4 1 General Update Information Any update of the FLASH-based device firmware always implies the risk of damaging the device. So we do not recommend such updates. If the update is done without previous written approval by W-IE-NE-R power electronics GmbH, any failures resulting in such action are not covered by any warranty. The UEL6000 Ethernet firmware consists of two parts: The bootloader part (executed after device reset) and the firmware (executed automatically by the bootloader after startup). It is not necessary (and not recommended) to update the bootloader if the bootloader revision is equal or newer than version A simply way to check this is to use the firmware update tool described in section 2. Only if you don t get a connection to the fan tray, the bootloader update described in chapter 4 is required. 2 UEL6000 Firmware Update (Ethernet) Requirements: PC running Microsoft Windows operating system. Download the latest version of the firmware update tool from (e.g. TMS320BLInstall exe) and execute the installation program. Check our website for the recommended/most recent firmware version. The file shows information about the different firmware revisions. Download the firmware file (UEL6E-4.x.x.0.out). Connect the fan tray to your windows computer via Ethernet, and record the fan tray IP address. Next start the TMS320BL utility: 20. September 2017 UEL6000 Ethernet 1

5 Select from the menu bar: Extras -> Preferences Click the green Connect button, or Device -> Connect If the connection is successful, the information of the bootloader & firmware are shown: Enter the device IP address and the SNMP communities for read and write. Click OK. Remark: The default community is WIENER or wiener, so if WIENER does not connect try the lower case variant. Next open the new firmware (File -> Open) Some ignored words and warnings are ok. If not successful, try the other community name (WIENER -> wiener). If this does not work either, it is necessary to update the bootloader (chapter 5) 20. September 2017 UEL6000 Ethernet 2

6 Stop firmware execution and give the device control to the bootloader: Device -> Start Bootloader Now the bootloader is active. Next erase the firmware flash: Program & Verify the new firmware Finally start the new firmware. Firmware update is done now. Remember to check the EEPROM based configuration settings (chapter 3 ) 20. September 2017 UEL6000 Ethernet 3

7 3 UEL6000 Configuration After programming a new firmware version, the configuration items (EEPROM) must be verified. New EEPROM items are automatically set to default values (If this happened the fan tray complains with ERROR:xxx messages during startup. Each message has to be confirmed by pushing the SYSRES button). To change to the configuration mode, you have to push the power and mode switch up simultaneously. More details about the configuration mode can be found in the Series 6000 manual ( Set the configuration value of the following items should be checked: Main Menu Related Config Menu Value Remark TCPIP SNMP Default: Yes This resets all SNMP communities/passwords to the default values FANS Fans on for 60s FANS Fan Fail: AutoOff The following settings are essential for correct fan speed measurement! 8 4 UEL6000 Bootloader Update This procedure describes the bootloader update to version UEL6-BL of an UEL6000 Ethernet running very old firmware/bootloader. It is not necessary/recommended to update the bootloader if the connection to the firmware update tool (chapter2 ) is working. Necessary equipment: PC running Microsoft Windows (98 or newer) operating system, with a RS232 (COM) interface. A patch cable to connect the UEL6000 with this computer. See chapter 5 for details. Requirements: Download the TMS320 program tools from our website. Extract the.zip file to a local folder. Please check our website for the recommended/most recent bootloader version, today this is UEL6-BL out Download the bootloader file UEL6-BL out and store it in the folder containing the TMS320 tools. Open a command prompt and set your TMS320 tools folder as the current directory. Update procedure: 2. Connect the computers COM port to the UEL6000 Hint: This must be done before doing the following steps because the autobaud detection of the UEL6000 ROM is critical. Connecting the cable after starting the Load Update mode may cause connection errors. 3. Switch the UEL6000 into Load Update mode The Load Update mode is a submenu of the RS232 Configure menu of the configuration menu. 10 This is the last chance to interrupt the update. Make sure that yout PC is stably powered and close other applications. If you say 'y' here, the UEL6000 flash is erased. Next messages are: Erase the flash. Program the flash?(y/n) y You should say 'y', too. If not, you have got an empty flash which can only be reprogrammed at the factory. The verify function will be called automatically. It scans the flash and compares it with the content of firmware file. 20. September 2017 UEL6000 Ethernet 7

11 The programming of the main firmware is done by using functionality of the boot loader. So the boot loader firmware must be started. This is achieved by powercycling the AC mains for at least 20 seconds. To prevent possible permanent damage of the computer or fan tray circuit it is necessary to disconnect the serial COM cable connection during the power cycling! disconnect the UEL COM cable switch off the AC mains (e.g. with AC socket with integrated switch) wait at least 20 seconds switch on the AC mains again reconnect the UEL COM cable After the restart the display will display Bootloader active and the IP address it is using for Ethernet connection. Use this IP address and program the firmware (chapter September 2017 UEL6000 Ethernet 8

The firmware-update of the UEL6000 does only require the GND, TXD and RXD lines, RTS/CTS are not used. An easy way of producing such a cable is the use of a standard Ethernet patch cable, which wires are colored according to EIA568A or B, cut it in the middle, and connect a DSBU9 female connector. 20. 13 6 Appendix: Special Information for service specialists If the UEL6000E processor TMS320F2811is replaced, or if something went wrong during the programming, the above instructions cannot be used. In this situation, there exists another way to start the (ROM-based) programming code: Replace chapter 4 step 3 (Switch the UEL6000 into Load Update mode) by the following instructions: a. Disconnect the UEL6000 from mains b. On the UEL6000 PCB, short the (not assembled) R4 c. Apply power to the UEL6000 d. Continue with the instructions above (step 4). When completed, the shorted resistor must be removed before restart. Background: If R4 is shorted during power-up, the DSP is processing the ROM code, and not the FLASH code. R4 must be shorted only during the power-up period (So if you are trained, don't use a solder bridge, but an insulated screwdriver at the right time) 20. September 2017 UEL6000 Ethernet 10
