3 Preinstallation Instructions This water softener has been supplied with a copy of the installation and operating instructions for an IM Series water softener. The installation process is performed the same way with the exception of locating the solar panel. Solar Panel Installation: The solar panel should be mounted at a location that is exposed to natural light. The wiring harness will accommodate locating the panel up to 25 away from the water softener control valve. The wiring should then be routed through the back plate of the control valve and connected to the right side of the circuit board. Ensure that the RED wire from the solar panel is connected to the POSITIVE terminal on the circuit board and the WHITE wire from the solar panel is connected to the NEGATIVE terminal on the circuit board. Battery Connection: The battery pack is not connected to the circuit board to conserve battery power during shipping. After solar panel installation, the battery pack should be connected to the circuit board. The connector is located on the bottom of the control valve circuit board. Battery Power: The SPM Series circuit board has a power conservation feature which turns the display off after approximately 20 seconds of inactivity. The display can be reactivated by pressing any button on the panel. The battery back is shipped with a small charge for initial settings and installation. A fully charged battery will require the solar panel to be exposed to natural light for a period of 24 hours or longer, depending on the light intensity. Programming: The solar powered control valve programming is different from the IM Series unit. Please refer to the appropriate programming instructions on the following pages. 2

4 USER Programming The display can be scrolled through the following screens by pressing the NEXT button: Current Time, volume remaining before regeneration, number of days before regeneration override, current flow rate and total water used since last resetting the meter. Display the current time of day is displayed Buttons press and HOLD either the up or down button to set the CURRENT hour (make sure to pay attention to the AM and PM indicator. to advance to the minutes Buttons press and HOLD either the up or down button to set the CURRENT minutes Display VOLUME REMAINING (800 gallons is displayed). This is a calculated value and cannot be manually adjusted 3

5 Display Days to Regeneration Override is displayed (14 days is displayed) Display Current Flow Rate (2.5 gallons per minute is displayed). This is a calculated value based on the current water use and cannot be manually adjusted. Display Total volume since last reset (1,350 gallons is displayed). This totalizing meter can be reset by pressing and HOLDING the DOWN Arrow. to return to the current time of day. 4

6 INSTALLER Programming The installer programming includes setting the incoming water adjusted hardness (in grains per gallon), setting the day override (factory preset for 14 days) and setting the desired time of regeneration (factory preset for 2:00 AM) Buttons press and HOLD the NEXT and UP buttons simultaneously for 5 seconds Display the incoming water adjusted hardness is displayed Buttons press and HOLD either the up or down button to set the adjusted water hardness Display Days of Regeneration Override is displayed (14 days is displayed) Buttons press and HOLD either the up or down button to set the days override 5

7 Display the TIME OF REGENERATION is displayed (factory preset to 2:00 AM) Buttons press and HOLD either the up or down button to set the TIME OF REGENERATION hour (make sure to pay attention to the AM and PM indicator. to advance to the minutes Buttons press and HOLD either the up or down button to set the TIME OF REGENERATION minutes to return to the current time of day 6

8 CYCLE Programming The cycle times and other programming of valves on SPM Series units are LOCKED at the factory. In order to access this programming you must press and release the DOWN, NEXT, REGEN and UP buttons. After reviewing or adjusting the cycles the programming can be relocked by pressing and releasing the same buttons. Buttons press and release in order Display shows whether programming is now locked or unlocked Cycle Times Listed below are typical cycle times and programming for model SPM30 water softeners. Buttons press and HOLD both buttons for 5 seconds Display shows that the unit is programmed as a water softener Display SOFTENER CAPACITY (20,000 grains [20.0 x 1000] capacity is displayed) Display BACKWASH CYCLE (6 minutes cycle duration is displayed) 7

9 Display BRINE DRAW AND SLOW RINSE CYCLE (45 minutes cycle duration is displayed) Display 2 nd BACKWASH CYCLE (4 minutes cycle duration is displayed) Display RAPID RINSE CYCLE (4 minutes cycle duration is displayed) Display SALT SETTING (6 minutes [9 pound] salt setting is displayed) to return display to Home position 8
