platforms. Any port number greater than 7024 is recommended. In Softimage, choose Help > User s Guide > Rendering > Distributed Rendering for complete details on how to set up a distributed rendering environment. Quick Steps: Uninstalling Softimage After you ve installed the Softimage software, you can run the Setup program to add or remove all of the Softimage components. You may also want to add a component that you did not install during the initial setup or one that you previously removed. Any time you start the Setup program after Softimage is installed, it automatically opens in maintenance mode. You must exit Softimage before running the Setup program. Make sure to back up any personal or Softimage user-configurable files before you remove all of the software. Installation Guide 22
