2 Product Description Join the revolution with the new and amazing Infrarat autonomous toy car. This car has been carefully designed by the well known geniuses of the Purdue ECE477 Team 14 design team. This car has it all, follow mode, flee mode, and manual control. You can easily control this technologically advanced car using a commonly available Android phone (not included). Using a highly advanced algorithm, follow mode can use the mounted Infrared sensors to track and follow a person s body heat. If you ever wanted to creep out your pet or sister then this mode is for you. The Infrared sensors are mounted using carefully milled aluminum brackets made to with stand the roughest abuse. The bracket is mounted on a servo to allow for better movement when tracking incase the motors can t turn in time. Using the power of sound, the Infrarat can detect objects within proximity to it and flee from it. It is a great mode for people of all ages. Say good bye to boredom with this mode as you can have hours of fun chasing this toy car. Is your pet getting a little fat? This product is perfect for the exercise your pet might need. Turn off the TV and enjoy watching your pet try and catch this hilarious toy car. If you re tired of watching then you can easily join in on the fun and try and catch it yourself. The ultrasonic sensors mounted on the front and back serve a second purpose which includes avoiding running into your walls. No need to worry about damage with this toy car. The included Android app allows for an equally fun manual mode. You can control this car just like any other RC car using the analog pads on the Android phone screen. Turn, go forwards, backwards, all directions are possible using this specially designed mode. Each analog pad controls one of two motors for easy maneuverability. No need to run to the store to buy batteries as a massive 2.4Ah rechargeable lithium ion battery pack is included on the car. When the battery dies, quickly recharge the battery using a standard 9V wall wart and get back to having fun. See the current battery charge on the included Android app so you can know how much fun you have left. Also displayed is a temperature color gradient of both the front and back views of the IR sensors.

5 Product Setup Instructions Battery Charging 1. Turn the car off using the power button 2. Plug the 9V wall wart into the power jack 3. Wait for the battery to fully charge (when the red led under the power button turns off) Installing the Android App 1. Follow Google s instructions for installing the Android SDK 2. Turn on USB debugging under the Settings->Applications->Development->USB debugging 3. Run the included project to install the Application on the Android phone Connecting the Android Phone 4. Open the Infrarat Controller Application from the Applications menu 5. Turn the car on using the power button 6. Turn on the Bluetooth on your Android phone 7. Wait for your car to show up under select car (your car has the name Infrarat-XXXX where XXXX is the last four digits of the MAC address on the Infrarat Bluetooth module 8. If the car that is to be connected does not show, press the refresh button and go to step 7 9. Select the Infrarat car that is to be connected 10. Wait for a notification saying connected

6 Product Use Instructions Follow the product setup instructions before use. Changing Modes To change modes, select the mode desired on the Settings tab in the Android application. A green dot will appear in the radio button circle to show which mode the car is in. The manual controls will only work when the app is set to manual mode. Manual Mode This mode allows for each motor to be controlled via the connected Android Phone. The analog pads on the Android phone can be seen in Figure 3. To go forward, place a finger inside the white circle. The y axis of the black circle is used to calculate the motor speed. All the way up means 100% forward while all the way back means 100% backward. Each analog pad can be controlled independently using two fingers. To turn have one motor go faster than the other. Zero point turns can be achieved by having one motor all the way forward and another all the way backward. Flee Mode This mode makes use of the front and back proximity sensors to stay away from objects. To stop the car on flee mode either change modes to manual or block both the front and back ultrasonic sensors. This will cause the car to stop allowing the user to turn the power button off. Make sure to keep the car away from chairs as the car s ultrasonic sensors might not detect the legs of the chair. Follow Mode This mode can be used to have the car follow a warm body. Using this mode the user can use the car as a companion. Make sure that the room is a normal room temperature for accurate body detection. Also make sure that the body to be followed isn t covered in thick clothing like coats and sweatshirts. Application Navigation The Android app makes use of two screens that can be navigated between using the tabs at the top. The Settings tab can be used to switch between modes and connect to the car. The Car Control tab can be used to view the IR temperature color gradient, battery level, and control the car manually in manual mode.

7 Product Troubleshooting Instructions Problem Solution Android phone won t connect Turn on Bluetooth Press the refresh button (two arrows making a circle) Turn the Bluetooth off and then back on again Power cycle the car Car doesn t seem to be changing modes Make sure the Android phone is connected (the connection status led will be solid) The car won t move in manual mode Make sure the proximity sensors didn t get bent down towards the ground and there is nothing in close proximity of the proximity sensors The battery never charges The battery may be dead and need to be replaced The servo gets stuck looking to the side Power cycle the car Android app keeps crashing Make sure that the environment is free from excessive radio frequency interference Android app crashed and won t connect to Bluetooth after being restarted Turn the Bluetooth off then back on again or power cycle the car IR temperatures seem to update slowly or there is lag in manual mode Try to move to an environment with less radio frequency interference or move closer to the car Android phone shows one mode but the car Connect the Android phone appears to be in another mode Select the mode again Car won t follow in follow mode Make sure that the car is not in a hot environment and the body to track is not covered in thick clothing
