2 1. Introduction This document describes how to upgrade firmware of Pi-931-X34CC and Pi-931-XA5 reader module via USB port using USB to UART(TTL) converter. Pi-931 uses STM32F103 as a microcontroller to control SIC9310 reader IC. User can upgrade firmware of STM32F103 on Pi-931 board to improve the operations and performance of each upgrades. This application note only shows USB connection method via USB to UART(TTL) converter. 2. Getting Start 2.1 System requirements This is the list of the necessary components which user needs to use in downloading process. Please remind that these components are not included in Pi-931 box set except the Pi-931 board. Pi-931 board, X34CC or XA5 Model, all jumper removed. A personal computer with these specifications : o Operating System: Windows XP or higher o CPU and memory : Refer to each Window s specifications o Free space: At least 10 MB left in HDD o Port: Serial(COM) Port or USB Port STM s Flash Loader Demo version software setup package o Please Check W_DEMO&ClassID=1734 and click the zip icon as show in Fig.1 below Fig.1 Download link for STM Flash Loader Software Demo version Page 2 of 11

6 3.2 Connect to Pi Serial Port with RS-232 to UART(TTL) converter For Serial port, connect the cable as seen in Fig. 8 GND GND Serial Cable RS-232 to UART Converter TXD RXD 5V (Optional) TXD RXD 5V Pi USB Port with USB to UART(TTL) converter For USB Port, connect the cable as seen in Fig. 9 Fig.8 RS-232 Cable Connection GND GND USB Cable USB to UART Converter TXD RXD 5V (Optional) TXD RXD 5V Pi Access STM32F103 Boot Loader Fig.9 USB Cable connection Connect Jumping wire between pin1(b0) and pin3(dvdd) at 5-pin connector (JP1 for Pi-931- X34CC and JP2 for Pi-931-XA5) Power up Pi-931 Fig.10 Jumping wire Connecting If user uses USB power, sets jumper to USB Position at Power Source Connector (JP3 for Pi931- X34CC and JP1 for Pi-931-XA5) If user uses external +5V Power, set jumper to UART(TTL) Position at Power Source Connector (JP3 for Pi931-X34CC and JP1 for Pi-931-XA5) If user uses external adaptor power (for Pi-931-XA5 only), set jumper to J1 position If the process is correct, the blue LED will not light Remove jumping wire, then select UART interface by setting the jumper at INFSEL position User can access STM32F103 boot loader now. 7 3.4 Download Hex Code to Pi-931 Note: Please see ST Microsystems s User Manual number UM0462 for details. Step 1. Open Flash Loader Demo program Step 2. In the Connecting screen, settings as Fig.10 and click Next Fig.10 Connection settings Step 3. Click Remove Protection. 9 Step 4. In the device information screen, settings as Fig.13, then click Next Fig.13 Device information Step 5. In the operation screen, Click Download to Device and Select the firmware.hex file by click button, after selection, do the settings as Fig.14 Fig.14 Download to device Page 9 of 11

11 3.5 Reset Pi Turn-off the power source Set Jumper back to user s configuration and turn-on the power source Pi-931 is now upgraded and ready to use Page 11 of 11
